John,
a priceless post. Some really great info here. I have done small objects using Amazing Mold, this opens up a whole new horizon for my scratch building.  Thanks....

Thanks for following along.  Warning: Casting stuff is addicting to scratch builders. There are a lot of good materials out there - but also some real junk.  My advice is to find what works for you and stick with it.  I will be sticking with the two mold materials I mentioned in the thread unless they screw them up or they are not available for some reason. The same is true for the 305 resin.

I just removed the mold boxes from the Delabarre's Tool and Die castings.  I posted all the pictures on my S&S RR build thread if your interested in following up.  The bottom line is that three of the castings broke.  I'm sure glad I decided to make the molds. From now on the first step with any of my older hydrocal kits will be to pour molds of the castings before I do anything else, to protect my investment. I believe that this is just a characteristic of hydrocal - it just keeps getting harder and more brittle with time. I had a some hydrocal castings under the layout that I made probably 20 years ago. I bent them until they broke and it was a shattering not a clean break like you would have with a casting that was a few weeks or even a year old. Any way lesson learned and back to building Threadwell's. Tomorrow, we will be gluing resin castings together.

Thanks John , a good reason to make molds of the kits I have , hope I can find the right materials here.
I love photo's, don't we all.

Fantastic tutorial, John. You should consider doing an Expo clinic or even a DVD.

I buy the Smooth-on products off Amazon and the 10:1 mold material from Micro-Mart. I don't know if they will ship international or what it would cost for shipping.

Seriously!

I may start doing clinics at some point but right now I have a railroad to build. I made my living giving presentations so I know how much work is involved in doing a good clinic. Thank you for the vote of confidence.

Today,  the walls started to go together on this build. Once I got the mortar lines lined up I wasn't about to let them move.  Do you think I used enough clamps?

On one of my resin pours I had some left over so I made a partial casting and used it to make a Pan Pastel Color chart for my workbench. I'm still playing with the colors I want to use for the castings.

Finally, for today, I finished laying out the locations for the baseboards and slid the complete diorama baseboard out of position on the layout and got it ready to go to my workbench.
