Title: Workman's and Son by CCK
Post by: Raymo on November 19, 2014, 06:26:46 PM
Back during the summer Jeff Grove contacted me asking if I had any photos of buildings that would give some ideas for new kits. The first pictures I sent were of this building a couple towns over in Georgetown Mass. It's used by a local contractor as a woodshop and at the time it was receiving a large addition off the back. I told Jeff that I thought the original building would be a great build because it wouldn't need to be put near a siding,it could be anywhere. In less than 24 hours he already had test cuts of the building and sent them out to be built. This build was started back in July and I've been trying to put my 60 minutes a night  in on it as much as possible.(https://modelersforum.com/1-old%20card%20005.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-old%20card%20005.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-old%20card%20007.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-old%20card%20007.JPG)

Here's what I received from Jeff, the 5 walls, tichy windows and doors, laser cut shingles and the stair stringers.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20004-001.JPG)

Jeff has the kit available now with everything packaged to build the complete kit. Before I start,I had to go to the local McDonalds to find some of Gnat's relatives to remind us why we like this forum(https://modelersforum.com/1-1-Worthless%20Without%20Pics-001.jpg)

I also swung by Northeastern Scale to pick up some lumber to help with the build(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20005.JPG)

A couple of problems popped up as soon as I started on the kit. The 1st was the attic windows don't match up. I think the problem is with the rear window not being where it needs to be as seen in the photo. It's to close to one side of the point. No one is going to see the difference from front to back so it wasn't a big deal. The other problem was one wall was about 1/16th to long. Marked it,cut it ,then sanded it,problem fixed :) (https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20007.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20007.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20008.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20008.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20001.JPG)

I tend to over brace but I've had a couple kits twist up with the waterbase paints. I also had to leave room for the end wall of the larger building as seen in the lower photo.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20010.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20010.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20010-001.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20010-001.JPG)

The back of the wood was painted flat black and a couple days later I A&Ied the face.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20012.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20011.JPG)

I wanted to paint this kit in similar colors to the original building so I used Folk Art Butter Pecan for the walls, PollyScale Aged White for windows and trim, and GTW Morency Orange for the doors.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20013.JPG)

Time for the windows. Jeff must be enjoying his retirement drinking the local brew because he sent me the windows on the right instead of the windows on the left that I stole from a FOS kit for the attic windows. All the windows were painted the Aged White(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20015.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20016.JPG)

Back to walls,I lifted some of the wood, added nailholes and drybrushed some Reefer White to bring out the details. I also painted the doors orange and gave them a bit of drybrushing with the white.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20017.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20019.JPG)

At this point a second coat of A&I was applied to the walls and a coat was applied to the windows and doors.(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20020.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20021.JPG)

My new favorite item on the workbench is Frosted Gallery Glass. I used it on all the windows and after it dried,I painted in window shades with TruColor NP light green. These were attached to the walls.(https://modelersforum.com/1-mOfO%20001.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-mOfO%20001.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20022.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20022.JPG)

Cool.   8)  Thanks for sharing Raymo.   :)  I really like the colors and the finish you got on the walls, doors and windows.  This is going to look really sharp when you're finished with it.

A little more progress to show today. I added the brickwork to the 1/8 stripwood foundation and then sanded it down flush(https://modelersforum.com/1-jd%20workmans%20011.JPG)

I went through my box of spare castings and came up with a couple different chimneys and 2 vents for the workshop. I cleaned up the chimney castings and painted them along with the foundation with some brick colored primer. After they dried,I added some thinned light gray for mortar and an A&I wash. I also painted the stack silver and the top of the small chimney with some aged concrete(https://modelersforum.com/1-workmans%20006.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-jd%20workmans%20021.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-jd%20workmans%20017.JPG)

I trimmed the stripwood flush with the cornerposts and I added the stripwood to sidewalls to separate the office from the wood shop. With this being a test build, I had to do some "fancy figuring" to make the roofs. I think I've got them pretty close to what the kit has.(https://modelersforum.com/1-jd%20wkmns%20013.JPG) (http://modelersforum.com/1-jd%20wkmns%20013.JPG) I also painted the bottom sides and gave them the A&I wash. I glued the workshop roof on but I'll shingle the office roof off the building and add it later.

Dan,
This is coming along really well.  The prototype structure is really interesting and Jeff's kit looks to have captured the size and scale accurately.  I really like how you are following the color scheme of the prototype.  I'll be watching as you continue the build.

Well, back to it. I was able to get the roofs shingled up this weekend. I had thoughts of using some 3 tab shingles I had on hand, but decided to use the staged shakes that Jeff supplied. I painted them with a light coat of an earth colored paint. I knocked out the office roof with out  taking any photos but I'll show progress with the main roof.(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20001.JPG)

I picked up this bottle of Americana Sea Glass at one of the big craft stores because it has that greenish-blue color that copper flashing some time turns as it ages. I trimmed the bottoms off a couple of envelopes and painted the pieces with this color and used them for valleys and peaks of the roofs.(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20003.JPG)

When the shingles were all attached,I dry brushed light grey and grimy black on the shingles and applied the painted piece of the envelope to the peak(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20005.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20006.JPG)

After that dried,I attached the other chimney to the backside of the roof. I also lifted some shingles and gave the whole thing an A&I wash. When that set up I drybrushed some of the Sea Glass over the flashing.(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20007.JPG)(https://modelersforum.com/1-work%20008.JPG)
