Frank,

Glad you found more parts for the stairs on the mill.

I agree that most plastic kit roofs are way out of scale/thick. The corrugated paper seems like a great solution. Looking forward to seeing how it looks.

I think I've only used a plastic kit roof once. It's all part of making the model look realistic and less a toy.

Tom,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm really like the paper corrugated. I have primed both sides and will be weathering the from side later today. The inside will be painted rust from a rattle can. The inside will only be seen from a few angles so I will not be weathering the inside of the corrugated sheet. I am a little concerned about mounting the paper to insure that it lays flat. I might adhere a piece of cardstock on the inside to stiffen it up. I'll let you know in a day or two.

Glad you found out about Showcase Miniatures. Very nice people running the company and the products are first rate.

Good morning All,

I have been working on the steel mill recently, or should I say continuously. There is still many facets of the mill to be completed, but while I am waiting for items I ordered, I decided to paint the structure. In a prior attempt on the mill several years ago, i used the red primer paint from Walmart Colorplace. Well, as things constantly change, that color is no longer available, so I have to find a replacement. Why, you ask did I like the Walmart color. Well, it was a very light red oxide, probably with little or no black. When painted, the model did not look dark, which is bad for models. Some are going to say, why not mix your own color and air brush it. Believe me, the thought did pass my mind, BUT, this is a big model and would have added countless more hours to the build cycle. I guess I am getting lazy in my old age. Give me a rattle can any day, along as you can find the right color. Well, i can't say that I found the right color, but I found a much better color at Ace.
So-o-o, i painted  the basic structure. After letting it dry for several days, i am now painting several areas of the structure like the casting floor, crane, etc... I am worried about darkness of the paint job.Hopefully interior lighting will help " illuminate" the interior details. Besides, steel mills were dark and dingy places. I know, I have been in a couple.

My concern is what will it look like on the layout. Well time will tell. In the meantime, here are a couple of pics of the main building. I recently received a "mud Gun" and "hole Tapper". They are assembled and painted and will be installed as soon as they dry.

I have a lot of the exterior components primed, but not assembled into a major element. That is still months away, probably. I have also started lighting the main building and looking at ways to light the exterior elements. More soon.

That is a good looking paint job Frank.

I know this is a large task and I will be following this to the end.

Steve, Curt and John,

Thanks Guys for your comments. Progress is slow on this model. Lot's of issues to deal with, lighting, interior details, color, etc... I'm not as far a long as i would like to be. Too many holiday issues to deal with. Bah humbug, only kidding!

The mailman showed up today with a pleasant surprise from the NMRA. Back in July, they asked for layout photos for their 2019 calendar. Well, my layout made the January 2019 page. WOW. Here is a pic of the page. Nice honor. Enjoy.

Here is a link to Model Railroader video of my layout that MR has been advertising. Its short, but in my humble opinion, shows action, detail and size better than the photos. Enjoy.http://mrr.trains.com/videos/layout-visits/2018/10/video-ho-scale-morristown-erie
