RailroadKits Gas 'n Go

So, it's been awhile I could show any real progress.

For most kits, I take a 5x8 note card and draw the roof pitch.  It aids in frieze and verge board cutting and rafter tail angles.  I use a 1x2x3 block as a stop and an old single edge razor blade holder to cut the material.  Although I had previously drawn out the rafter tail spacing, I use the Rusty Stump joist jig to double check placement and spacing.

I still haven't gotten the whole scenery glue thing down.  I think I need to switch to Elmers Wood Glue as opposed to Elmers Glue All.  The darker "tracks" were accentuated after an overs pray of my 50/50 Elmers/water mix.  I had lightly brushed on some dust weathering powder which really didn't show up, other than to loosen some of the gravel material.  Hence, the over spray.
Once the glue has set, I can take the board to the workbench and install the front porch pillars and pumps.  Well, I need to add some static grass first to the dirt areas.  I bought a Peco static grass applicator and really want to play with it.

While waiting for all this glue to dry, I got a head start on a falling down supply company kit.

hey Bob:

It's coming along very nicely. Love your colors.

Thanks Karl.

So, I played around with the static grass.  And meh.  Obviously I'm doing something wrong as I get more long stuck together strands of static grass and what grass does stick, most of it lays down.

This was a good place to futz with something new.  I'll play around with clumps on wax paper and see how that works.

I need to weather the roof a bit, get the gas island glued on, and add the pumps.

What kind of grass machine do you use Bob? And is the battery fully charged?
I love photo's, don't we all.

It's a Peco PSG-1.  And yes, it has a brand new battery.

Looks great , I look forward to how you do your weathering and I like your setup for cutting stripwood.
Years ago I came across an electric flyswatter thing that was the poor mans static grass tool which I never did anything with it , but I did buy one at a hobby shop in Toronto and some of the grass to use for it, unfortunatelly I tore down that layout and started a new one so I'm not at the static grass stage yet. Please do post what you figure out.

Wow , really shouldn't look like that, did you make sure it was grounded well. The PECO is good enough , it should shoot the grass into the glue or paint whatever you used . I usually use tan colored acrylic paint , the type you use for walls , brush it on a bit thick and then while still wet shoot the grass , I use a RTS Greenkeeper 35Kv, more voltage better grass , but like I said the Peco is more then good enough.

I use a big T-pin.  I watched several Peco how-tos on YouTube and they didn't even ground theirs.  They just got it close.  I brushed on a 50/50 mix of glue/water, let it sit while I loaded the hopper.  Today I used an over spray glue from WWS figuring that it might be better.  Nope sameo sameo, but it did allow me to add some ground foam on my bushes and in the flat grass area.  I just need to fiddle with this more.

Maybe too close , so that the grass doesn't get the chance to shoot out straight.  This is what mine looks like , using 3 colors in 2 different lengths.

Jan, it could be that I'm too close.  Especially since mine doesn't even close to yours.

I added a couple of J L Innovative Design gas pumps.  I just couldn't get paint to work on the kits' Art Deco pumps.  They really look great.

Added two chimneys.  I just need to add the tar around the brick/roof area.  At this point the building isn't glued down.  I'll wait until it get planed in the layout as additional scenery needs to be added.  It needs a wood fence around the parking lot.  So basically it is finished.

Bob, really nice job on this kit.  The color scheme is classic and works well. Very pleasing design--a gem.
