Great scene, John. The whole thing fits together so nicely -- building architecture, terrain, colors. Looking forward to seeing it all in person sometime.

What a great looking building. It will be very impressive on the layout.

Looks like a perfect fit John , it took me a while to realize how much nicer it is to build as a diorama that can be fit right in the layout.

My approach is to build to fit the location - sometimes very little kit bashing is required and sometimes the kit becomes a box full of parts. When I started over on my layout I decided to build the mountains and scenery in the background and then build structures that fit - rather than building dioramas and filling in between them with scenery. I'm really enjoying this approach. You will notice that I like elevation change - this is a mountain railroad there will be only two relatively flat section of the layout.

For today's update, I would like to revisit a subject that we were discussing on Vince's thread about cutting foam on dioramas.  I need to cut dig a ditch on my Threadwell's diorama for the LED wiring. Here is a picture of the ditch. No I didn't have Raymo arrange for a backhoe.

I picked up my Rotary Tool and had an abrasive wheel attached and decided to give it a try.  I would normally put a mill cutter in for this job but probably will use an abrasive wheel the next time I need to do this. This took about 1 minute including cleaning up with the shop vac.

Here is a picture of the wheel and the ditch when I stopped to take a picture.

A board will be added at the bottom of the ditch with all the wire connections for the LED's. I will then add a top and cover it over with sand. I have more wires to route here from the other builds in the diorama.

Today, I also worked on the trim and roofing for the Delabarre structures.  I started by cutting lots of rafter ends. Bob provides a chart in the instructions with all of the dimensions for each part of the structure. I just setup the chopper for the right angle and length and chopped away. The rafters were stained with A&I so they went right from the chopper into the A&I cup.

The gauges I'm using on my chopper where the free gifts that Hal Reynolds gave out at the last few EXPO's. They are thicker than the gauges that come with the chopper and work much better, in my humble opinion. Hal they are sure getting used on my workbench.

After their bath in A&I the rafter ends where spread out on a paper towel to dry.

This picture was take about half way through the process.  I need six different sizes to complete this build.

I take these pictures to start my fix list. Zooming the pictures really let's me do a good job of inspecting the model.
