Here is how they look after trimming the rafter ends.

I still need to add the ridge shingles, add a roof top pipe for the bathroom, stain the shingles and the exterior rafters.

Very nicely done Tom. :)  I had a similar build on my N scale layout.

I finished the roofs on the five fishing shacks this afternoon.

Most people, and I've seen some on this forum, don't finish the ridge cap on the structures. Some just leave it like the one shown in the photo below.

This is actually my fish camp shack and I need to add two more strips of shingles. One on each side of the ridge.

I cut the shingle strips in small pieces so that the single piece has two shingles on each. I then folded the shingle in the center, wet it and apply it to the ridge of the roof.

For my five shacks, I had to use 200 short shingle pieces, 40 per shack ridge.

This certainly looks better than the one shown below.

I still need to add a vent pipe on each roof and then stain and weather the shingles.

Wow, you are really making some great progress Tom.  Lots of attention to detail is making the shacks really standout models.  Although I've seen other folks do the roof like you showed I've never tried putting shingles on before attaching the cardstock to the building.  I may try this with my build.  Thanks again for all the pics!

Mark,

I appreciate the compliment. I at all possible, I'll do the shingles first(provided I'm using Campbells) and then attach the roof. I then if you are using other brand shingles, the roof should be in place first.

Worked on the fishing shacks over the past week.

I painted five vent stacks for the shacks. These are nothing more than the little red tube that fits on the end of the nozzle of a compressed-gas duster. It just happened to be five inches long. I cut five equal length pieces.

I then painted them with Floquil Weathered Black.

While the vents were drying, I started picking the shingles on the fishing shacks. When first applied, they are really flat and don't look natural or weathered.

I used a #17 Xacto blade to lift many of the shingles.

I then applied one coat of Hunterline Driftwood A&I stain to the roofs. Forgot to take the photo of the roofs here but you can see them in subsequent posts.

More in a few.
