Scratchbuilding / Modeling tools
October 07, 2026, 09:43:08 AM
I've started research on tools to start building kits and scratch builds.
I used to have a chopper and true sander but I was never very happy with them and looking for something better.
I did a search here and didn't see a thread on this topic but did see a post from Jeff where he had bought some Ultamation tools which look interesting.
Jeff, you mentioned that you couldn't get the chopper to work as well as shown in the companies video.
Have you been able to get it to work better and are you still happy with their tools.

Any suggestions for other sources of better cutters, saws and sanders?

Modeling Wizardry / Using AI to generate images
September 27, 2026, 07:09:47 AM
I've seen some here, Ron and TomO and others, post images of modeling ideas using AI.
I know I could watch YouTube videos to learn how to do it, but figured I'd get a head start getting input from members here.
Also, it might encourage others to try and do the same.

I know some AIs have free versions.
Can the free versions be used to generate images?
Can someone post the prompt they used to generate an image?

Thank you.

The O-Narrow Line / Geezer's Lounge (Rev 1) - Volume 6
September 05, 2026, 06:28:55 PM
Welcome to the newest Geezer's Lounge.
Thank you to everyone that contributes.
It's the best way for me to start my day.

Drove a little more than two to get to the Wind River Range.
I'm camped at the Skyline Drive Overlook.
The view here is amazing.
I'm .7 miles from tomorrow's trailhead.

This is just a small view of what I can see from here.
I'll try and get a better, wider view in a little bit.

Dave, can you please lock the previous lounge and pin this one.

Have a great evening everyone.

The O-Narrow Line / Leadville Colorado & Southern RR
August 14, 2026, 06:28:10 PM
I was in Leadville, CO today and while there I walked over to the Leadville RR.
The RR was narrow gauge but was converted to standard gauge in 1943.
You can read more about the line here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadville,_Colorado_and_Southern_Railroad

There isn't a prototype forum here so that's why I'm posting here.

The O-Narrow Line / Silverton Rail Yard Museum
August 04, 2026, 07:45:24 PM
Yesterday I visited the Silverton Rail Yard Museum.
Link to more information on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge RR: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durango_and_Silverton_Narrow_Gauge_Railroad

It's not a very big yard and you are allowed to roam the entire yard.
I took pictures of most of the things that there is to see.
I can't post all the pictures in this first post because of the forum limitations.
I'll spread it out over a few days.
First is the station.
This station isn't used any longer except as a storage building.
There was another station a little further up the line in town, but it's not there any longer, and that is where passengers deboard after coming from Durango.

I had to take this picture to show how beautiful the area around the yard is.

Inside and it's used just for storage.

A couple of placards that are outside.
I made these pictures a little bigger with the hope it makes it easier to read.

The O-Narrow Line / Como Roundhouse
July 30, 2026, 10:33:27 AM
While driving towards my next destination in Colorado I saw a sign for a roundhouse off to the right.
I made the right hand turn and less than a quarter mile sat this roundhouse in Como, CO.
Unfortunately the site is fenced off and is only open a few days out of the year.
I would have loved to get in there and look around.

This was the best I could do of getting a picture of the roundhouse.
Reminded me of the kit that SRMW made.

I visited the Georgetown Loop RR in Georgetown, CO. This is where the Devil's Gate Station is located.
I took picture of the steam loco there and shot video as the train left and went over the Devil's Gate Bridge.
After the train was gone I drove to the Silver Plume Depot where the train ride ends.
I got there just as the train was arriving.
Next I headed to Idaho Springs.
As I was driving I spotted an old mining area and pulled of the highway and took some pictures there.
Then made it to downtown Idaho Springs and took pictures of the Argo Mine.

This is the loco reversing into the station going across the Devil's Gate Bridge.

Good morning everyone and welcome to the newest lounge.
I'm so happy this thread has remained active and it's the best way to start my day.
Thank you to everyone that participates.

36 in Sioux Falls, sun, clouds and with later with a high of 77.

Coffee, sodas and OJ are ready.
Let's celebrate the new lounge with steak and eggs today.

I hope all are well.

Star and I walked around in town yesterday at Falls Park.
This is where the Big Sioux River runs through town and down a series of falls.

Gym first this morning then I have some research to do.

This was on the Buzzards Roost Trail in Rapid City.

Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Forum Christmas Card
December 19, 2025, 07:57:24 AM
On the RR-Line we had a thread where we'd all post a virtual Christmas card to the members.
I thought we could do the same here.

Modeling Reference Pix / Nevada Northern Railway Museum
November 03, 2025, 06:52:50 PM
I visited the museum in Ely, NV on Saturday.
While there I got a personal tour of the facilities there which I videoed.
It will be weeks before I get to editing and posting that video.
After the tour was finished I walked around the yard and took photos of the rolling stock and structures that weren't included in the tour.

Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Songs that you like
August 07, 2025, 08:32:44 AM
On the RR-Line I started a thread called Your Favorite.
It proved to be very popular and many contributed.
It was a good way to learn about different bands and music styles.
The other day Greg (Ensign) mentioned it and Dave gave the OK to start a thread here.

Last week I visited the California State Railroad Museum.
One of the volunteers gave me a great tour of a post office and described the working conditions which I thought were interesting and surprising.
Here's a link to that video: https://youtu.be/s8aLPgqmvQw
