Let me say thank you for all the support. After much deliberation and modeling with what I have on hand I have come up with this yellow color. I am wondering if it is close to what is intended and if I should try and change it. All criticism welcome. You can't hurt my feelings, as I don't have any.

Gerald, I will admit I'm not a fan of the color, but the real question is do you like it and how it goes with your layout to your eye?

Gerald, first let me welcome you to the forum and congratulations on your first build thread. On the F&SM, George's buildings are mostly earth tones but he has plenty of bright colored building mixed in, many painted yellow. Right now you think it might stick out like a clown in a crowd of business suits, but weathering will tone it down. If it helps, take some time going through John's FSM photo thread and look at some of George's buildings that are yellow and decide if you want to go with that color.

If you decide to tone the yellow down you can an apply chalk.  The process is easy and I really like the results.  I'm currently using the process on two builds for my layout.  See the S&S RR build thread. Let me know if you have any questions.

John's powders advice is sound, and definitely use his FS&M thread to study George's work. Above all, even if you think it was a mistake, continue the build. Doug Foscale has a great blog and I was going back a couple of years re-reading them. One of the topics was on making mistakes. In short, he encouraged making them because there's no better learning experience. So, keep building, my friend.

What color does George call for in the kit. I believe it was Depot Buff. The closest color I have come to that is Tamiya Dark Yellow Spray paint. It is what I use as A replacement for Floquil Depot Buff. Its almost an exact match.

I think the color will look good when toned down a bit-  using some fine steel wool on the walls is a nice way to weather down colors and I do agree that chalk powders/ pastels do an amazing job of weathering walls-grays and browns are great colors to use on walls.  A little heavier chalk around the bottom of the building can replicate the dirtier siding that is close to the ground- its a subtle but effective technique for increasing realism. 
     Remember, every model that you build increases skills!

Glad to have you on the forum. Even glader to see you building your first FSM kit. You'll have a blast regardless. I'm looking forward to your build. Keep the pictures coming because we love pictures.


I hadn't built any fancy craftsman kits when I built my first FSM and the instructions in the FSM kit were super wonderful and I ended up with a nice kit in the end. You're doing great.


Be sure to ask lots of questions here. Folks here love to give their opinion
