I am posting my Milwaukee Road layout that I have been working on since 2005. It is a 2 foot wide shelf layout around the walls with a peninsula. The layout will cover a 24 foot square when completed. It runs from Tunnel City, Wisconsin in the northwest to Portage Wisconsin in the southeast. The first pictures of the layout are a little fuzzy, they were taken with a regular camera and scanned, after that the pics with be better with a digital camera. It will take me awhile to get what I have done so far posted after that I will continue as I build. I am building this one section, one scene at a time. The track plan is based on the Milwaukee ROW in this area. most of the buildings and scenes are scratchbuilt from old pictures I have found and talking to people. I hope you will enjoy the tour as much as I have building it, I will try to give a little history as I go.

I'm looking forward to following your work. I am considering a shelf layout myself. Thanks for sharing.

I, for one am looking forward to following the complete story of you layout.
From inception to what you have done lately will be quite a story based on what you have been putting out recently.
Jack
Well I guess I'll get started.
I started the layout in the rail yard in Portage Wis. The section is 2' wide and 14' long and took a little over 2 years to build. It is also in another room from the main layout. The majority of the structures are scratchbuilt with a few kits. the first pic's are of the south end of the yard.
Here you see some maintainance buildings, the back of the caboose supply building and a few industries the were on the edge of the yard.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1434.jpg&hash=ec1fa237ece338c40e289ec27d7d45877e73b1f0)
The next is the south end pumping station, the yard had five water towers at one time.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1435.jpg&hash=4ba964abeda8e36915e2345e77d88343f2aadc0b)
8)
Next we move to the other side of the Caboose supply house. Here they cleaned and restocked the caboose for their next run.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1438.jpg&hash=acf96a153f34d85a23c1e81fe45900e8ea8575b1)
Just north of the supply house was the bunk house, It had bunks, lockers and showers, a place to rest on a layover. The building was built using Milw. plans
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1440.jpg&hash=898248bcf1d6c03305fd67f9f6f33f5eea85dfa7)
in the background you can see the Freeland steel tank CO. That went belly up in the 60's and the United Cigar Co. that is no longer around.
8)
Here is an over view of the yard.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1445.jpg&hash=b23eb8f6cf6d1eb786ac74ffbe2caa5ca7d5bdf7)
Now we will move up to the north end of the yard to see the large a-frame hoist and the north water tower.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1448.jpg&hash=066742d38bf5ab7808423582a07a1557c0469244)
and the north pumping station.
8)
Here is a view of the engine house. It was built using Milw. plans

Nice work Andy!
I'll be watching for more posts - remember we love pictures!
Andy,
Ditto to what Greg said and I'll be watching as well.
Tom
Well you asked for it guy's I have eight years of pictures.
As I stated before the layout is in two rooms. The next section I built is 2' by 3' and is the town of Tunnel City and is the location of Milwaukee's first tunnel west. The CNW also had a tunnel here but in the 1970's the tunnel collapsed and was never reopened. They just joined to the Milw. tracks and rented their tunnel. The tunnel hides the wall opening between the two rooms. The only picture I can find of this section is a completed one.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1450.jpg&hash=5f1b55303de4b1c947ff6f353d565ce15c15732b)
A couple of interesting facts, the town of Tunnel City was named before the railroad ever got there, The CNW ran a single track main but had a two track tunnel and the Milw. had a double track main buy only a single track tunnel.

Andy,
Looking very nice. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
I'll keep watching.
Leaving Tunnel City heading East is a section that is only 8 inches wide and about a foot long. I had to get around my electrical box. From pictures I found there was a tractor repair shop in a quanset hut and a small brick building, I never found out what was in there. I made the brick building from some Walters kit scraps and the hut is a kit from Rix.

this was the only crossing in town.

The next section is between the towns of Tunnel City and the repair yard in Tomah. It measures 5' by 2' it will contain a farm and a small hunting cabin. First picture is the benchwork, foamboard and the backdrop with clouds.

