At this point I wanted to take a set of evaluation pictures.  I'm not happy with the way the tar paper roof is photographing.  Like I said above it look much better to my eye - the camera seems to be making the light color lighter and the darker areas darker. I'm going to sleep on this one and revisit it in the morning.

It is important to reference my layout time frame for this build.  I'm modeling the late 1940's early 1950's so I don't want the mill to look like it hasn't been maintained. In Bob's instructions he is modeling something that is more run down.

After looking at these photographs for awhile. I'm going to take another run at the tar paper roofing with a darker grey chalk. I'm getting to much contrast between the light and the dark in the photographs.

John,

First of all, as you know, photos can lie when it comes to colors.  What the viewer sees and what the camera sees can be dramatically different.  I personally would be more concerned with how it looked to my eye than how the camera recorded it.  My suggestion would be to add another color or colors to the paper roofing, maybe a dark green or dark brown and work that in randomly.  I will be interested to see what approach you decide to take, as well as the final result.

John,

First, let me say that those two structures are going to look awesome on the layout. My concern would be how to transfer the size and weight of the large diorama to the layout without breaking anything.

Secondly, I agree with Jerry. I don't believe you need more grey on the roofs. Blending in some browns and/or green will change the look.

Also, I finish my models to please my layout lighting and my eyes, not the final look in the camera.

FWIW, I also like the look of the roof. Even as light as it shows in the photo, I think it's a nice, faded appearance. Again, FWIW.

Thank you for the kind words and words of encouragement. I did a little more work on the roof and decided I like the way it looks so any changes will wait until the diorama is in place on the layout.

The structure is glued in place along with the lower part of the building.  I have all of the smaller pieces to the structures on the workbench - partially assembled.

John real nice.  I think the roof will look just finr when you get it set in place.

John,

Comparing the two photos I think the roof looks better in the second.  I agree with the other comments, go with it.

Thank you for the kind words. I think my issue was with the camera and not how the weathering looks to my eye. The iPhone cameras have a tendency to enhance the contrast making lighter colors look lighter and darker look darker in a photograph. In the past the problem goes away when I get out my SLR camera. We are moving on.
