Happy Day to Karl and Mike.

Karl, your photo is quite similar to what we have in SE NH, almost 1500 miles away...  My new eyes are burning...  Wife (who has a very good sense of smell) says "I can definitely smell smoke."

Quote from: jbvb on July 14, 2026, 06:34:39 PMJim, are your pickle vats going in the sheds you mocked up with card and blue tape?  The only small-scale pickle works I ever saw close up was in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, next to the New Haven's 4 track elevated RoW from Back Bay towards Providence. I wish I'd expended a few shots on it, but I was on a budget in 1981. The tanks were in an open yard enclosed by an 8-10 foot high brick wall. No tops or shelter at all.
Good Morning Everyone;

Hot and muggy in Florida. Happy birthday to Mike and Karl. I enjoy my 71st trip around the sun this coming Sunday, they days go by fast.

James;

The building I am currently working on contains the raw materials needed for making the jar pickles including brine tanks, vinger tanks and all the supplies. The second floor has the pickle vats that are finishing up the pickling process and getting them ready to be packaged. Lots of warehouse doors for moving supplies and keeping acid smell down. There will be a rail siding in the back where pickle cars will be unloaded using early pump systems on a walkway. Like you said, in the real world there would be a bunch of large holding tanks for storage and pickling as well sitting outside. I will have just a couple on layout for show. Some of the older operations had no tops on their tanks since the brine would kill bacteria, however it did not keep insects out so they either screened the brine and rinsed the pickles before packaging, or...not. Heinz was the big boy in the business and they along with some others did cover their vats and worked hard to keep a clean work place. The two saw tooth buildings next to this building will be the packing stations which is why the design to allow fresh air and light into the area. The small square building will be the office. I am attempting to build in such a way the outer 'shells' of the buildings can be removed so you see a complete interior since it was the construction inside that was unique to pickle factories. Lot's of support beams, wood roofs covered with tar paper then corrugated roofing due to the moisture, salt and acid. I have attached a couple photo's so you can see.

Good morning everyone,

Thanks for the coffee and breakfast Larry.

Happy birthday Karl and Mike.

Current temperature is 22c (72f) and overcast with thunderstorms predicted for later today, same forecast as yesterday except that the thunderstorms didn't arrive till last night.

Didn't make it downstairs last night so nothing got done on the layout.  We shall see what tonight brings.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning everyone.

54 in Salida, sun and clouds with a chance of PM rain with a high of 79.

Coffee, sodas and OJ are ready.
Blueberry pancakes with real Vermont maple syrup and freshly churned butter from Wisconsin for breakfast today.
Sides of crispy bacon and sausage patties are out too.

Jerry, glad you had a good time with your son.

Ron, how's Gracie?

Jim, that's some great modeling.

Mike, hope getting a new passport goes easy.

Karl, how was the birthday dinner?

Philip, I saw the bison video and this time it wasn't the humans fault.

Curt, sounds like good progress is being made on the kit.

ACLTom, how are you?

Dave and James, anything going on in New England?

How's everyone else.

A very lazy day here yesterday.
Gym this morning.
A little bit of grocery shopping too.
I'll research for the next hike to do tomorrow.

Good Morning All,

Thanks for opening and breakfast Rick. Another beautiful landscape.

Started off slow today after 4 trips to the bathroom last night to pee. :-* After chores I hope to make it to the workbench. MOH is getting ready to leave for the weekend in SC with her BFF.

Nothing much planned through the weekend. Son (the chef) is off today so I told him he's cooking supper tonight! ;D Personally I hate cooking and would rather do the dishes.

Jim your pickle works looks outstanding.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Good morning, Rick, Curt and later arrivals. The NH Seacoast got down to the 60s last night, sunny today with a high in the 80s (phone) or low 90s (NWS) forecast later. No Canadian wildfire smoke at the moment, but I seem to be coughing up some of yesterday's.  Off to the Trolley Museum again today & tomorrow: Yesterday I got the two joints we've been working on into decent shape. I expect we'll make some progress on supporting them today.

We got some fresh air last night, as James said, but the Canadian smoke will build up again today.  At least today the sky was blue, not pale orange.

Rick, the one time I got my lazy ass out of bed to watch a sunrise over the mountains, the weather didn't fully cooperate.  It was still kinda cool to see, even with the clouds: clouds over Mt Rainier (from the film days)

Curt, I definitely sympathize with multiple nocturnal trips to the bathroom.  The urologist doubled my dose of the 'flowmax' drug, that is helping.  I see my primary care guy today, and I peeked at the test results.  My A1C is down, so I won't get yelled at as much as I usually do.  ::)

For scenery, I've been applying Sculptamold over the plaster wrap.  To tint that, I mix in a 50-50 mix of "dirt" colored paint and white glue, along with water to get the Scupltamold to the right consistency.  This makes for a stronger mix, but it's also harder to drill to plant trees.  So I ordered a cheapo pen 'engraver', we'll see how that works once it arrives and charges up.

