Time to add more detail to the river area. I'm using Mod Podge, by Plaid. I got this at Sam Flax but have seen it at Hobby Lobby as well.

It has a consistency of liquid dish soap. It goes on milky white and dries clear.

There was a brief discussion on Cuse's thread about bubbles in Mod Podge when applied. I didn't have this issue but did a little experimentation this afternoon.

I used a small 1" soft bristle brush to apply the Mod Podge straight from the Bottle. When taking my time and keeping the brush at a slight angle, no bubbles. When I rushed and/or "stippled" on the Mod Podge, I got a few small bubbles. The faster I went the larger the bubbles.

So, TAKE YOUR TIME!

I started on the east side of the river. I applied a light layer first.

I moved further west as I went.

I placed the barge in the river and worked the MP around the sides and front. I'll make a more defined water flow around the barge as I build up the layers.

This next photo is about two hours after applying the MP. You can see it dries clear.

During the break I got started on the MP again.

I cut a very rough outline of the bottom of the tug. I didn't think to do this with the barge. i set the styrene outline in the river and let the MP hold it in place. When dry, I'll paint it flat black.

I then finished the MP in the river area.

The tug was placed on top of the rough cut outline. This way I can retrieve the tug later and it won't be glued to the river.

I have an area on the layout just south of the river that needs a structure. I left it open for the past several months while I thought about what to put here.

I have a structure that will be a perfect fit. It's scratch build I built some 15 years ago.

I'll leave it here and as the Judge says, To Be Continued!

The layout is looking better and better, beautiful work.  Thank you for the explanation of your technique for applying MP. I need to protect my technique to get a bubble free surface.

Very Nice work on the river. Personnaly, I use Golden Medium acrylic soft gel. perfec to make wave... less useful for river, and second disadavantage, this stock is very static, so the dust glue on it when dry, so must be varnish, and the last time I've make bubbles with the varnish. I will try your technic next time, and probably the MP too.

Looking good, Tom.

The water came out well.  I'm looking forward to a shot when it has all set.  Waiting to see your new structure...

Cheers, Mark.

Tom, I still have that "Judge's Quarters" building for you if you want it.

John,

Thank you for stopping by and for the very nice compliment on the layout, much appreciated. I think the MP can look really good if done slowly and in layers.

Eric,

Thank you for the kind words. I have some of the Golden acrylic soft gel. I may try it for making the waves from the tug and barge. However, the draw back is the duct gluing to the gel.

Mark, Cheers,

Thank you, it was a fun little job, well not really little, but fun none the less. I'll go over the new structure later this evening.

Dave,

I forgot what it looks like, sorry. I just sent you a PM for more details.