Andy,
I have long been a fan of your modeling, and it is wonderful for me to be able to see more of your layout. I like your fidelity to the area you are modeling. I have never seen anyone else model the facilities in a state park. I like the logging scene and the oil dealer, but I like the farm scene best. Thanks for sharing your layout with us.
Thank you Jerry, I have a lot more to post and a lot more to build. I hope you will follow along.

After the train clears the bridge in Camp Douglas the first thing it sees is the Pulaski sisters house.

Thank you for sharing all the photo's Andy, your layout looks great. There's one thing I think it could use though , some untidying , I mean there's no trash or filth or grime anywhere, but tastes differ.
Just looking back I realize it's your roads most of all, the ones with the dirt roads look far more realistic then with the asphalt roads.
Thanks for the comments Jambouli, I will take them into consideration.

On to the next scene in New Lisbon. It will be a vehicle repair and supply yard. I can't find any pictures of the original, just going by hear say, so I am winging it!!
First is the gasoline storage tank.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewhistlepost.com%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCF1378.JPG&hash=71b442e43982318ea9d88f7e243f12abc69331a6)

Chris, I had it left over from an old layout and it was a perfect fit here.
The middle part of the yard done.

Looks great Andy.....thanks for sharing!
Just to let everyone know what happened here, I didn't forget or give up on this post. I belonged to another forum (the whistle post) and all my pictures were on that site then transfered over here. Last August the owner passed away and the forum went down and took all my pictures with them. So to bring this thread back to life I will take all new pictures and fill them all back in, it might take a little while but I hope you all will bare with me. I hope to get all caught up and continue with this thread and hope everyone will continue to watch, I have made a lot more progress since I stopped posting here. I have made a little progress so far, the only pictures I will not be able to replace are the construction ones so if you find a little X in a box you will know what happened. Thanks for watching this as I went along and sorry this post got drawn out so bad.

Andy,
Wonderful job on the Farmer's Co-op! It looks perfect in that spot. Great looking layout.
Tom ;D
Andy...
Great photos. Looking up at stuff in HO is not a regular occurrence. It's a fun perspective.
see ya
Bob
Thanks Tom!
Bob, I like taking the ground level shots the best. Lets you visit their world.
I have a few more pictures to go back and plug in but I couldn't wait to post the newer stuff.

Dang Andy that came out great
rich
It must be those fancy letters Rich, thanks again.
8)
Well done Andy.....it looks great in place. 8)
Andy, it is a wonderful mini-scene!
Andy....wonderful work....felt I was present in the photo.
Great scenes Andy, love the trailer park and the barn , and the Co-Op is fantastic .
Thanks to all for looking and commenting. Might be a little while before the next post I have some ballasting to do. I also broke down and bought a kit, (you guy's are a bad influence on me). I was going to scratch build the next scene but found a kit that matches almost perfectly so I went with it..
8)
Working on a few more road sections and crossings. Also getting some ballasting done. The next scene will be in the bottom right of the picture. It will be a small gas station and diesel truck repair shop. Only one of these buildings is still standing today and it is a roofing outfit now. I know Bob Parrish has a soft spot for gas stations so he might like this. I will be starting to build the scene shortly.

Andy .....
Yes I am a lay down for gas stations. It's warming up enough here in downtown Idaho for me to fire up the 41 pick up. The model A will be the end of March. But... No cool old gas stations to take them to.
I'll be watching.
Thanx
Bob

I am also looking forward to seeing your gas station , you can never have too many gas stations on your layout ;D
Andy,
this corner is looking awesome and I can´t wait to see the rest of this with scenery. Fantastic.....

Andy,
I agree with the others, it's looking fantastic.

