Great stuff John and Tom!

Tom - those earlier photos are very interesting.

John - the boathouse is a favourite of mine.  Fantastic work you are doing!

Cheers, Mark.

Is that castle like structure from the old photos still on the layout?

I'm not sure which structure you are referencing but since Tom's timing on posting these pictures is perfect (since we are just getting into this area with our tour of the F&SM) I will make note of the structures that are still from the original 1986 version of the F&SM.

Here are four early structures George is getting ready for the F&SM.

John,

I had in mind one in the front in the first picture and on the right in the second.

Thanks for the clarification - I see some very familiar castings but I can't place this structure on the layout.  I will be looking for it. Can anyone else help?

I don't think its there anymore.  It used to live between the ' Catherine Ann's baked beans' and 'Charles Cooper and Co.' buildings in Dovertown.  In the book it is smack bang in the middle of the large picture on pages 62 and 63.

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks - it sure is and I don't remember seeing it in another location. Another question for George. George has sure made a lot of changes in this area over the years.

As we cross the Northfield River the first structures we come to are the Wolcott Meat Company.  This is one of George's FSM kits called Butcher's Way his Jewel Series kit number 11.

I was comparing some of the photos from 1987 to the present day photos John has been listing. The change over the years George has made is often quite drastic.

On page one of this thread John shows the bridge structure George scratch built from an article in the NG and SL Gazette. In the photos of 1987 you can see the tall building immediately behind the harbor wall are no longer there.

The change was for the better as you can see.

Thanks for posting these pictures - it is great to capture the history.  My understanding is that all the very tall buildings in Manchester were originally to provide a site block but then George opted for a more depth to the scene and removed them.

John,

I remember on one of the Allen Keller tapes George mentioned the tall structures were a view block. I do like the smaller ones better. It seems to give the F&SM even more character if that's possible.