Good Morning,

Rick thanks for the coffee and breakfast. have fun researching and what beautiful sunrise.

Happy belated Birthday to Karl and Mike; hope you both enjoyed your days.

Jim some great modeling going on there. Happy Birthday to you as well and enjoy your Sunday. My Dad used to tell me the older you get the faster time seems to fly by....I think he was on to something.

James hope all goes well at the Trolley Museum.

Dave hope the Doc's visit goes well for you.

What's everyone else doing.

It's a sunny 72 with a high of 83. Yesterday the Canadian smoke was horrible; gave the ground almost an orange color and the sun looked more like the moon when you look at it. Much better today so hopefully the smoke will go back home where it belongs. Don't understand while Canada is STILL have wild fires. Maybe some bench time later on.

Have an enjoyable and safe dat ahead. Be well and stay safe.

Good morning folks,

Rick, thanks for opening, coffee, and breakfast. Good luck with your hike quest.

Curt, safe travels to your wife.  Hope you enjoy your free time.

James, good luck supporting the joints.

Dave, good luck with the pen engraver.

Larry, wishing you an enjoyable time at the bench.

How is the rest of the crew?

Thank you for the birthday wishes. We celebrated with a wonderful birthday meal at a local mom-and-pop restaurant, Frank's Family Restaurant. I had a grilled seafood platter in a scampi sauce.  It was fantastic.

First thing this morning, I took Sharon for her final cataract surgery.  We were headed home in 1.25 minutes.  They are so efficient.

This afternoon I'm taking my Sister to the Atlanta airport for a trip to Copenhagen and a Scandinavian cruise.  We are pet sitting her hounds.

Have fun,
mike

Good Morning Folks;

Mike I'd rather be the one going on the cruise.

Thanks everyone on the comments for the pickle factory, I am not sure what I enjoy more building it or learning how folks made things work in 1900 like making pickles. For example the corrosion was non-stop so their solution was to make the main pipes out of wood!

Rick love the trail pictures, amazing. I saw the video of the grandfather being thrown by the bison too, he is lucky to be alive. One of those cases of being at the wrong place at wrong time. He did well to protect the grandchild. I've been to Yellowstone area many times and have been even closer to a Bison by accident (came around the corner of a cabin and there he was). They are great to watch from a distance, up close not so much.

ACL Tom is hurting so prayers for him and his wife as he now deals with eye surgery. Tom you are having a year.

Today I have repair men coming to fix appliances and some bench time I hope. Everyone have a great day.

Good Thursday morning to all. Heading to 90 this afternoon and it's ugly out. Smoke haze and particulates in the air from Alberta and Minnesota fires. A nice breeze directly from the east so how in the heck are we getting the smoke and smell?

Went to Google Gemini and even though the fires are northwest of my part of Wisconsin it's the jet stream. The smoke and particulates are caught in the jet stream bringing it over my neighborhood. The heat dome is then capturing the smoke forcing it out of the jet stream. Oh well! What this reminds of because this has been much thicker than the smoke a couple years ago is of Chicago smog in the 60's. I used to caddy and there were days it was so thick the golfers were wondering how the balls could travel through it. Stupid very wealthy people!

Movers are moving at 9 and say it will be complete by noon. I've been banished this afternoon as the girls, Terry, daughter and granddaughter will handle the kitchen. I'm worried about Terry's COPD kicking in. She will wear a mask outside today as a just in case measure! I was thinking of taking the grandson to the driving range last night but the daughter said no he is grounded and there is no pool or outside visitors today or Friday for him! I texted him last night after dinner but his mom replied she had his phone and will for today and tomorrow. He'll tell me in a few days what he did... Had to be a good one!

Happy belated birthdays to Karl and Mike!

The son said Austin was ok yesterday where his g/f place is with no flooding yet! His place in Wimberley though is basically an island. Many of the creeks are crossing the roads to his place so he can't get there.  His 1/4 section of property is high enough above the Blanco River that where the buildings are is safe. The lowlands near the river he figures are flooded.

The daughter asked me if I wanted some space for a layout! Told her not at this time but I might build something small above my bench in her shop space. She's was fine with that when I moved my bench in a few weeks ago. I just haven't done it.

At dinner yesterday Terry and I got the lecture from the daughter and hubby that there really is no reason to build a new house. The space attached to her shop/office and above the stables was built with us in mind. That is why the elevator was installed when built. For almost 47 of the 50 years we are married come September I have had a space of my own to go to. Usually a finished basement or small office. Since our 1st stick built house in 1979 Terry has had an office of her own. We'll see how this goes for a few months as while we finally agreed on some essentials for a new house there are no sketches to take to the architect. There is no me space for either of us here but there is plenty of overall space.

I'm not a sentimental guy but yesterday I posted pictures of a small 4 car train on the layout above the now gone layout on my Facebook page. It's one of 3 modular scenes I kept from the layout. I'm not telling my fb followers we moved. I walked in the now empty layout room last night and did feel a moment of regret!

Be well, stay cool and dry
TomO