Now back across the tracks to the Co-op store.
Andy,
Sometimes, a song comes along, and the words in a song best describes this addition to your Milwaukee Road pike.
The "Traveling Wilburly's " song .... "End of the Line" ... and the words they repeat in singing it " WELL IT'S ALL RIGHT " must be about this model you added to your empire. Very nice build !!! :) And best yet, they sing it in a RR car..... 8)

Tom
I agree with Tom. Looks great.
Jeff
What a great scene.
Andy,
Looking at this scene makes me miss even more all the photos of your layout that were posted on the Whistlepost. Count me in, great scene, especially love the last shot with the Co-op in the background.
Thank you very much guy's, still a lot more to go.
Thanks Tom great song, I always did like that tune.
Thanks Jerry, I still miss the Whistle Post. It took me a long time to decide on another forum, this one is starting to feel like home.
Well the cement block sheet got here from Rusty Stumps, still waiting for the metal building from PikeStuff. I can't start on the build until it gets here, I need the building to set the height of the others. In the mean time I got the site ready on the layout. Cement in and I built a wood fence from Rusty Stumps. I guess I can get the grade crossing in and do a little more ballast until it gets here.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1775.jpg&hash=91663e796b83cb8396041be795c494cce3c2bc9c)
Andy,
Great scene!
Tom B. thanks for posting the song, I hadn't heard it in years.
Tom ;D

I get those a lot! Building a relatively simple kit (usually a car kit) helps get me out of the rut. If that doesn't work, I'll go off and do some other hobbies for a while, then pick up a favorite railroad prototype book. That's usually enough of a break to get the juices flowing again.

Thanks for the tips Dave.

Andy,
Wish we had a neighbor like you that was a model RR'er. I am a loner out here north of the Twin Cities...Seems like all modelers live at least one hour away....for me the summertime means outside work on my property and spray painting of castings and priming of structure walls outside in the front yard to get them ready for the long winters here in MN....usually take a little time away from the hobby at this time of year which is normal for me....did stop at a RR hobby shop today for 2 purchases ... :) ... Send me a PM on my email if you have time. ;)
Tommy
While I am working on the ice house and before I can put it on the layout I have to finish this little scene first. About 2/3 done, still have to build a car and two little people.

Morning all, Looks like rain today so all the outside jobs are ruined. Guess I will have to stay inside and work on the layout, OH DARN!
Hey Tom B , where abouts near Chicago did you live? I was born and raised in a small SW suburb called Lyons. Made the big trek up north in '85
Andy,
We are both from Chicago's South Side, after we were married, our first home was in Central Stickney for 15 years.....Lyons is next to North Stickney, Burbank is South Stickney, and Central Stickney was between I-55 and Midway Airport.......so very close to Lyons.....we moved to McHenry, Ill from 1989-2000......taking the Metra downtown for 11 years.....then off to Texas for 10 years due to a job loss.....then retiring near the kids in Minnesota.....
Nice modeling on that Milwaukee Road too !
Tommy
Thanks Tom, we were neighbors and never knew it. My sister lived in Stickney off of 47th st. close to the cemetary.
Finished up the small storage area scene.

Andy,
I know you've been busy with structures but are there any layout updates?
Tom ;D
Thanks for asking Tom, I am working on getting the Pittsburg house on the layout, then next door is the Solace house.
Andy
The layout is really coming along. When your building structures the layout progress always seems slow until you step back and see how much each one adds to the total scene. I will be following your progress.
Thanks for stopping in John. I do take a bit longer than most seeing that I do one scene at a time then move on to the next one. It is just the way I have always done it and it works for me.
Here is the area that the two houses will fit into. I will work from the backdrop where the Pittsburg house will go, then the Solace house. After those are in I will cross the tracks to the right, build a station then to the left with another house. When that is all complete I have to build another section of benchwork.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1892.jpg&hash=3c1c48c23371c58b134da414f4f554c887edffd0)

No I don't Bob, I found the site with all the plans and needed some houses for the layout. Now I am just waiting for Sears to try and collect for the use of their plans.

Well before I can get the Solace house into the vacant lot I have a few things to do. Solder in the drops for the track, solder the turnout in, weather the track, connect the switch lever and build the grade crossing.

I'm working on it !!
Drops are in, track soldered and rail weathered, switch throw is hooked up. working on the grade crossing and two power poles for the scene, need to build two transformers for the houses power.
So, Andy, are you waiting for a "planting party" to get it planted.

