Layout Tours / My old home layout
March 14, 2020, 10:29:27 AM
As I am breaking up the old layout, I could not avoid a bit of nostalgia and take some pictures to remember it by. The room is 20 feet by 30 feet and was added to our present home 27 years ago. The layout was on four levels of continuous scenery and was computer controlled with a programme by Winlok and Digitrax. The layout was featured in two articles of Continental Modeller in 2006.Here are some pictures of the trackplan on the computer screen. Apologies for the poor quality due to the flash. The turnouts are operated by clicking a mouse on the icons.

Scratchbuilding / Company houses
December 25, 2019, 11:34:31 AM
A friend has tasked me to scratchbuild three one-storey company houses to be displayed on a new exhibition layout his club is building. He sent me an Alamy photo of what he required. I will not post it here due to copyright laws etc. However here is a floorplan of the houses required.

Kit Building / CubicForm
December 20, 2019, 12:40:55 PM
Hi I have been missing in action for awhile. On a recent cruise to the Canary Islands our ship lost all propulsion and was towed back to Tenerife. We spent four extra days there and then four days at sea before returning to Blighty. To relieve my boredom I bought a fun thing which being a Cathedral is topical around Christmas time. It is a three D jigsaw which builds without glue into a nice model for the princely sum of 7 euros.
Here is the box.

Scratchbuilding / Kjeungskjaer lighthouse
October 07, 2019, 10:06:55 AM
I have left a space on the harbour of "Norge" for a lighthouse. I am going to attempt to scratch this famous norwegian lighthouse. It is located just outside to entrance to Trondheim. The body of the lighthouse is some 57ft high. It is in reality located on a man made platform out to sea. However I will place it on my dock and because I do not want it to overpower the scene I am going to reduce it to about 80% of it's scale size.

Vehicle Modeling / Carson radio controlled VW T1 Bus
September 20, 2019, 04:45:43 AM
Mr DHL arrived with the Carson radio controlled VW. Those who are following my Norway Layout build will know that I made a road along the front of the layout for this little VW. The product comes well packaged with all you need to run it straight from the box. before I can do that I will need to read the 7 pages of instructions. Initially it looks like the left hand knob controls the speed while the right is used to control direction. For the princely sum of 112 euros inclusive of postage I think this is a winner! The model is HO scale 1:87.

Kit Building / Stangel HO house/shop kit
August 27, 2019, 12:15:39 PM
Stangel (www.stangel.pl) offers a range of HO and O gauge models of mainly germanic structures. I bought four kits at a recent show in Utrecht to build for my new "Norge" layout. The beautiful norwegian town of Alesund has some stunning Art Deco architecture. These kits remind me of some of those buildings, so here goes..............
The kit comprises of cardboard laser cut parts. some thick acrylic for window glass and some paper tiles for the roof.

Kit Building / Heljan Danish Farm
December 29, 2018, 10:41:34 AM
Continuing with possible buildings for my proposed Norwegian layout.........
At a recent model railway show I picked up a plastic kit - Heljan's Danish Farm#204 in HO for £4.95 ($7.00).
After being ruled by them for centuries, the Danes are not particularly liked by the Norwegians; however the architecture is similar in both countries. So I thought a lttle farm scene with some Viessmann "pecking chickens" and some Noch "mooing cows" might be fun. Perish the thought that the budget for my farm scene has just jumped from $7.00 to $112..............

Layout Tours / Cheffley chickens
December 05, 2018, 03:11:59 PM
At the Eurospoor show in the Netherlands recently ! was intrigued by a diorama which had moving pecking chickens.
It was explained to me that it was by german manufacturer Viessmann. I could not find one at the show so I ordered one on Ebay.
On Cheffley there is a farm yard with the farmer's wife feeding some chickens. I thought this novelty would be a perfect upgrade.
Here is the original scene on Cheffley. The Viessmann box - part 1528 Huhnerfof bewegt.
The last picture shows the display which I will fit to Cheffley. At a flick of a switch a magnet circles below the surface of the chickens which makes their heads bob up and down as if they are pecking at feed on the ground.
Stupid I know but it lightens the mood at the moment...............

