Just in case anyone wanted to know the status of the RR Line Forum.
My friend Rick and admin over there sent me an email.
He has ordered new servers and other stuff.
Going to take at least a few more weeks.
Jerry
I don't generally use the RR-Line forums (I find it clunky to navigate), but I do feel for them if they suffered a viral attack.
Porting a forum is difficult even when you're prepared...
Actually Craig he's been wanting to change over for a long time.
But what also worried him was about losing posts when he does the conversion.
Hopefully it will be a lot easier for us to post pictures there.
Jerry
Thanks for the update, Jerry. I'm rooting for Joe accomplishing the complete transfer. There's a lot of content from people I knew, but will never see again.
Thanks for the update, Jerry! ~mike c
Appreciate you sharing the update
Jerry
We are wishing them the best. There is some great content and hobby history there, that I would hate to see the hobby loose.
Your so right John.
There is so much history of guys who posted there and are no longer with us.
And would be a dam shame to lose all that.
Jerry
In case anyone is interested a update on the RR Line Forum.
Slow going.. ordered some new equipment to host the forum on should be here this week .. then can setup and install the new server software ( server 2019 ) which I already received .. then to install the new forum software .. at that point I will have to wait for the other company to migrate all the old pictures and info to ..
Thanks for the update, Jerry.
Cheers, Mark.
Helluva process. I hope it goes well for them.
Jerry
Thank you for the update. I hope they can get it up and running again.
I too appreciate the update and hope that you will be able to get the forums RailRoad forums back up.
Hope that you will get it back working!
Any update on Railroad-Line.com?
dave
I hope when it comes back up it's easier to post pics than having to use all the HTML crap! :o ??? ::) :( :P :-\
Last I heard from Rick (Admin) there working on the migration!
Hopefully it won't be much longer. :(
If I hear anything more I'll post it here.
And yes I think it will be easier to post pictures. let's hope so!
Jerry
I noticed today that there's a Plesk generated web page. Looks like progress to me.

Rich I think your right there going to be the new web site.
Jerry
Here's the latest on the Forum for those interested.
Got an update from Joe:
the new server is running, the software is installed.. but needs some configuration issues fixed... just have been too busy of late to dedicate time to it..
Hopefully in the next couple weeks...
Thanks for the update. ~mike c
Thank you Jerry. Keep us posted.

Joe just put that up to today! Looks like he's moving in the right direction!
I forgot to say it's a list of links to many craftsman kit manufactures web sites.....real handy, I've had it on my favorites for years. :)

The site is still down. Joe has got the server working. Still some software issues. Said should be back up in a couple of weeks.

The latest!!
RAILROAD LINE FORUMS UPDATE All the Railroad Line Data has been converted. We have a couple nagging errors with some of the threads that we are in process of fixing. Then i will be opening the forum to the mods for bug testing.. Hopefully we will be back in a couple more days.. Joe
I see it's somewhat live as of now...
It's up!
Go to login and select that you forgot your password.

Hey Rich:
thanks for the info.
Karl
Looks like somehow I snuck in and now I just see a 503 error. :-\
--Rich
I reset my password, and clicked on "new postings". That's when I got the "503 error".
dave
Just got back from resetting my password. Was able to leave a message.
Great to have three forums I surf through with a diversity of subjects.

I'm getting a privacy error from Safari when I click on the website. Same error I have been getting for days.

I think that's a certificate error, which you can 'override'. (certificate is for 'railroad-line.com' and you're trying to access 'www.railroad-line.com' - or vice versa.) There should be a place to click on "accept the risk" or something similar, which will then prompt for your password to enter (and validate) the PKI certificate as valid.
dave
This is what I get
403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
The 403 error is an issue for a few of us. I'm confident it's something they are working on.
I discovered that if you navigate to the website in Private Window, it gets around it... for now. Must be to do with certificates AND cookies.
If using Safari go to File > New Private Window
If using Chrome go to File > New Incognito tab
If using Firefox go to the three-line Menu > New Private Window
Thanks Craig. That worked well. ~mike c
No joy for me on Railroad-Line. Even after removing the cookies and trying the private browsing option, either i get an incomplete load (page is not properly formatted) or "403 error".
Definitely some serious configuration problems with their new software. (And getting an OS level error message, the '403 error' doesn't give me a lot of confidence the software is working correctly. :(
dave
Hmmm. I used my bookmark link and got right in. The "Todays Posts" gets me a 403 error, but other then that I can navigate around.
But can you post?
dave
So they fixed the privacy error issue but I can't sign in and they don't recognize my email address to reset my password. I'm going to let it go for a few days and see if they can work through the problems. I also get the 403 error if I try to look at anything so guests can't view posts.
I couldn't see any pictures anywhere until this morning. They are up again.
I believe it's fixed now. I posted comments and pictures before!
Jerry
If you get the "403" error, close the window. Go to your browser preferences, find and delete the railroad-line.com cookies. Then reopen the window. The "recent posts" feature is still broken, but doing this fixed the other problems I've had with RR-Line so far.

Thanks, Dave. Deleting the cookies got me back in.
Looks like search still does not work, tho.
If you happen to click on one of the forums that is not fixed you get 403.
You need to delete cookies to get back in.

