Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm very happy to finally be starting the 2019 Tom Schwarz build challenge. I never met him but from what I've read on the forum, I missed meeting a great person.

I've also been very excited to start the challenge and to be building one of Darryl Jacob's wonderful kits.

www.interactionhobbies.com

This will be a new experience for me in building a structure out of RIB material, Resin Impregnated Board. This kit is about 95% all RIB. This will be fun as I see how this kit will look when finished and have set aside some real estate for the new Gulf Gas Station in South Tahope.

I chose the Gulf logo as I used Gulf as a teenager when gas was .19 a gallon. Also, Gulf's colors were/are Blue and Orange - Florida Gator colors.

I read the instruction sheet twice and referred to the parts during that process. This helped to identify wall parts.

Darryl also mentioned in the kit instructions one could go to the web site and print the instructions where the photos are in color. I did this and it made a very big difference in identifying parts as well.

You may be confused as to my reference to identifying parts. The walls are made up of three separate pieces/layers - three layers making one wall section. They are similar, yet different so the correct identification is critical. If you build this kit, print out the colored instruction sheets, this makes it very clear and is a big help.

I'm on board!

Dave,

I'm honored to have you on board. I'm already having fun on this build.

I identified the exterior/outside walls. They all have tabs on the bottom that fit into slots in the base.

I located these walls, removed them from the main carrier sheets and test fit them in the slots.

Each of the four walls fit perfectly with no cutting/adjustments necessary.

I located one interior wall and placed it in the slots as well.

The office has a back wall that fits in place. I couldn't find that wall part and was going to notify Darryl of the missing part.

In the mean time I made one out of cardboard. Per Murphy's Law, after making the cardboard wall, I identified/found the missing wall. It was between the original B&W pages of the instruction sheet.

More later this afternoon.

Count me in as well.  This looks like fun!   ;)

Bob,

Thanks for tagging along on the build.  I told Greg my back was sore from taking down all the Christmas lights, etc. and was going to lay down. That was three hours ago and the back is fine now. I'm having fun on this one.

Since this is a 1950's gas station, I won't have to do much, if any, weathering. The Atlantic and Southern RR is set in the early 1950's. This gas station kit made perfect sense to build.

Also, I remember the Gulf stations being bright white with blue and orange trim.

For the exterior walls, I chose a gloss white by Ace Hardware.

The exterior walls pieces and some interior wall pieces were placed on a sheet of cardboard. I used double sided tape to hold them in place.

I sprayed one light coat of the gloss white on the wall sections. I didn't want to spray the paint to thick so two coats made sense.

Here is how they look with one coat.

Here is how the walls look after two coats of the gloss white was applied.

I really like the Ace rattle can paints, the gloss dries very smooth and can be handled after 30-45 minutes.

Time for a little football. Back later this afternoon.

For the blue trim color, I chose Floquil Dark Blue. When painted on the garage bay door frame, it was to dark.

I mixed 70% Floquil Dark Blue to 30% Reefer White to get the Gulf blue color.

In the photo below, you can see the dark blue on the left, definitely to dark. When placed next to the gloss white walls, it looked black.

Referring to the photo above, that door piece is actually an interior garage door frame. This piece should have been painted silver.

I used Tamiya Silver to paint over the blue for the silver door frame. The correct (outer) door frame was then painted with the blue.

According to Darryl, Tamiya Flat Blue is also a very good match for the blue.

The door frames shown on the right in the above photo, fits over the frames on the left. I glued them together.

Finished for today.

Before you paint the resin ( Laser) Board do wipe it down with Alcohol to remove any oils from the manufacturing process. I find the .024 brown has way more then the  .015 ivory board.
