Tom,

I can hardly wait to see the layout. There is so much more than when we were there in Sep 2017.

Marty,

Hard to believe it has been two years since you and Kelsie were here. Looking forward to the visit. See you and your wife on 31st.

There have been many new items and additions since your last visit.

Thanks for the tutorial on laying cork. I always learn something when I stop in to visit this thread. I don't care how long you have been in the hobby you can always learn and improve. Thanks again for taking the time to make this forum a great place.

John,

You are very welcome my friend. I learn from this forum as well. Lots of good stuff here.

Thank you for the support and kind words.

Larry,

Cork subroadbed is critical in all scales especially in N and HO scales.

Starting on page 9 and going through page 10 of this thread, I actually did a cork turnout installation.

http://www.modelersforum.com/index.php?topic=3848.120

Review those pages and see if that is what you need. If not, the next cork turnout I install will be the same. Let me know.

The method I use is the same one Lynn Armstrong taught back in the 60's.

How quickly I forget.  Even commented on that presentation then (October 16)

I wish I had carefully read that stuff before I started laying the homabed for my track.

On a related note, I've been talking to Mike Rose about why I got those kinks, and he suggests a dehumidifier would be in order.  Apparently Homabed is particularly sensitive to humidity (absorbs it like a sponge.)  My basement is dry, but any below-ground structure will collect humidity.  So I've been doing some on-line research.  Guess the money I might have used for a Proxxon chop saw will get retargeted to the dehumidifier.

Mark,

Thank you for stopping by and posting a comment on the Ovalix, much appreciated. Greg DeMayo is the hero here for the design.

Larry,

No problem. I'll be doing more turnouts using cork next week. I'll do one with much more detail. The one I did on pages 9-10 was a quickie post for a "how to".

Dave,

Thanks for comment and for following along.

Homosote/Homabed does indeed soak up moisture. I had an issue with moisture in the past and used a dehumidifier as well. Since I no longer use any paper product for subroadbed, I haven't experienced and problems.

I continued with the cork roadbed around the south end of the Ovalix. This section of straight track will be part of the mainline and the long passenger trains will use it to back onto the third level island and into the station.

The passenger trains will back across a #8 turnout and on a 52 inch radius track. The large radius will make backing the long passenger trains much easier.

The black line in the center is the 52 inch radius compared to the 36 inch radius track in the top of the photo.

More in a few.

I used a section of Masonite to measure the 52" radius curve. I measured 52 inches from one end and drilled a hole at the 52" mark. This was my pivot point.

I held a black Sharpie at the end and drew the radius.

Once the cork was laid in this area, it was time to smooth the edges and top.

I used some medium (course) sandpaper to smooth the edges and top. I then used some #50 grit sandpaper to finish the job.

Vacuuming the mess was next.

Laying some track was next.

I'll have more to add later this weekend.
