Title: BIS Boathouse interior
Post by: jbelwood on November 24, 2014, 09:36:18 AM

Inquires on another forum asked about the interior of my BIS boathouse. After sitting on my layout for almost 20 years I realized
that I never pictured the interior. So here's the exterior of the boat house with the eastern rigged dragger Haley on the cradle.
She is scratch built on top of a Sierra West hull. Second pic shows Florence afloat at Mystic Seaport. This was my inspiration for
Haley.

The boat house was built as an open structure so that a marine railway could be fully exposed. The walls are sheathed with scale
2x6 strip wood and framed with 2x4's on 2' centers. The rear roof is removeable for access to the 12v lamps. The entire structure
can be removed from its ground level base. I did not go to extreme detail inside as the interior is somewhat hidden with the boat
on the ways.

Very Nice!!

I have that kit and started to build it many moons ago. Something like back in the eighties. Long before having developed any skills or techniques.

My walls are painted a dark green that would never fly by my standards today. Since nothing got assembled yet I'll just recut the walls and start over.

Your interior job is really inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

Here is the opposite end of my BIS wharf scene. Not a very clear photo.
The tide was really low that day.

Here is my inspiration for the alteration to the BIS boathouse. These photos taken
more than 20 years ago in Camden, ME.  Note the row boat and framing. Couldn't
resist capturing that.

I have posted a link for Elizabeth Marine Ways. This facility still is working from the 1800. I built a model of it years ago. There are interior shot of the main building that I took in the early 1990's. I have posted pictures of the facility.  Look thru the site it is interesting .

Your Builders In Scale - Tidewater Wharf pics are no less than outstanding - magnificent! At first, I thought these were the actual pictures of the "actual building".
I love the coloring of the piles and the weathered water line. It is truly perfect in every way. The inside stud walls are second to none.... You'd  would swear that these are real. I have done my fair amount of interior stud walls (see my River Plate Station forum or my You Tube - same name) You have inspired me to finish mine out the same way. I had asked for interior pics from Builders In Scale (now owned by Crow - yes?) and they had nothing to offer! Yours is great... Where can I see the sail shop and diner pics? I am sure they are eqaully superb.

I am in the process of building this myself, as part of a corner module for the Hub Division (www.hubdiv.org) I also have the 34' Full Hull Lobster Boat kit from Sea Port Model Works. I am planning to add the lobster boat "inside" the building. I have all the exterior walls painted, weathered and trimmed out. I'm on the lookout for hinges for the doors. (and suggestions?)
The lobster boat has been painted green with a black bottom. i am also adding the Campbell water kits (392,396,307,397), Fine Scale Miniature's "Pile Driver", Cahoon's Fish Pier, and a number of boats and nautical items.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - Again - I couldn't have asked for a better thread than this!

Hi Andy,

Can't believe this thread got so much attention. Anyway, here are two pics that have been posted before
on other forums. The first one is a personal favorite and shows my entire BIS wharf scene. I did not build
the freight house (went to a client) or the lighthouse (gifted to Louis Gomes, he did a fantastic build with
it). Don't have any close ups of the diner or sail loft buildings.

I live in Stratford, CT about 3-1/2 hours from you. Should you ever be traveling down this way, give me a call.
I love having visitors.

John,
Thanks for sharing the full scene of the BIS Tidewater Wharf that you built. I like those arm chairs in front of the Sail shop and the curtains on the diner are a very nice detail. Is that real fabric? The details on the ferry are super. One would swear you are working on something larger than HO to get such fine details. I like how you stenciled "ISLANDER" to the ferry. Did you use a wet or dry decal series for that?
Title: Re: BIS Boathouse interior
Post by: jbelwood on December 09, 2014, 11:55:52 AM

Andy...The curtains are paper cutouts that came on a sheet of various designs.
Made by SignsGalore  in FL. Not sure if they are still in business. The Islander
name on the hull done with Woodland Scenics dry transfers.

Thanks for watching,

John

John,

Love your layout. I had the pleasure of seeing it about two years ago prior to the Amherst Train Show in late January. John Grosner arranged a day of layout tours for me and a friend of mine prior to the show. We had the pleasure of seeing your layout, Rick Abramson's, Bob Collett's and John Grosner's layout all on the same day. All I can say is that they all were marvelous. It was a real pleasure meeting everyone and seeing each layout. I have attached a couple of photos that I took of your layout. You guys set a very high bar in modeling. It must be the winter weather ;D ;D ;D . Keep posting photos of your wonderful layout. Merry Christmas to you.

Hi again Frank, glad you enjoyed that layout tour a few years back. Getting the O&PS ready for
an op session this Friday night with the guys mentioned and a few more.

Since you asked for photos, I'm sure you remember this scene.

Merry Christmas to you and yours also.

John

Hey Andy Reynolds,

Did you ever finish your BIS boathouse? You spoke of fitting it out with a full
hull lobster boat. Did this project ever come to fruition? Would love to see
some photos.

John