Can some one explain to me in computer 101 how to delete cookies in RR-Line forums, my brain isn't working like it use to

That depends on which OS/browser you use.
On the Mac/Safari, go to the menu bar. Under "Safari" select "Preferences" Then select "Privacy" and click on "Manage Website Data". In the search box enter "Railroad-Line". Select (highlight) the Railroad-Line.com entry, then click on "Remove". (Close the Preferences when you're done.)
On the Mac/Firefox (presume it's similar for Windows/Firefox), open a news window. Then go to the Menu Bar, select "Firefox" and then Preferences. On the left, select "Privacy and Security" Scroll down to where you see "Cookies and Stored data" and click on "Manage Data". Search for "Railroad-Line.com". Select/Highlight that, and then click on "Remove Selected". Then click on "Save Changes". (Close the window when you're done.)
I can't help you with a Microsoft browser or Chrome.
dave
Thanks Dave,
Thanks for the replay; but I've got windows. Hopefully; someone can help me out. My mind is a total black right now
John, what browser are you using? Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer (7,8...?).
Google Chrome
Steps for Google Chrome:
1. On your computer, open Chrome.
2. At the top right, click the three vertical dot menu.
3. Click "Settings".
4. In this new window, on the left hand side, choose "Privacy and Security"
5. Click "Cookies and other site data"
6. Find and click "See all cookies and site data"
7. In the box called "Search cookies" type railroad-line.com
8. Click the trash can icon next to each result.
9. Done. Navigate to Railroad-Line and enjoy.
Craig,
Couldn't have done it with out you.
Thanks
John
Glad it worked for you, John. Happy surfing.
Before everyone rushes to do Craig's suggestion - I tried and now things are considerably worse.
Oh dear. What's worse off now?
Well I've been poking around a bit but like many folks I keep getting the...
403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
To the best of my limited knowledge a 403 error is generally a server side issue. So there's really nothing you, nor I, can really do. Fish around some, maybe even post (though that could be fraught). I think we need to wait until Joe gets it fixed.

Rich, thanks for the note !! I have also been fishing around a bit and continue to bump into the same 403 error message.
Quite honestly, this still appears to be a beta version of the site. Terrible look and feel, extremely diffiicult to navigate (not user friendly), if I didn't know better I would have no idea I was on the RRL forum (no badging or otherwise), no search capabilities, and no current or since last visited threads, etc....
I could be wrong and open to being corrected or pointed in the right direction.
Otherwise, I will wait it out and hope that this gets better and hopefully all of the content is preserved and easily accessible.
Your mileage may vary.
--Paul
I can go on as a guest but it doesn't take long before I get a 403 error and have to delete the cookie again. I can't get on using my login - it doesn't remember my user name, or email address. :-[ I have been a member for a lot of years - before Jimmy's first forum. How long has that been? I hope they get the problems solved. No smart *** comments about how that was back when John Allen was posting. ;D ;D ;D
I've seen a lot of people not getting an e-mail when they try to sign on. In the old forum you could enter an e-mail address so another member could privately e-mail you. I saw lots of members and no e-mail added in their profiles. You may have an e-mail address, but did you enter it in the profile on the old forum? If not the software won't know where to send the notification. It's like moving to another house in another state, if you don't leave a forwarding address your not going to get your mail. I say you may need to "sign in" to get going again if you didn't enter an e-mail address in the old forum.
Bernd
If you click on one of the topics not fixed yet it will give you the 403 treatment.
Jerry
You mean there are other forums ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jaime
Yup there are other forums. Each has it's own unique subjects if you are interested the diversity of model railroading. I have six forums I visit everyday, each one with different subjects of interest.

I haven't had any luck signing on or getting emails. I even tried signing on as a new member. Maybe they heard I hang around with Jaime. :o
I'm going to give it a few weeks and try again. I sure hate to see the hobby loose all that old content.
John what happens when you try to sign in??
Don't worry all the threads are there!

John,
Joe told me that you can contact him at webmaster@railroad-line.com after the holidays and he will set up with a new password.
Everything transferred over to the new forum. Old links to the new forum will not work due to wording. So any links that worked on the old forum will not work.
Bernd
Are the threads from the original kit forum (www.kitforums.com) at the railroad-line?

Jaime
Not that I'm aware of. All of the threads that they are recovering are from the railroad-line. Does anyone have better information? I get about three clicks before a 403 error.
Jerry I go through all the screens with the robot and everything and when it asks for my email address for password reset I get an unrecognized email error. I have tried a couple times to look at thread that I know I posted on and get the 403 error. ::) I just wanted to see if my user name still showed up in the old posts.
I think I'll ignore railroad-line until they get the Very Annoying bugs worked out. Having to stop and clear cookies at relatively frequent and arbitrary intervals is extremely frustrating. I can't tell if it's just bad software or configuration/installation problems. (That's not an 'exclusive or', it's probably some of each.)
dave
Just posted a picture! I don't seem to be having the problems your having Dave! ;)
Jerry
I'm happy to report that today when I logged in the railroad-line forum it recognized my email address and let me reset my password. Progress. The bad news is that about every three clicks I had to delete my cookies from the site to get rid of 403 errors. I did make one post before giving up. It's good to see progress. Next time I'm going to get brave and try a picture in my post.
John,
There seems to be cookie issues with different plat forums being used. I haven't had a problem signing on after clearing the cookie jar. I also don't except cookies. Glad you finally got on.
Bernd
The re-logging on isn't working well for me. I still have to go through the whole delete cookies from forum procedure to get on...side note: any guess when a search forum will be installed?

My browser is set to delete cookies when I leave a forum. I've had no problems signing in after I did that.
Joe and company are still working on the problem of the search function.
Bernd
The search function works on mobile (like iPad or iPhone), just not desktop browsers.
I had been logging in to KitForums (Jamie's link) a couple of times a year and posting something in hopes it wouldn't be flagged as completely inactive. I'm sad to see it's now been deleted. The crew who made Jimmy D. the offer he couldn't refuse turned out to be complete business bozos; I hope it was their own money they lost and not somebody else's.

I sure do miss the old kitforums.com. I met so many of you fine folk there. We had such fun....
Well, we gave it the old college try as they say.
We are here now so let's make the best of it ;D
