Ain't that the truth? :D
A classic FSM kit + Karl at the bench = a wonderful build! I'll be following along for sure! ;D
It doesn't get any better than this - a classic FSM kit and Karl is building it. I will be along for the ride. We should have a side bet on the color scheme that Karl will use - he does have the eye for it.
Karl,
Since I haven't built this one as yet you know I'll be following along. This is another one of George's great kits.
Tom ;D
Looks like a good challenge for you Karl.....I'll be watching. :)
I'm following as well .....

Hi Frank B., Bob B., John S., Tom l., And Greg:
Thanks for the interest in this build. This looks like a pretty tough complicated kit. I will try to do my best with it. Glad to have you all following along.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's a photo of the parts for building A & B Along with its windows and doors.
Karl
Hi Guys:

Hi Jan:
WOW!!! I'm flattered. Tanks.
Karl
Hi Karl,
Can you go over your technique for painting the metal doors/windows when you get to that point? I would appreciate it!
thanks!
Bob C.
Hi Bob C:
1) It's pretty simple. Paint the doors and windows the color of choice and allow to dry.
2) Add A&I Wash and allow to dry.
3) Dry-Brush with white or light gray.
4) Add glass to windows. I use Gallery Glass. Then The Shades.
Thats about it.
Karl
Hi Guys:
I finished one of the walls to see how it would look. It is painted with Krylon Camouflage #4295 Sand. Almost A perfect match for Floquil Earth. Then A&I wash followed by dry-brushing with Apple Barrel #20526 Country Grey.
Here's A photo let me know how it looks OK.
Karl
Hi Guys:
I will be changing the name of Rollin Saywer to Keasbey & Mattison Co. using sign made for me by my friend Frank Bernard. Here's how they will look.
This company no longer exists. The sing info came from a 1942 letterhead collected by my Father.
Karl
The wall looks good, Karl. I have this kit in the stash as well. I got it on ebay years ago. I put in what I thought was a low bid just to follow the auction to see how high the price would go, and ended up winning the kit. ;D
Jeff
Hi Jeff:
thanks. Glad to hear you have one. Here's a photo of the walls three are finished and one is unweathered so you can see the difference.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Finally got the 4 walls for the main building assembled. It was quite a bit of work as this is not a laser cut kit. Castings and sign have been added. here's A photo.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good so far. Keep up the great work.
Frank
Very nice Karl .... love the loading dock bumpers...
Hi Donato:
Thanks appreciate it. That's just one o the loading dock bumpers. There are several different ones in the kit.
Karl
Hi Guys:
main roof is shingle on and glued in place. These are Campbell shingles. It is important to get the rows striaght or the roof tends to look bad. Rafters and Rafter Tails are next.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Been working most of the day. Lots more castings added to the main building. Roofs are in place A&I wash added and dry-brushed with gray. I deviated from the instructions. Instead of building C next which is on the right I decided to build building E. It goes on the platform in the photos. Roof details were also added.
Karl
Karl, you are a model making machine. Looks really good.
Hi Martin:
Thanks for the compliment appreciated as always.

Hope you got a bunch of spare parts for that machine!!!! ;D
Hi Donato:
If you saw the parts and detail castings I have you'd probably have a fit.
Karl
Hi Kart,
You're making great progress on this one. I love the colors of, well, everything. They come together perfectly.
Hi Bob:
Thanks for the compliment. Been working on building E. Thought it would be a simple easy job. However it has an interior and removable roof along with over 20 castings including windows and doors. her's a so far pic.,
karl
Hi Guys:
I finished Building E. It was a fair amount of work due to the castings involved. Has an interior and removable roof. Here's a few photos.
Karl
It looks great Karl!
Love the detail castings.
Karl,
Wonderful build, looks great of course. Very well done.
Tom ;D
Hi John and Tom:

Karl
Hi guys:
At Frank B's suggestion I added 45 degree bracing on the canopy posts.
Karl
Karl,
Awesome! You are truly a Master Craftsman's Builder. Fantastic brother! Thanx Thom...
Karl,
Glad you liked my suggestion of the angle braces. Looks much more finished.
Frank
Hi Thom:

Karl
Hi Frank:

Karl
Hi tom:

Karl
Hi guys:
Got a little more work done this evening. The light gray spot on the roof cyclone will be touched up. I ain't dry yet.
Karl
Great job on the pigeons! (And the rest of the structure isn't bad, either ;) )
dave
Hi David:
Thanks for the compliment. appreciate it. Yeah those pigeons are tough.
Karl
Karl,
The two pounds of George's castings added to that wooden structure really make a statement ! ;)
Hi Tom:
Yeah that thing probably weighs about 4 lbs at this point. Just finished up building D on the far right end. I think I will put the water tank on the rear roof of the main large building next. Here's the latest photos.

