Sure is nice to have a lot of room for engine facilities on your layout.

Steve,

Yes, I do freely admit I'm very fortunate to have the space for the layout and service area.

Wonderful progress!

Note to self - wear a protective cup if Greg is running a train around that outside loop.   :P :o

Bob,

Much appreciated, thank you. Yes, or we can just ban him from running trains in the center section. Spur tracks and siding are way toi slow for Greg.

Tom - The ash pit fire is a feature I have never seen before.  Good touch!  I like your ash pit hoist better than the loader. But I guess it will save some labor costs so some of our guys will be out of a job. . . . Oh,yeah, I forgot about all the grading, ballasting, and track laying that has to be done.  We'll need to hire some more helpers to finish the job.  Maybe Farmer Perkins will give us a few of his orange pickers on a temporary basis.  That is, unless they have all migrated to Rochester, N.Y. for summer work.

Bill: AKA: Judge,

The fire in the pit is cool, er, hot. I like the hoist better as well.

All the migrant orange pickers are up north now. Besides, if I put them to work in the yard area, they can join the union. If so, we'll never get rid of them.

Today I worked on finishing the tower coal shed track. The shed has a raised portion for the hoppers to dump coal. I marked off the area I wanted elevated.

I did the same on both ends of the shed. I was going to use the saber saw and cut out the plywood. I then had an idea.

I placed two pieces of cork on the lines and it was the perfect height for the track and shed.

I glued two pieces of cork together in the front and rear of the shed. I tacked the end piece in place as I needed just a slight curve to that piece.

Just to be safe, I added some weight and let it dry overnight.

I don't have the AC on in here so I'll need to get a cold Diet Pepsi. Back in a few.

This morning I began sanding the cork into a ramp on the one end.

I used a #36 course Aluminum Oxide sandpaper for the job.

15 minutes later and half way done.

Getting close -

I saved all the cork dust as it makes for great ground cover and dead leaves.

By the end of this project I was getting tired. I also cut the grass this morning.

So, I'm fast forwarding and the ramp is finished and the track in place. The track is not secure at this time as I still need to paint the coal shed and add details.
