Hi All:
Starting Shady Grove Gas Station by Bar Mills Scale Models. This was a real gas station and still exists today.
Here's a photo of the kit.
Karl
Can't have too many gas stations, following along Karl
Hi Jan:
Yes we do. Here's a photo of the real thing.
Karl
Awesome...love any Bar Mills stuff!
But I'd follow a Karl thread if he was putting together a jigsaw puzzle ;D
John
Karl,
Will this build be the HO or O scale kit?
I will be following along with you on this one

Hi Cuse:
Now there's an idea. I never thought or A jigsaw puzzle. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Mike:
This will be the HO kit.
Karl
Hi All:
Windows, doors, walls, corner trim and foundation parts are painted. On to assembly and weathering.
Here's a photo.

Ditto!
Karl,
On the Shady Grove JIG SAW can you share with us the base color and what did you use for the white
Thanks,

Hi Mike:
Base color on walls is Floquil Canadian National gray. The white is Polyscale reefer white.
Karl
Hi All:
The foundation is painted Floquil Aged concrete and assembled. This is a delicate assembly and takes a little time to get it all square. The gluing surfaces are pretty small. So I let it set then I added drops of glue on the insides of the corners. This strengthened it up pretty well. Here's a photo.
Karl
Karl,
Looks like you are off to the races with yet another cool structure. Looks good so far, of course, I'll be following along.
Hi Jerry:
Thanks appreciate your comment.
Karl
That is a neat looking gas station Karl.....I'll be watching. 8)
Hi Greg:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
karl,
Well, it seems I'm following yet another one of your builds.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Ordered this one thanks to Karl's thread. Arrived yesterday. Unfortunately it has to go under the tree and I don't get it 'til Ho-Ho Day. Damn you, Santa!
Hi Dave:
Glad you got one. It's small but is a challenge.
Karl
Hi All:
OK here's where I am on this kit. Little different this time. No A&I or dry-brushing. Want it to look new like the prototype museum gas station. Walls, windows & doors, signs, foundation and roof are assembled. I chose to ad signs to the top of the front wall as they are on the prototype. They are not in the kit. I put a gravel roof on instead of rolled roofing. Here's the photos.
Karl
Looks good! So...for those of us planning on building this: what are some of the tricky parts? What do we need to be careful of?
Hi Dave:
This part is pretty straight forward. The rest I will have to be careful with.
Karl
Staying tuned...
Looking good Karl. I also like the new look. I think we tend to weather everything and forget the 1:1 world has many new unweathered structures.
Tom ;D
Karl,
I agree with Tom, and IMO, it is more difficult to model a freshly painted structure since you cannot use weathering to hid any small blemishes.
Hi Dave K, ACL & Jerry:
Thanks appreciate the comments. The foundation is a little tricky as the parts are small and don't have much of a gluing surface. Once it dried I put dabs of glue on the insides of corners to strengthen it. Once the building is glued to it it is strong.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's the next step. The columns must be assembled for the canopy. Care must be take that they are assembled as mirror images so all the sign board tabs fit in the proper spots.
Here's a photo.
Karl
Hi All:
As can be seen I assembled them in halves. I assembled them dry and then ran a bead of glue down the corner seam. After completely dry I will assemble the dry and do the same.
Karl
Hi All:
Columns are assembled as mirror images and parts are painted and ready for assembly. Here's a photo.
Karl
Hi
all:
It is finished. Here's the final photos. Hope you like it. this is not an easy kit.
Easy is not a requirement of a beautiful finished kit !!
Challenges are the name of the game in this hobby - how you get past them may vary !!
Well done Karl, it appears the work was worth the effort. Beautiful structure.
Tom ;D
Great job Karl. Well done.
How about Executioners Rocks next?
John
Great looking little structure, Karl.
Jeff
Hi David, Tom, John & Jeff:
Thanks for the compliments. I added trim to the top of the building & sign boards. It's A 2 X 8. These do not come with the kit but are on the real building. here's a photo.
Karl
First rate job, Karl.
Great job Karl.....the wall caps give it a more finished look and was the most common way to top off a frame wall. 8)
Hi Dave K. & Greg:
Thanks appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed it..
Karl
Great job on the gas station. Are the gas pumps pre-lettered castings?
Hi John:
Thanks. No you add paper signs to the pumps.
