Kit Building / RS Laser Courter Factory in N-scale
December 08, 2016, 04:45:52 PM
After some stagnation I decided to pick up a kit and build one in stead of just buying kits  ;)

The box.

The contents, lots and lots of windows.

Lasercut brick walls look really good .

Lots of bracing , wood for this is included in the kit.

I believe there are more then 80 windows in this kit , each window consists of 4 pieces, I'm doing them 8-12 per evening.

Brick wall primed and spray painted brick red. Sprayed a bit from the side and it worked , the gray of the primer shows as mortar.

So for the challenge I have decided to do the German World War 2 Loco, my second WW2 and train related model .

The box , always a great illustration on it. The color of the engine on the cover will be the color I will be making the model.

More then 250 parts , here they are .

The instructions use only a few words but the drawings are very clear, with all parts numbered. There is also a color scheme with numbers and names for the colors from several different manufacturers. The color scheme however is the one used after WWII, when the engine was used in civil service. I will be painting it in the color scheme used in the war.

I already built the Dubois Store from Branch Line, the other half is of course the Dubois House.

The parts.

Primed and first coat painted , the grayish color is Vallejo Air Pale Blue Grey , I decided to brush paint it.

Bought this off German ebay some time ago for a very nice price, I believe the owner was a bit daunted by the kit , don't know why it's not a very hard kit to build.

Primed all the parts with a spray can.

Primed parts with the colors I will be using, Vallejo Air Intermediate Blue , Sand and Blue ( Blue is a very light sea blue ).

The stuco part of the building has been done with Lucas texture paste, and here are the airbrushed parts.

Assembling windows and doors.

Loading dock doors , there are 2 platforms for trains in the kit , my structure will be an affiliate of Mayflower Movers and only service trucks and vans.

I bought 2 of these from nscalelaser.com , a British one man firm making American themed lasercut kits. Finally an N-scale kit that is a mainstreet structure but not DPM.

These are the parts  and the manual , the walls have first been coated with a textured paste from Lucas and then all the parts have been airbrushed with Vallejo Air Intermediate Blue and Sand.

The windows and doors are built up of several layers to create depth.

After all the layers are attached to the walls , and curtains and blinds included in the kit are in place the walls look like this.

These curtains are from a Kibri kit and the shop interior are photo's I googled and printed .

Then I assembled the walls , keeping them square with my steel cubes.

Adding the other halves of the chimneys, and the roof , everything fits without a problem.

This wonderful French layout won first prize at Ontraxs 2016, exceptional details ( just look at the curb stones ) and great interiors , the blue leds in the interiors are blue to make photography of the interiors easier.

This year at Ontraxs I had the pleasure of meeting Mike and his lovely wife Jenny who had brought Red Hook Bay with them. One of the things that makes this hobby so great is the friendships you make , and Mike is one of them eventhough before March 11th I had never met him in person. Mike surprised me with a great gift, FSM Branchline Water Tower, very very kind of him.

I had seen many photo's of Red Hook , seeing it in real life is another thing , absolutely fantastic with all the craftsmen kits , and everywhere you look something going on. Red Hook Bay was one of 2 layouts at Ontraxs that in my opinion stood out above the already great quality of layouts at Ontraxs.

I took some photo's myself and would like to share them with you.

I thought it would be fun to do 1 structure in 2 scales at the same time , see what the differences are and at the same time learn what I can do to improve building in both scales using those differences and hopefully your comments.

2 scales , 2 different sized boxes.

The N-scale parts. Tichy windows, less cast white-metal parts, and of course much smaller.

The H0 parts. Peel and stick windows and doors, more white-metal details

The same parts next to each other.

Bracing all the walls.

A & I wash, the wall that's done compared to it's holding part.

Kit Building / Saulenas in N-scale
December 01, 2015, 05:58:02 PM
Yesterday I started a build that will be going on my layout immediately ( I hope ), Saulenas Tavern, I think we have seen it in larger scales a few times here or on the old forum, so just a short impression of my build in N-scale.

The small plastic box this kit comes in.

The contents of that box.

The 2 colours I chose for Saulenas , Tamiya J.A. Grey and Vallejo Duck Egg Green, the Vallejo Air paint is also very good to use with a brush on wood. The windows , doors and ornaments in Tamiya JA Grey.

Bracing for the main walls .

The painted walls , the Duck Egg Green gets darker after a few hours of drying.

Corner posts and the walls , clearly darker now the right after painting.

Windows and doors assembled. They are peel and stick, something every N-scale door and window should be.

Started assembly of the walls , the base consists of 3 layers , stuck together and painted Badger Concrete, a more greyish concrete then that I used on the Somerville coal bin.

Easy curtains using masking tape.

The 4 main walls assembled.

