Hi All::
Started this one yesterday. Here's A progress shot of the first wall build.
Karl
Wow, the framing looks great.
Hey Curt:
Thanks much appreciated. Siding is next.
Karl
Nice framing Karl.
This should keep you out of trouble for a few days!!
You know three guys who built this kid won Best of Show!! I'm sure your up to the task at hand.
Jerry
These kind of kits intrigue me, looking forward to the build.
-Steven
I will follow.
this kit is in my stash too.
Eric
First the Mine, now the Mill.....two of the favorite kits in my stash.....I'll be cheering you along Karl. :)
Are you going to do just the buildings or the whole diorama Karl? this one will try your patience and will not be one of those done in several weeks. Have fun and you will do a magnificent job.
I'll be following along on this build. Looking good so far.
Hey Jerry, Steven, Eric, Gregory, Steve D and Mark:
Hey Guys thanks for following along. I'm doing just the buildings as it has to be installed on my friend layout and we don't know where at this point. So the buildings have to be built and fit into the layout at A later date.
Karl
Hey Guys:
got my first wall done. Here's A photo. Hope it looks ok.
Karl
Looks great Karl.
Beautiful Job Karl....Dennis
Hey Curt & Dennis:
Thanks for the great compliments guys. Today I finished up the Mill Main Floor. Next I have to add the carriage drive layout to the floor. here's A pic of the floor.
Karl
Hello Karl, the main floor looks great. That's a lot of individual boards and I like the coloring. Jeff
Great progress on the build..... 8)
Karl.....here are two links to builds of this kit over on Railroad Line Forum I keep forgetting, might be of a good reference.....both are about 50/60 pages and loaded with photos.

Karl,

Bill Michaels is another modeler who completed this one...
Glad your retired !
Tommy
Hey Tommy:
Yeah I'm glad I'm retired to. Legs have been added to the floor. Next is bracing Carriage Drive layout has also been added to the top of the floor.
Karl
I believe Carl Laskey did a great job on this kit. As I am sure you will.
Hey Engine 909:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
As I said above all 43 legs have been added as has all the bracing.
Karl
Nice job on the platform.
Subbed! Was thinking of picking this kit up myself.
Great job so far.
Hello Karl, 43 legs and I don't know how many boards on the deck surface. Great job and I admire your patience. The deck looks wonderful. Can't wait to see how this develops. Jeff
Hey Curt, Rusty & Jeff:
Thanks for all the great compliments. much appreciated as always. I'm working on the sub floor now.
Karl
Hey guys:
Finished the sub floor just now and next is the sorting platform. Here's A photo.
Karl
Hi All:
The sorting table is finished. It's even better than the sub floor. It has 60 legs. Here's a few pics.
Karl
Karl,
Beautiful modeling! The slight color variations in the individual boards really makes both the sub floor and the deck really outstanding.
I recently ordered O'Neills Fabrication and the Brass Foundry - my first SierraWest kits. Can't wait to start them now.
Karl, are you using Hunterline stains by chance? The boards do look great. You're making good progress!
I'll second Jerry's comments, beautiful modeling.
Hey Jerry:
Thanks. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hey Rusty & Curt:
Thanks for the great compliments as always. Finished the Left & right walls today. they are A&I Stain and Dry-Brushed with reefer white as peeling paint. Here's A pic.
Hey Rusty:
I am using Black India Ink and Dry-brushed with Floquil Reefer White.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Here is what I have done so far. Hope it looks OK.
karl
Very nice job Karl. I love the roughness for the siding.....Dennis
Great looking build.
This build is coming along very nice Karl.
Hello Karl, I'm liking your build, although it seems more like a scratchbuilt board by board build than a kit. Great job on the weathering and aging. Jeff
The build is coming along nicely Karl!
-Steven
Hey Dennis, Curt, Steve, Jeff and Steven:
Thanks for all the great compliments. Much appreciated as always. Jeff yes the whole kit is board by board. Very time consuming. Dennis glad you like how the siding looks.
Thanks Again Guys:
Karl
Hey guys:
Finished up the Boiler House Walls and am working on the floor. Here's A photo.
Karl

Karl
Hi All:
Working on the Rough Drying shed. Here's A photo.
Karl
Karl
Somehow I missed this thread - I'm late to the party but I will be following along. Looks great so far.
Looking great, Karl. Do you know if most of SierraWest kits are this intense? It seems more sticks and glue than laser cut parts. Not that I'm complaining of course - especially as I'm soon due to receive the Brass Foundry and O'Neills!
Looks great Karl, I've always been leary of trying a build where you build the framing then build the walls board by board.
Looking great, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Hi All:
Here's A few progress shots. This is the Old Mill Dock & Flat car table. On to the flat car ramp and the deck.

