WOW, WOW.!!! Thank you Tom and the rest of the SBG for taking the day trip to see the other Tom's layout. I have a passion for steel mills, having worked for USS one summer and attending college in Pittsburgh. There is something magical about all the buildings, smoke, smells that stay with you. for those following my railroad, I plan on a steel mill area. The railroad approach on two levels is done, now it is on to building location, trackwork, etc. seeing this layout gives me more ideas and incentive to really get going on this portion of the layout. This area speaks of lighting, sound and more details to explore. Thank you for your photos, keep posting  more pictures please. I really need the encouragement. Absolutely great guys, thanks.

Frank,

We had a great time and I have lots of photos to upload. I put that green coal pusher on last night just for you! There is so much going on around a steel mill. It can keep you switching for hours.

I'll have more uploads later this evening. Thanks for checking in.

Thanks Tom,
And if you haven't guessed it, I am in the train room working on the dual track bridge leading to materials bins for the steel mill. I am really stoked about the steel mill. Boy am I in trouble. Thanks for the great pictures of the other Tom's layout. I'll keep looking for more photos later in the day after I get back from working on my neighbors layout.

Tom and  SBG thanks for coming down and seeing the P&WV and Union RR. It is a lot to try and under stand operations but the group did really well for the first time. Structures are still my first love and operation comes right in at second. . If any one has any question please let me know. Frank/ erie man if I can help answer any question let me know. I worked at Clairton Work from 72 to 82 when 5000 in our plant got laid off. You needed 25 years to keep your job. Funny thing is I got my pension papers last week.
Thanks again for the nice comments.

Tom

Great looking railroad and welcome to The Modeler's forum.  I worked in the Auto Industry for 32 years and spent my time using that steel you produced.  I hope you will become a regular here.  Looking forward to the updates of your layout thread.

Tom,

Thank you for the wonderful layout that you have created. Brings back old memories. I was a summer intern 1965 at the USS research Center in Monroeville. They would take many of us on tours of several mills around Pittsburgh. I graduated from Carnegie Tech in 1966. I don't get back there anymore, but have fond memories of the school, city and USS. Made a lot of great friends. It is one thing to see a steel mill from afar and another to take a tour through the living, breathing monster. On one of the tours while standing near a blast furnace, it started to rain. so much for a clean suit. fortunately, I was in the control room during the downpour. As I progress on my steel mill area, if you see any issues in my posting, please let me know. In case you don't know, my railroad is The Morristown & Erie railroad - Western division. Please stop by and take a look for my progress. I really like to build scratch structures or modify them. The steel mill will be one of my major features on the layout. I am cramming a lot of buildings in a small area, well kinda small.

Tom, Welcome to our little crazy corner of the world.

Again, thanks for the tour and the Operations 101 course you held Saturday. I was awed by your work on the layout and amazed at the complexity of the operations.

You were very understanding with a bunch of novices and I know all of us appreciated you patience with our hundreds of questions. I look forward to seeing you and your group in action.

Thanks again Tom and don't be shy about getting up here to see the St.L&D.

Greg,

Thanks for posting more pictures of Tom's ( not  Tom  L's layout because he doesn't have one yet, unless you count the pieces). I recall that Tom L. had mentioned that the layout was two levels, but totally forgot about it until I saw your photos. Keep them coming. Looks like a lot of good stuff on the lower level as well.