Well I am making progress, put in the two power poles, and the styrene for the crossing. I am an old cheapy so I made the center culvert out of an old ball point pen tube. I will paint it when I am done with a little plaster work. Next I will weather the ties, put in the sidewalk crossing, some plaster and the wood crossing ties between the rails.

Put the plaster down and painted, crossing is painted in the lighter gray for concrete, sidewalk crossing is in and painted, sidewalk to house is painted. Pictures tomorrow after I hit the gray paint with a little A/I wash.
Andy,
Great work on those 2 scratch built Sears homes. They look perfect in place on your layout !
Tom
Andy,

Thanks for the comments,
Finished the landscaping around the Solace house, added two street lights and a lady out for a stroll. Also started on the wood part of the crossing. I use 1/16 by3/32 basswood strips, cut to about two feet aside longer than the pavement. Five of these strips fit perfect between the rail with enough room for the wheel flanges. When They are all in I will use Apple Barrel acrylic oak stain on them then an A/I wash. Then fill in the ballast and this scene is done.

I added a top ledge to the retaining wall and put down a 3/16 thick piece or Gator board to raise the station and the house up to track level. Next is a set of steps up out of the parking lot and some plaster work, then I can get it painted.

Andy, you have been busy since the last time I saw pictures of your layout from a previous forum we both belonged to. Glad I found your work again and keep up the great work.
Hey Gary,
Glad to have you back. I sort of settled in here a little awhile ago myself. Everyone here is very helpful and some REALLY great modeling going on. So far they have put up my attempts at building a layout.
Filled the back and right side with plaster and built two sets of stairs. When the plaster is good and dry I will paint it all with a base coat. Dark brown where the house sits and the rest concrete.

Andy,
You've been busy as well and the houses look great. I remember my Grandmother in Vandalia, Illinois had a yard wall like the one you are building. I sat and walked on it many many times.
Tom ;D
Thanks Tom, The house that will be going there is and old Victorian with a tower. It's the Laser Art Tower house. I needed to raise the station to track level so I figured I might as well do the house too. The wall was an afterthought. I think I will be putting an iron fence on top of it.
Painted on the final concrete color and an A/I wash.

My mother and Aunt Ruby grew up in this Victorian in Vandalia, Il. I stayed there as a small boy one summer and always was afraid to go to sleep. It just plain scared me. It's now owned my some church group for unwed mothers.

Thanks Tom, I used one of your tips by using the leftover tree parts for groundcover.
While I am waiting for the rest of the shingles to come in to finish the roof I have been working on the site. Added a few vehicles, power pole with transformers and a little guy that's running late. Working on one more car for the lot and then put down the gravel. I also have 9 more little people to paint.

I have the house on the layout and a little greenery. now to finish the front fence and all the smaller details for the scene.

Great looking scene :)
Hi Andy,
The layout is looking good. I like the way the station turned out.
Nice scene.
Thanks guy's still putting the small details in.
Great scene , love the patched looking lawn.
Great scene. I agree with Jan...those little spots in the lawn really bring it home (especially to my home :P ).
Nice work!
John
Andy,
Wonderful scene and very well done.
Tom ;D
Very nice job, Andy.
Jeff
Thanks everyone for the comments. I had the lawn all green but it looked to fake, I thought this looked a little more natural.
Andy
It looks great. The little people need to have to deal with grubs just like the 1:1 world.
Finished up the Tower house scene.

Now that the Tower house scene is done our next stop on this journey is to build the next 3 foot section of the layout. It will contain a small bluff with a road and bridge on top. I will use the bluff as a scene block. It will have the double track main line with two spurs, one for a saw mill scene and the other for a pulp wood loading scene. It will all take place in a little town called Lyndon Station Wisconsin.
Great looking scene Andy , lots of details . The Tower house looks great and I like the fresh paint look , after all a house of this kind would have been well maintained , but I do think the roof needs a bit of weathering , every roof has some dirt , leaves and such on it.
House looks great there. Nice work.
Jeff
Very nice work.
Very nice scene Andy. :) 8)

