I just looked at my shelf - the dark yellow boxes are not as rare as you might think.  ;) But, just in case someone needs one bad enough to pay that kind of money I would be willing to sell the dark yellow boxes in my rare collection.

At least you get the kit inside the box and not just an empty box.   But for $1200 you'd think he'd throw in free shipping.
I'm not paying $20 to ship that.  :o

WOW , they must be extremely rare, with the 5 FSM kits I have only 1 is in a Dark Yellow box.  ;)

Besides that , what does the box matter if you're going to build the kit.

I'm sorry, but this is just another fine example of yet another Ebay Crazy! Its a damn yellow box for crying out loud. Nothing rare about it. What's not to say the bright yellow box is the rare one!

I just checked my yellow boxes. I have a few bright yellow boxes, several regular yellow boxes and two dark yellow boxes.

C'mon man!

Tom ;D

I believe the deal is there were only 2 Swakhammers in the dark yellow. The one in the auction above and one other one that apparently is missing.

Here is the catch, only a true collector of FSM kits would find this interesting. Those of us buying the kits on eBay to build are not all that concerned about the box's shade unless it somehow magically adds extra castings or Floquil Driftwood to boot.

But hey, if it sells the dude will make a killing on it.

Now hang tight while I go figure out how to age and weather my FSM kit boxes so they are of hue no one out there has.

America, what a country!

And, don't forget the first 2 kits were issued in both white and yellow boxes.

Furthermore, some boxes are signed.

Lastly, some kits have letters of authenticity (or something like that) proclaiming the kit is the first kit in the whole run for that year.

I'm sure there are other quirks that can make a kit rare.

But the rarest of the FSM kits is the one that gets finished  :o

How would anyone in there right mind even think of buying a yellow box for that kind of money.

My abacus tells me that, if I am patient, using the Zapata Rule of Valuation, I should be able to buy 75 FSM's for $1200.00 at $16.00 each. But then, there's that dreaded shipping cost that will eat up part of one of the kits.
So, when done, I have more than a dozen structures for my railroad. I wonder how many buildings I could scratch build for $1200.00?
Or, why not scratch build 70+ buildings and donate the difference to a worthy charity as it IS the season for giving.

The dark yellow boxes are the ones that the Ledbetters peed on while workin' in George's
shippin' department!!
Bet George is laughin' his fanny off about 'Shades of Yellow' - "Hey, the darn things sold"!!  ;D ;D ;D

So, I just got of the phone with George and I asked about the dark yellow boxes. We had a good laugh over the eBay crazies.  The true story on the yellow boxes is that his supplier ran out of the yellow card stock and George had to keep production going so he had boxes made with the darker yellow for some time. This has happened a number of times over the years.  He doesn't remember how long but it was over a few kits runs and a few different kits.  He never threw out boxes as described in the ebay add and he buys his boxes in large quantities so there were many Swankhammer kits made with the dark yellow stock.  I have a Sewall's and a  Railcar Shed made from the dark yellow card stock.  George also told me there are some Orange boxes out there when he really ran into supply problems.  I have never seen one of those but I will pay $16 for one just to have it.  As long as the kit is inside. ;D George asked me to let everyone know that the real value is to build the kit!

People who fall for this kind of deal are known as "mug punters" over here.

More on the dark yellow box.

QuoteQ: I have some other first order kits from George, that also have the dark colored boxes. Now I'm wondering how much they may be worth. I am also wondering how many different kits had the same thing happen, and if he threw them out as well. Guess I'll have to ask George. Thanks for the info
A: Hi, I've been buying, collecting, selling Fine Scale Miniature Kits since I was in High School back in the Late "70's". Wow, didn't realize that it's been 35+ years now. The first 3 kits were both in a Yellow box as well as in a White box. Other than that, the only other unusual box color was "Sewall's Foundry". To the best of my knowledge, every Sewall's was in a Dark Yellow Box. On another note, George had sent me the First 2 Swakhammer's at the request of a Private Individual that I was a contract builder for, at the time. When I completed Swakhammer's, he received one of the Dark Yellow Boxes (Gold Color) and gave me this one, so we both had one. Hope that this information helps everyone understand more of the oddity of Swakhammer's as well as other kits.

George can put his kits in whatever stinkin' color boxes he wants - it's the quality and attention to detail in
the boxes that counts!!!

OK, enough of how the cow ate the cabbage!!!!
