Quote from: Jim Donovan on July 29, 2025, 08:47:11 PMHi Tom;
It has been awhile since I checked in. Great tips on the caboose rebuilds. The airbrush still showed some paint after all you did to it, must have been really coated. I find if I don't keep mine shiny and clean it simply does not work. Results looked great.
Jim

Jim,
Welcome back and good to see you. The red on the airbrush is a reflection from my red shirt when I took the photo.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Tom
Gee, Tom, you know the consequences of wearing the red shirt, right?  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirt_(stock_character)  :P  (On my big project of the '00 decade, "Who has the Red Shirt for that presentation?" was how we tagged the person responsible for giving a briefing...)
dave
Dave,

I remember that Star Trek episode.

I attended an officer's retirement and was wearing a red shirt. Yepper, I got called on to give an impromptu speech.

I finished decaling the two cabooses. I didn't add any build dates or other data, just kept it simple.

After decaling I sprayed a flat finish on the A&S caboose.

I still need to paint the handrails yellow and add some black to the ladders.

I did the same for the A&S side door caboose, kept it simple as well. This one is now in revenue service.

In order to add the marker lights, I needed to drill two holes in the bottom of the floor plate. This will also become more clear later in the thread.

I used my Micro Mark MicroLux variable speed drill. I keep two metal drill bits for this occasion. The for drilling the floor is 1/4 inch. I'll cover the drill bit for the caboose markers later as well.

I likie to have the brass on a softer  surface so I use a small piece of 1X4. The brass bottom is placed on the wood and then the hole is drilled between the floor braces.

Once the holes are drilled, I use a slightly large bit and hand twist it over the drilled holes. This removes and brass burrs.

The base floor was cleaned in Acetone (outside to avoid any fumes).

When dried, I sprayed black with Scalecoat paint. I placed it in a baking pan and let the sun bake the paint.

I repeated the process with a flat finish. The red plate is the brass models builder. The importer was Overland Models.

The unpainted brass is where I held the piece to paint. This will be covered by the coupler pocket and won't be seen.

Done for today.

VERY NICE looking cabeese!

I usually put a piece of thin plywood (laser-cut kit sprues...) underneath stuff when I'm drilling.  I also use that stuff to construct little assembly jigs when gluing styrene.  (And I use cut-off pieces of styrene for jigs when assembling wood.)

Howdy Tom,

A man and his toys.  My wife is amazed at me having so many "tools", but you must have them to model on the periphery.  Nice work on the caboose.  It's a beaut!

Have fun,
mike

Rick

Tom, decals look good.
That's a real nice drill press you have there.

Jerry

Beautiful work Tom!  And a nice little drill press.

Larry,

Thanks very much. After these two are finished, I'll be done with all the brass caboose painting.

Dave,

I've used plywood in the past as well. The 1X gives me some drilling space. The jig idea is a great one.

Mike, Howdy,

Yes, toys and the man! Tools are just another aspect of enjoying this great hobby.

Thank you for the nice comment.

Tom, still having fun.