This is actually a fun build , so much fun that I went back to the train room several times today whenever I thought the glue or paint had dried enough to go on.

Starting a larger kit this week, a bit intimidating one Somerville Junction by N-scale Architect.

Here are the usual photo's to start off a build.

This a build of the Wharton Iron Mill by N-scale Architect, however I will be changing it to a grain elevator , mill complex.

The contents of the box, I bought this 2nd hand and I'm not sure all of the parts are there, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Using templates provided I will be cutting out walls the next few days.

Layout Tours / Janbouli's Home Layout The Kannewton & CC
September 11, 2014, 09:22:49 AM
I suppose when starting on the second room part of my layout is a good time to start a thread on my layout here. If anyone not familiar with my layout wants to see more of it before this you can go to http://www.janbouli.com  or http://kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5114

My layout rooms are finally at a temperature to work in again.

Started with the LED lighting in the 2nd room, just experimenting how many strips of LED I need to have enough layout lighting and enough to take photographs without extra lighting.

What do you guys think? Myself , I am satisfied with this as layout lighting but think for photography I need 1 more strip.

Kit Building / A station for Clay Center
March 31, 2014, 05:54:46 PM
I wanted a nice station to go with the Tower from N-scale Architect , a few weeks ago I won Canaan station from Branchline on ebay Germany, although like the Tower it is not prototypical , I am going to use it for the Rock Island CC Line, it will be a station at an interchange of the Rock Island and the UP, in real they didn't have the one station , but on my layout it will be this Union Station

The box, you can see that this is not your average size N-scale kit.

Instructions , partly in color , with some nice prototype info and easy to follow instructions.

All the parts , at first glance very intimidating , when I'm done we'll know if it's a hard kit to do.

Kit Building / An H0 in between all the N-scale
March 29, 2014, 05:28:03 PM
A small H0 build for my future H0 harbor layout.

This is Model Junctions Kits ( made by B.E.S.T. ) Jim's Place in H0, Mike ( Mad Harry ) told me about these, I'm glad he did.

After I glued stripwood to the corners I braced the walls and glued them together.

A rather dark wash of A&I, intentional.

Then a Sky Blue , which is more of a light green , because the front was maintained a bit better I painted the front twice to give a better coating.

Balcony and porch floors and roof placed.

Also placed all windows and doors which are a cheap spray can green.

Kit Building / N-scale Architect Alto Tower
March 04, 2014, 05:46:47 PM
N-Scale Architect Alto Tower , Clay Center Tower on my layout

Seems like it's time to join the crowd here , and I thought a build thread would be the best way.

The kit comes in a sturdy box, essential because the parts are really fragile. The structure is prototypical for the Pennsylvania RR but I like it so much on my layout it will be the tower for the Rock Island yard at Clay Center.

Painted in Rock Island Maroon and DRGW Cream, the walls are lasercut wood, the trims , doors and windows are lasercut with peel and stick backing ( very useful in N-scale ).

The shingles on the side painted Maroon , I used masking tape but it bled through, not a problem because the part that bled through will be covered by trim.

All the trim parts and doors and windows.

It takes a bit of patience but the trimming in place gives a nice result.

The 3 pieces that make up the overhang.

Glued together with the floor installed , let to dry.

While the glue on the overhang dried I made up an other wall.

Overhang installed on the first wall.

Kit Building / GC Laser Auction House
December 22, 2013, 07:01:49 PM
The Model60 pledge has really got me going, started on this yesterday and I like it so much so far that I would rather have worked on it then go to work  ;)

First the package and the contents. The packaging is very vulnerable for such a fragile kit, I think this should definitely be boxed.

1. Posting on Modelers Forum / Ideas for improvements
December 17, 2013, 07:04:07 PM
Robert Maybe you've already thought of this  but my Dutch forum uses SMF as well so maybe you can use some tips. Here's one from me.

You can add a button at the bottom of a page that takes you to the Top with one click, very useful on long pages.

Just a short thread but it's a start isn't it.
The instructions, black and white but clear and understandable.

The contents , stripwood , sheets of shingled roofing, clapboard from which you cut the walls and cut out windows and doors.

Metal castings for doors , windows and stairs ready for priming, I also did the doors and windows for a church kit from AMB.

First piece of clapboard ready for cutting.

All the walls cut.

First set some bracing at the same time glued some of the walls in place, gave a wash with A&I and then painted them using masking tape and 2 spray cans. The Green is gloss paint but on the wood treated with A&I it comes out like a stain.

Mainbuilding put together.

The roofing , sheets of shingles , they have a little relief to them, I think this will make it easier to make them realistic. Loading docks glued together.

Ready for weathering of the roof , adding stairs to the side and then place this into a hill side.
