Hey Frank:

Beautiful job so far.

Karl

Thanks Karl. The really tough part is in front of me. I have steel mill drawings that I purchased from Michael Rabbitt. They are to scale, not to the reduced dimensions that Walthers used. There is a tremendous amount of detail, so this is going to be a big challenge and take quite a bit of time. I want to install lighting and possible have the conveyor work. Stay tuned.

Everything's looking great Frank!  I love those big steel mills.  Gives our coal hauling railroads a place to deliver our goods!   ;)

The clouds/rain look great too.   :)

Bob for your kind words. progress is slow. Lots of honey-do's and work on our regional convention interrupting the layout progress. i was talking to Doug Geiger and put he me on to several modelers that make details for the steel mill. WOW, this is going to cost a few bucks, but since the mill is up close, why not. And it is going to take more time, but the results should be awesome.
The clouds need a few more details and the Rolling Thunder Lightning will be lengthened to about 16 feet along the back wall. Great effect. Thanks again.

Here is a link to Model Railroader video of my layout that MR has been advertising. Its short, but in my humble opinion, shows action, detail and size better than the photos. Enjoy.http://mrr.trains.com/videos/layout-visits/2018/10/video-ho-scale-morristown-erie

Frank,

That video really shows off your beautiful scenery, especially the rock work.  I love the weathering on the truss bridge, something often missed on a layout.

Jerry,

Thank you for your kind words. I think the video shows the layout in a total and better light than photographs. I just wished they showed the rest of the video that was taken. This just my humble opinion. Glad you like the weathering on the truss bridge. There actually four of them currently on the layout. It took about four days to paint each bridge. I used mixable oil pigment. Once you get used to the effects, it is very nice to use and great results.

Good morning All,

I have been putting some time in on the steel mill. I have an extensive library of photos of blast furnaces et. all, and have been looking at all the details. I have added an overhead crane with a heavy duty hook, piping along the right wall and increased the height of the pour / casting walls. On order is a mud gun and tap hole drill. I have also started to look at overhead lighting and some means of lighting the molten steel running in the casting walls. I have also been looking through the SS LTD catalog for pails, etc. to add for details.

Currently everything is painted with grey primer. Once the majority of details have been added, then i will start painting with red oxide, flat black and some water based pigments to really weather the structure.

Enjoy the pics.

Frank,

Doesn't Gordon Geiger have some of his lit up?.  I know he has some kind of effects on his mill.

Steve,
I know that Gordon has sound and light effects in his rolling mill and electric furnace, but i am not aware that he has any animation in the blast furnace. I will call him and ask. I had a visitor here the other week that mentioned that he had seen a blast furnace with lighting in the trough that simulated motion. He did not remember the layout ( too bad ) but i do know several modelers that are heavy into the steel industry, so i will be asking them if they have seen anything like this.

I need some help finding brass etched stairs. The only company i find on the internet is Gold Medal Models. They do not have any contact information and they appear to offer only standard fire escape units. I need brass stairwells that are quite long so they will go from the casting floor of the blast furnace to the ground in one piece. I am rather limited in space. Does anyone have any suggestions. There was a company at the Amherst train show selling lots of etched brass stairs, etc. but i do not know the name of the company. Any help is greatly appreciated.
