A very interesting kit Craig.....looking forward to seeing your build.  :)

I have enjoyed this thread with all the great builds and I just went back thru to find out what you will be doing with them, but couldn't find anything about that other than at pg. 1 where you indicated you liked this area of George's layout. I am assuming that you plan on putting them together in one big scene, but is this part of a larger layout or only a stand alone diorama?

Thanks Greg! Your ears must've been burning as just last night I was putting together the base of the overall diorama so I could get an idea of the footprint size!

Essentially, I am taking the entire Rocky Point Harbor and recreating it as a standalone diorama, the harbor included. I currently do not have a layout, but when I do this diorama will be stitched in.

Forgive the ugly floor photo, at 35 x 26 inches she just won't fit on the bench -- and something I have to take into account when I'll be doing all my ground cover!

The base is made up of a few cuts of pink foam and polystyrene, but all will be glued to a large, single sheet of white foam board.

For the diorama, I will have lots of room for the track leading up to Emporium Seafood as well as the track that curves around the back of the other buildings. For the retaining walls I am using the walls from Cartwright's Machine Shop kit and have cut and used foam to match the exact height of them. I will cast more to complete the entire harbor scene.

Once all the structures are complete (Emporium, Union Dredging Building, Small Office to go) I will then move on to all the scenery. A process I am very much looking forward to.

Hey Craig:

Wowwie that really looks just great. Do you have the same boat that George used in the harbor? I believe it is the PYRO Skipjack.

Thanks so much Karl! I didn't know of the PYRO model, so I actually bought CCK's Skipjack! I may have to pick up the PYRO model if George used the same one — it is fantastic looking.

Hey Craig:

Looked up CCK's Skipjack. Not exactly the same but it will do just fine. I don't think you will be able to get the PYRO model.

How long did it take you to do the hole and the detail the coloring is fantastic!!  Oh I see that's not part of the diorama!! :)

The real diorama looks great right out of the gate.

Haha, Jerry! I've been working on my 1:1 diorama for some years now ;)

Craig,

Nice job. Looks great.

Your use of a foam base as a diorama and then fitting it into the layout, which I've seen other members do, when that gets build has given me the incentive to try that also. I've been in a quandary on how to build a structure scene into the layout. This has given me the answer on how I'm going to install the rock crusher building scene.

Thanks, Bernd.

Building on a foam base first makes life a lot easier. Layouts locations can be difficult to get to and often single sided access. Modular fits just need a little TLC on its edges when stitching in.