Thanks all, Jan after looking back at the pictures I will see what I can do on the roof.
I cut all the pieces for the next 2' by 3' foot section of layout.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1965.jpg&hash=8672085be6c0bf7920c1fc5ed26eb08dcb3e3d19)
also hung the rest of the soffit frame, I ran out of ceiling tiles, one more piece and I can get the Masonite on.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1966.jpg&hash=49bf756a62c3c34314cb6b811f765ecc53b707d7)
now to drill all the holes in the benchwork parts.
The next three foot section of bench work is done, I still have to attach the legs to the floor.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1967.jpg&hash=885bf97060b0c1c486358185413d1ec97edaa48d)
I put a 1 by 6 on the end because that is where my walk in will be with a lift out bridge.
Well I got the pink glued on ,now gluing on the cork. The double track main will converge into one at the end of this section so it can cross the Wisconsin river over the lift out bridge.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1968.jpg&hash=fb1cdab8300b2f8316d00dcaded08812a65a48da)
You're getting there Andy. Nice work. :) 8)

Hi Andy:
Nice looking layout. I've been watching your progress. The new section looks like it coming quite nicely.
Karl
Thanks Karl. I have all the cork glued down and sanded, at the moment I am gluing track down. The two sidings will go down to the foam board.
Mainline all glued down and the ramps for the sidings. Next to paint the base color before putting the sidings down.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1969.jpg&hash=19ef95d87662530901d60a5112b30eb61c719432)
Looking good.
Thanks Curt,
The base color has been painted on and all the track has been laid. Now to get the backdrop on and the wiring.

That will be a nice addition to your layout.
I have the backdrop frame built and attached, not really exciting enough for pictures.
I have been held up on the backdrop board because of the weather, I have to cut it outside. Working on the wiring.
Andy:
what are you using for your outside layout border. Looks like pine tongue & groove. I really like the way that looks.
Karl

Right you are Karl, knotty pine tongue and groove. I did most of the walls in the basement with this stuff, I really like it, I just am using up all the cutoff pieces. It comes in 8ft lengths, 5/16 thick and about 3 1/2 inches wide. I figured the layout will blend in with the walls.
Amongst all the female voices in the house saying "your sick and should be resting" I have the backdrop board mounted and sanded, ready for paint. The only one that didn't give me grief was the dog.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1971.jpg&hash=89d60a51eebb8685f77e5614c89eab0f97d413c1)
Dog is after all , man's best friend. ;) Get well soon.
Andy,
There is a time for everything, as much as I love seeing your layout progress, hope you take some time to rest and get better. All those voices cannot be wrong.
Backdrop primed and painted. And as soon as you get a nice blue sky, the clouds roll in. Next step is the background hills.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fmilwaukee%2520road%2FDSCF1972.jpg&hash=d6e196edab9f3047468b203a886c00269f7f3514)
If my wife or daughters ask who did this I am telling them one of you guy's did, I wasn't supposed to.
It looks very good.
Andy, All the women are concerned about your health. That their job. Hopefully my sister will be here next month to help me paint my backdrop.
I did manage to finish up the backdrop.

Andy,
The backdrop looks great.
Tom ;D
I like the hills. I may have to think about doing something similar on my backdrop. :)
Jeff
Thanks guy's, the most part of it will be covered up by some bluffs. hopefully
Andy,
Nice start to the next section of your layout. Backdrop looks great. Looks like the MOW crew will be kept busy this month.
Tommy
Nicely done.

Bet him and his band are busy playing as is summer time.

Sad to say the layout story has ended Andy pass on a few weeks ago from cancer. He will be missed by may that is for sure.
I'm happy to have known him as a friend even if it was only on the net for the last 14 years.
Rest in peace Andy

Very sad news. RIP.
Oh my, how sad. Andy was such a great guy. Prayers out to his family.
RIP my friend
Hi:
Sorry to hear about Andy. We will all miss him.
Karl
My condolences to his family and friends. It's sad news, but I'm glad he was having fun with the layout as recently as April.
It appears our friend Andy worked and did as much on the layout he could until the end. :'(
This was a neat thread and well built layout.
I have missed Andy as well.
Tom