Kit Building / WS-LaserCut
December 04, 2018, 02:19:28 PM
Another laser cut kit from Germany. Travelling around Europe over the last year - Norway, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France and the Netherlands - I began to notice a similarity amongst the architecture between the various countries. In Germany and France for example I found thatched cottages that would not look out of place in an English village.
Each country lends influences to one another. OK this is a long winded apology for building a German house kit and ultimately passing it off as Norwegian. The kit retails for about $40 but I was able to pick it up for £15 from Gaugemaster. It is Artikel nr: 008 - Siedlungshaus Eisenheim from WS-LaserCut.
Here is the picture of the model and the contents of the box. Hey guess what the instructions are in English.............

Kit Building / MKB Harbour Crane
December 01, 2018, 06:38:16 AM
My sheds now need a crane. This is the second kit. The box, the drawing of each part - all 98 of them and the parts themselves. No instructions come with the kit other than it is not suitable for anyone under 10 years, however each step A through to L is illustrated by a line drawing.

Here is a six minute video of our club's 12ft by 12ft exhibition standard HO logging layout which made it's last appearance at Eurospoor, Utrecht, Netherlands. All the structures were built by me (Mad Harry). Because we have lost our club's premises we cannot keep the layout and it on sale now on Ebay.

Kit Building / MKB Models
November 18, 2018, 01:59:35 PM
I picked up this kit at the Eurospoor model railway exhibition in Utrecht, Netherlands where I met Janbouli.

The kit is a harbor shed (harbour shed) in HO for my new Norwegian layout.
It comprises of instructions in German but with useful step by step drawings of the construction process.
The components are a hard cardboard that slot into one another to form the sheds. They are five - 2 double and 1 single. I just use PVA applied with a toothpick to construct the sheds.

Kit Building / Dockside Crane
October 26, 2018, 10:27:36 AM
My new Norwegian layout will have several nautical features, so I thought a dockside crane should be built.
I am building a Dapol dockside crane. There are couple of riders with the kit - not suitable for children under 10 years old - so I qualify there :) .
Dapol kits are the old Airfix kits of my youth - Dapol state "The tools used to produce this model are over 50 years old - the moulded numbers on the parts may not match those used in the instructions". A cursory look confirms this to be so................
Here are the kit parts and instructions.

Kit Building / Architecture & Passion
October 24, 2018, 12:08:03 PM
While I was at the Montelirail show in France recently I came across some interesting card kits.
I picked up a couple in n scale 1/160 to use in the background of my new Norwegian layout to force the perspective.
Here is one I have built earlier together with the pack of the next build.

Modeling Reference Pix / "Kembleford"
June 12, 2018, 02:36:33 PM
Here are a few pictures of a lovely Cotswold village called Brockley which is used as "Kembleford" in the 2013 British TV series Father Brown. This is an iconic village featuring the beautiful golden Cotswold stone buildings.
Ignore the dodgy couple hanging around the church...................

Kit Building / Lunde Studios The Bon Ton
May 17, 2018, 10:34:04 AM
I decided to build this department store. The usual difficult process of trying to glue the walls together without getting glue everywhere.
The clamps came in useful and I used wires threaded throgh the windows to hold the main wall together while the glue takes.
The idea is to make the most of the four/five floors which are highly visible through the front windows of the department store as scene stealer..........

A bit of history for Magnuson were sold to Walthers, DPM were sold to Woodland Scenics and they were all started by Don Lunde; who has now a new company Lunde Studios. A great bit of re-cycling...............

Kit Building / Magnuson Victoria Townhouses
May 13, 2018, 06:39:13 AM
This kit has been kicking around for too long. The problem was the warped resin roof which broke in two possibly a decade ago and the kit was put aside.
However I decided to have another go at it. After several goes at trying to glue the parts together only one wall remained undecided to join the rest of the structure. I have not really been into weights and clamps but enough was enough and I bought a big one!
Hopefully this will persuade the wall to join the others and I can get on with completing the structure.

Kit Building / Final Pictures - Maienfeld
May 09, 2018, 03:59:04 PM
Here are the pictures of the completed model kit. I had to supply a new roof for the missing part over the door on the platform. I tried to style this in the same material as the cafe/waiting room. The chimneys were finished in a white render paint ( paint with fine sand added). I augmented some of the missing drain pipes and guttering. Some of the glazing material was also missing. But for £5 you cannot complain.
Oh and the daily train has just arrived......................
