This is coming together wonderfully.  Any plans to install lighting in any of the shacks?   8)  It's be a shame to have Delwin's all lit up and the shacks dark.   ;)

John,

Yepper, got to keep moving. Don't want any rust to get in my joints. And, thank you for the kind words of support.

Bob,

It really surprises me just how great the scenes have been coming together. Much better than the old layout. I do plan on lighting the shacks but not sure how yet. Meaning not sure where the lights will go. I'm going to have a light on a utility pole outside the shacks and I'll have a little shade light over each door. Just not sure of the interiors other than the lady in the window.

Jimbo,

We all know that Slim's LEDs do catch fire. Just ask Jimmy! I know what the lady in the shack wants and I can't help her.  8) Thank you for the compliment.

I found some time to start applying shingles to the roofs. I decided to use Campbell shingles for all five of the shacks. This created much more work than simply using the rolled roofing but I wanted this particular look.

The roof panel that came with the kit was a little smaller than I wanted so I used it as a pattern to cut one just a "bit" larger.

In the following photo you can see just how big a "bit" is. 8) 8)

Obviously the old roof panel is on the top.

While at last years Expo, I picked up ten panels of lined chipboard. I used the lined chipboard to cut five roof panels.

I laid the roof panels flat and applied the shingles. It took 36 rows for each of the five shack roofs. When the shingles were dry, I cut off the excess but left a little on each side. I planned on adding an exterior rafter so I wanted the extra shingles to cover the top of the rafter.

Its also easier to apply the shingles to the panels when flat as opposed to doing it with bracing under the panel. My bracing came later.

I've seen models in the past where the exterior rafter is glued to the bottom side of the roof panel. This allows the viewer to see the rafter and the edge of the cardboard and then the roofing material. In my opinion this detracts from the model. This method works when using rolled roofing material as you can bend it over the edge to cover the edge of the chip board.

When all the roof panels were shingled and dry I added the bracing. I marked each roof to fit one particular shack. Assuming they are all the same; however, I did brace each one as it fit on a particular shack.

The underside of the roof panels were all painted white to match the windows, doors and the exterior rafters.

I painted a few scale 2 X 6's white and set them aside to dry. When dry I cut them to fit under the Campbell shingles and edge glued them to the edge of the roof panel.

When the rafters were dry, I used a new #11 blade and trimmed the shingles flush with the outside of the rafter.

I then trimmed the ends of the four exterior rafters on each shack.

More in a few.
