One the upper and lower sides of the tower there are brackets for mounting chain wheels. These wheels turn the pulleys which raise and lower the coal chutes.

Walthers wants us to imagine the wheel turns the pulleys as there is no bar connecting the them.

I drilled a small hole in the chain wheel. I used .019" diameter brass wire and made a very small crimp in one end. I then bent the wire at 90 degrees and glued it to the chain wheel.

Prior to gluing the pulleys in place, I drilled small holes in them using the same size drill bit. I first glued the pulley pads in place.

When dry I added the pulleys.

The next photo shows the chain wheel, bar and pulleys in place. This is a great little added visual addition to the tower.

Here's how it looks painted.

Walthers also includes some thread for use as chains. Nothing looks like a chain except a chain. Not even thread looks like HO scale chain.

The thread was place in file 13 for use when the trash goes out.

I found some old Campbell HO chain. Not sure I have enough but I also had some HO brass chain that can be darkened.

Now, doesn't this look more realistic?

I also added four more chain wheel bars to each of the four lower corners of the tower. These four control the coal chutes under and in the center of the coal tower.

Back to the LED lighting. I added three goose necks to the coaling tower over each door.

Here is how the lighting looks.

I hope to have more on this build tomorrow afternoon.

PRR Modeler

Great modeling Tom. Chain looks 100% better than thread.

Curt,

Thank you, I hope to get more done today. However, I've been caught up in the "honey do stuff"!

Some 40+ years ago Durango Press offered a clean out rack. I purchased one from DeWitt's Train Depot for around $4.00. Today I finally got around to building it.

Of course I drastically changed mine. The clean out rack is now sold through J L Innovative for $8.50.

Here is the kit photo taken from the J L Innovative page.

Here is the double sided rack I scratch built.

I also made a few extra bars and hooks to get at those nasty "clinkers" hidden in the firebox.

It still needs heavy weathering.

I made some planks for the Hostlers to walk on when cleaning out the firebox.

Not sure where I'll place the clean out rack. Either on the side of the coal tower or on the side of the water columns.
