The workers appreciate the chimney, otherwise...

Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Re: St Patrick’s Monday
March 17, 2025, 04:23:12 PM
Busy day for me.  First I took one dog to the vet.  (A bump that is probably just an infected wart, and the occasional 'she faints when I rub her ears' problem wouldn't happen in front of the vet!)  Then lunch with one group, and a meeting/presentation with another group.

So nothing accomplished in the train room today. Tomorrow, I have some clean-up/put-away to do in the home office tomorrow after the wiring project, then back to the train room.

Well, what little Irish background I have is orange.  Here's the post showing the NESL custom roof:  https://modelersforum.com/index.php?topic=6841.105

3 different outside appointments today (vet, lunch, afternoon meeting), so back to the train room tomorrow.

Here's the special order roof from NESL, where the clerestory is open the full length of the car:

I should get back to this project tomorrow...  My plan is to practice shaping the roof on the solid stock first.

Quote from: KentuckySouthern on March 17, 2025, 08:30:02 AMNicely done.  Sylvan makes nice models.

First meal with a new shirt usually ends up with something on it.  :P

What is the era of that Yellow Transit scheme?

For me, it's "the chance of spilling something rises exponentially when wearing a white t-shirt."

Quote from: deemery on March 14, 2025, 06:08:50 PMA more careful framing, with a train in the picture, probably using some focus stacking, would produce a champion, NMRA Calendar photo.

Dave,

I'm not a current member of the NMRA. I was some 50+ years ago, but they turned me off with all the politics in their judging.

I've been a very happy GDI since, 1973. Will never join again.

Tom
I can certainly understand that!  I'm still no fan of the Achievement Program.  But I will say that NMRA is at least better run from a business sense than it was 20 years ago.  And I get more from the NMRA Mag than from MR these days.

For me, "calendar shot" is intended as a very high compliment, a photo that really captures the sense of modeling in a dramatic way.

Well, I'm down off the ladder and it's put away.  Any time you can put away the ladder, it means you didn't kill yourself.  After checking the intertubes (using the now hidden ethernet cable running from the home office to the basement), I'll go down to the train room and open my present from NESL.

Will there be a chimney for that stove?  That's the only thing that caught my eye as other than perfect...

Foggy here, but starting to burn off.  52 on the way to 66.  When it's warmer, I'll climb back on the ladder and finish hiding the cable I ran yesterday.  Yesterday's Scotch club veered into Irish whiskeys in preparation for tomorrow.

It's been a fascinating walk down memory lane as James reposts his build thread over here.  Lots to see, I've been down to his layout a couple of times since moving back to NH, including an operating session.

Northeastern Scale Lumber sent me a birthday present, they enlarged the clerestory window opening on a piece of roof to match the old Ambroid car length.  I'll open that after I finish outside.

There was a piece on NPR this morning on why Canada isn't experiencing the egg shortage we are in the US:  https://www.npr.org/2025/03/16/nx-s1-5328519/the-egg-shortage-hasnt-impacted-canada-small-farms-may-have-something-to-do-with-it  (Transcript will probably show up tomorrow.)  Bottom line:  colder winters so more secure barns, less free-range exposure to wild birds, and smaller flocks.

Too bad the US government has waved a single finger at Canada...

When the fog burns off, I'll finish installing the new ethernet cable underneath the vinyl siding, and caulking the holes I drilled in the wall.  Then I'll open my birthday present from Northeastern Scale Lumber, custom roofs to fit the Ambroid coach.

One of my favorite not-modeled (by me) prototypes is the Gilipin Tram in Colorado.  This ran from mine to mine and then to processing mills.  It was 2' gauge with Shays.  There are several good books on Gilpin Tram.

James, you should start a separate thread to keep us up-to-date on the Flying Yankee.

(or is it there, and I didn't bookmark it?)

The date is wrong!  I know, because March 18 is my birthday, and I'm not accepting being even 3 days older!  :-)

Warming up from 30 to 59 today, but cloudy.  Even warmer tomorrow.

Today's goal will be to pick up the home office, which is a total disaster (but first I will drill the new hole for the ethernet cable.)