Karl the Great, just a name from European history.
Hi Jan:
Thanks very much appreciated.
Karl
Hi guys:
The main building is finished as far as I can go without adding it to the base. The water tank is added. here's the changes I made. Tank bands are paper (3M tape on back) instead of thread provided in the kit. Nut bolt washer castings were added by me. Water is installed. It is 5 minute epoxy.
Here's a few photos.
Karl
Karl
This is really looking nice - this is one of the FSM kits that I don't have >:( I may have to do some shopping.
Hi John:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Karl What a beautiful build thank you for all of the pictures.
Hi Jan,Erin and andrew:
Thanks for the compliment. This build will be going on the shelf for a few days while I build FOS Scales Darnell's autobody. I will be going to the same friend I'm building this kit for.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Just finished Darnell's Autobody. I'm back to building Rollin Saywer.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Been working today. Decided to add some extra signage to the kit.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Better photo.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good.
Frank
Good to see you back on this one - I'm looking forward to watching which direction you go with this one.
Hi Guys:
Here's a progress photo. This is the tower building. It has a shed on the left side that is next. Then on to the conveyor that goes between the tower and main building.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here's a progress shot . working on the last building. Then on to the conveyor.
Karl
Hi Guys:
All the buildings are finished. On to the conveyor belt.
Karl
Thumbs up!

Hi Eric & John S:
Thanks for the compliment. I'm working on it. Cut the base yesterday.
Karl
Karl,
Well done, looks perfectly wonderful.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks appreciate your comment as always.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Building is glued to base. Track is installed along with the rear canopy and scenery on that part.
Karl
Karl,
Your workmanship make us see the light. :)
What color green did you use on this construction to make the tar paper roofing material ?
Tom
Hi Tom:
Thanks for the wonderful compliment. That is Model Master's SAC Bomber Green on the rolled roofing.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the scenery on the rear of the diorama except for the tree.
Karl
Looks great Karl. Another gem! :D
That's a big well done Karl..... 8) 8) 8)

Hi Bob & Greg:
thanks for the compliments. It doesn't look like that anymore. I took it off the base as it warped on me. Going to put it on plywood.
Karl
Karl
What did you use that warped?
Hi John:
black chip Board 1/2" thick.
Karl
Hi All:
Kit has been removed from old base and put on a new 1/2" plywood base. 2 photos before and after.
Karl
Karl,
Beautiful build Karl. I believe the plywood base is always best. I've even seen Gator Board warp although it is said it won't. :'(
Tom ;D
Karl
Thanks for the update. I have always used 3/4 inch plywood but have been playing with the idea of going to the foam board. I used the pink foam 1 inch thick for the Brambell's build.
Hi Tom & john:
Thanks for the compliments. Was having problems building the chain link fence as I don't solder. Gluing just doesn't work. So here's what I did.
I'm using the concrete base from the kit with Central Valley Wood fencing on the top. This is prototype. It's called wood fencing on concrete retaining walls. Looked it up on Google. Also added advertising along the front. Fence is about half done. Waiting for more to arrive from Central Valley. Here's A Photo.

The wood fencing looks more "in place" for this model. Chain link, in my opinion, is too cold looking. Wood has more character. WELL DONE!!!
Hi Donato:
Thank for the compliment. I like the wood better also.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Just finished up the rest of the castings. painted, A&I wash and dry-brushed with gray.
Here's a photo.
karl
Karl,
Nice tip with the fence on the concrete wall. I've never thought of it although I've seen it with the chain link fence.
Very well done. I like the look.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked the fence.
Karl
Hi All:
All The casting are on the model except for the telephone pole. Threw a few FOS Scale background kits in for fun. Here's a photo. Hope you like it.
Karl
Splendid ;D ;D ;D
The energizer bunny does it again. Very nice work Karl
Wonderful work Karl!
Atta boy Karl..... 8)
Hi Jan, Steve, Donato And Greg:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated as always. New fence arrived yesterday from Central Valley. It's almost done.
Karl
Karl
It looks great - Love the fence. I tried using glue for the chain link fence on my Brambell's build - it don't work. I went back and soldiered it and it work fine. Every time I use super glue I like it less. I'm back using epoxies and soldiering for everything that is not wood.
Hi John:
Thanks for the compliment. I just don't solder. never have. So I was afraid to try it. maybe I will sometime in the future. I finished the fence today except for the gates. Will build them tomorrow hopefully.

All you need now is a diminutive Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer......

Hi Donato:
All I need to do if find them.
karl
Karl, another outstanding model. I hope you bring it to the Expo.
I still use ½" Gator board for bases for larger dioramas, but I always laminate it with a second layer of Gator board and/or a layer of ½" pink insulation foam. I found out the hard way that Gator board can warp as Tom Langford says. I have to admit I subjected it to a lot of water applying scenic materials. Now I laminate and am more judicious with the water and substitute 91 or 100% rubbing alcohol for my "wet" water. The ½" plywood is just too heavy for all the moving around of these things that I do. Not only that I can easily warp plywood as well.
I considered myself very soldering challenged until a few weeks ago, but I have done quite a bit of it lately building some turnouts and other track work using Fastracks jigs and templates for an NMRA project. It is quite fun, but as usual by the time I started to get a little bit proficient the project was over. At least now I can solder a little bit without burning my hands, clothing, parts of the model, and the kitchen counter.
At any rate nothing can beat your wooden fence. Why don't you try hand carving the Tom and Huck figures? Or can't you just send the photo to one of those 3-D printers and have them crank out a couple in HO?
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the compliments and all the advice.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi All:
here's a finished photo of the Rollin Saywer diorama.
Karl
Karl.....
That is just wonderful work .... you can build structures for me any day....
Hi Donato:
Thanks appreciate your complinment as always.
karl
That came together nicely! One problem about having a layout that isn't going anywhere is that I never seem to get beyond 'completing a building' to 'completing a scene.'
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
