I find hand laying track to be relaxing and one of my favourite part of the hobby.  I also been doing it for over 40 years.  (yipe  :o I think I'm getting old. :o )

Going to the left is not an option due to a shelf bracket that is used to support the layout.  Only option is enlarging the hole on the right, I just need to figure out how large the opening needs to be.

Thanks Curt,  The first model layout club I belonged to in my early 20's had all hand laid track and I first learned how to hand lay track and build turnouts there.