Jerry
Hey Jerry:

Karl
Hi All:
Started the boat house today. I used A&I on the walls then dry-brushed it with Craft Smart paint. It doesn't have A color name on the bottle. Here's A photo hope it looks OK.

Karl
Very nice Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
All these individual elements make me really look forward to seeing the whole thing together. How far along do you think you are with the kit?
Hello Karl, I'm with Rusty, there sure are a lot of sub-assemblies to this kit and it will be great to see them all come together. Jeff
Hey Rusty & Jeff:
I'd say I'm close to halfway through it. I will not be putting it on A diorama as we don't know where it is going on the layout. So my friend asked me to build it W/O the diorama.
Thanks for following along.
Karl
Hi All:
got A fair amount of work done today on the Boathouse. I wanted A more weathered roof so I added A paper Creek tar paper roof. Structure is glued to it base. I also added gable trim not included in the kit. Hope it looks OK. On to the dock details.
Karl
Great color and weathering , looking good Karl
Karl
Really looking nice - I hope you will follow-up with pictures of all the structures installed on the layout.

Karl

Tommy

Karl,
Looks fantastically nasty, great job on the weathering.
Tom ;D
Hey Karl, I'm with everyone else, a great looking build. I loved the boat house- good colors, weathering and just the right level of aging. Jeff

Looks great, Karl.
I really like the weathered blue.
Are you planning on adding rafter tails?
Cheers, Mark.
Karl,
Love it. Rafter details will really set it apart.
Tom ;D
Hey Bob D:
I will assume you are most likely talking about the boats. That is the way the A&I stain dried.
Karl
Hey Mark & Tom:
Hadn't thought about rafter tails. Maybe I will do that. anyway thanks for the great compliments.

Karl

I know this is going to great when your'e done. Just for kicks have you ever built the SSLtd Jennings Lumber yard. I've had mine in my "next" area for over 6 years now...kind of intimidated to make the first cut of wood. Keep the pictures coming. I had the Twin Mills kit; but not the space to put it in.

Karl,
Great looking Boathouse. I have some of the Paper Creek tar paper roof sheets; did you do anything to them before or after gluing them on? A&I, chalks, mate finish? I'm kind of hesitant on using them; they look to glossy
Hey Jerry:
Thanks for the compliment much appreciated.
Karl
Hey John B:
Is your post in the right spot. It's from over A year ago. Let me know OK.
Karl
I did a search for Paper Creek products and your post came up. I sent you a private message about the same thing. I thought this thread would catch your eye. Sure would like some hints on how you made the Paper Creek roof look so nice
Bents look great , will you drill holes for the NBW's?
Hey Lynn:
Thanks buddy much appreciated. The side bracing has been added. Here's A pic.
Karl
Hey Lynnb:
There are no NBW's in the instructions. But it's A good Idea and I will install them. I do not drill holes I just glue em on.
Karl
They look good and solid. I find I have much better luck drilling just the right sized hole , dab of glue and the nbw with just a short stem slips right in.
Hey Lynn:
thanks much appreciated. 3 more sections to go on the log slide.
Karl
Wow, that's a lot of work. Nice job, Karl. Looks great.
Very nice Karl.

Karl

It's my vague recollection that there was a lot of grease and then greasy sawdust around the gears when I visited a sawmill. This is coming along great, it's probably time to think about how much skungy weathering to add :-)

Karl...you always do great work but this one is, piece by piece, bit by bit, really showcasing your abilities. Im enjoying this very much.

Well Karl I think you've finally met your match!!
And your doing one hell of a job! This is just a great way of showing your ability to do the hardest of kits.
Yes the gears will need some grease but you can always do that later in the build.
