A true story about Randy Pepperock and Downtown Deco that everyone needs to read. A few years ago, Randy made the sojourn to the Expo as a vendor. I had admired several of his kits, but hadn't built any. I particularly liked the Addam's Avenue 3 kit and bought one at the Expo. It sat for several months while other projects came and went. Finally, I brought out the kit to build. To my disappointment, all four walls were so badly warped or twisted that building it was impossible. I had built several of Ed Fulasz's kits, so it wasn't my first hydrocal rodeo. I emailed Randy and explained the problem. He said being a one man operation, sometimes things happen and he would make it right. A few days later, what I assumed was a replacement kit arrived. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and had not only a replacement, but two complete sets of walls and two extra side walls for practice, AND they were perfect! This kind of outstanding customer service is one reason I have bought several more Downtown Deco kits and will continue to support Randy and his business. Every other DD kit I've bought has been perfect.  I just ordered this kit and encourage all you hydrocalphobic modelers do the same. You won't be disappointed.

I've built several of Ed Fulasz's/JD kits and have several of Randy's DD kits ready to be built but others are on the front burner.

Very nice responses. You get a nice kit. The best part in my opinion, you support someone who gives a damn.
If only everyone did. Don't get me wrong, you cannot expect everyone to be as professional as Randy. I dig that. But just care about those who support you.

I have built a number of Randy's kits and highly recommend them.  The casting detail is great. Hydrocal is still the best material for modeling stone and masonry. It takes a lot of chalk to get the texture right with resin castings.

The only problem with hydrocal kits is "catastrophic failure" if you drop it.  When I was working on my plaster (Model Masterpieces) CM Roundhouse, I lived in mortal fear of an accident! 


Finishing plaster kits can be a lot of fun, there are several techniques that produce great results.  They start with the Great Debate, whether to seal the plaster or apply the finish over the raw plaster.  (I usually seal the plaster.)

Dave, I agree. I shipped a SRMW stone roundhouse to a friend. As you know it comes in two boxes. I put each box inside a box, than put those boxes inside an other box. In arrived destroyed.
Took my friend 4 months and three appeals to collect the insurance. He had to get letters documenting the value at 800. What a hassle. Than the post office told him, they would be throwing the kit in the trash. What a waste. He asked if they would give him 600 plus the kit. They said no. That was down right stupid.

I had one of my Downtown Deco kits at a train show where I was building one. Someone picked my kit with all four walks glued together to look at it. And dropped it on the concrete floor. Randy promptly sent me four new walls for my kit at no charge. He has great customer service.
