All,
Thought I start a list of who's going to EXPO this year.
Are we going to have another Forum get together aka party
😞 Missing Spring Break by a week. 👿
Bob, Are you sure you can break away from the water slide long enough to be at the get together? ;D
I'll be there. Looking forward to my trip to baaasstoon. Thats how Groovy said I had to say it.
I will be going again this year. See you all there.
I booked my trip this week. Counting the days :)
John
I am planning on it. Dustin, email me with a good time to call and we can coordinate arrival times and how to circle the streets of Boston on the MTA trying to find Peebbiddee.
Robert, I would like to set-up a Forum meet and greet similar to what we have done in past years. I will get the hotel to set-up a cash bar if you tell me what would be the best 2 or 3 hour time frame. I think we typically have done this on the Friday evening of the Expo, and some of the evening clinic presenters and attendees were a little late for our party.
This is a non-Expo function and is at no cost other than sodas and drinks you buy at the cash bar. We usually arrange for no-host pizzas, appetizers, etc. I'll start a separate thread in a few weeks.
I think I'll be passing on this years event. :(
I hope you all have fun and come home with a bunch of goodies. :D
Oh, I'll be there...
Hal
Jeeesh... I don't know... Between the the traffic on Route 95 and traffic lights, it could take me like 15 or 20 minutes to get there... :P
I'm going! I know you all care.
Seriously... Check out that super limited edition F&SM EXPO box car! Have your car signed by George while you visit his layout... Only at THE 2016 FSMRE!
I'm planning on joining the party. Saving up my EXPO bucks!
Sorry I won't be able to make it. Extended travel is just to physically difficult for me. Certainly had a great time in Scranton. Y'all need to come to Virginia. Jim
I will be there!!
I had originally envisioned going to Springfield, the EXPO and the Narrow Gauge convention in Maine this year as my daughter lives in Beantown. My children thought as my wife and I are celebrating our 60th birthdays this year and our 35th anniversary, we should take a family vacation and go to Hawaii. None of them, however, offered to pay for it, so I'll be hoofing the cost for 7 people going there in February. That'll take my travel budget for the year. And maybe next year. ::)

I am so jealous. One of these days I will attend the Expo , sooner if it is organized in summer or fall.
Does anyone know the price of that car?

We'll be there !!
It's gonna take me maybe 40 minutes to drive down, so yep, I'm registered. But I can't go to the banquet, I have to get ready for the Hub Division spring meet in Waltham, MA on Sunday the 3rd.
Count me in! Looking forward to what I'm sure will be a great Expo!
Bob C.
I guess I'll be square. Can't make it this year.
Tom :'(
Doesn't look like Diane and I will be able to make this year either.
Always next year. I'm sure you guys will have a good time.

I will be in Florida for most of March, but I'm going to cut my vacation time by 3 days just so I can make it. Therefor I'll be looking forward in seeing you all there.

so, if you use the hotel link on the Expo site with the Expo discount code for the hotel room, its $250 a night.... I went to Priceline and booked a room for $136 a night--- just in case anyone wants to know....
See you guys there!

...oops, I meant to post about that too....when I called to get my room, they had never heard of the EXPO, and the rates were $250. +. Only until I told her I would find something else, she found me rooms at $133.....so be sure to be persistent on the "EXPO rate".....

Must be your accent. :P :P
I'll call the hotel tomorrow and have them add more rooms to the Expo block...
Hal
Okay boys and girls,
Hotel said there are still rooms to be had at the show rate. I don't know what you guys are doing wrong, but if you still have a problem email me or Mr. Seckler and will will connect you to the lady at the hotel who will make it happen!
Hal
Karen and I plan to be there.
Question: I have a friend that wants to come to see George's layout, but I am concerned whether can handle the trip. He is in his 80's and has to use a walker/cane to get around. What is the access to that layout as I understand it is on the second floor? Are there stairs? How many? Any information would be helpful so i can set expectations.
Thanks.
I'm thinking the hotel added the room with that rate after they hung up the phone with you, because the linked page is much different than what it was a few days ago. I got the low rate on Priceline, but its good that they fixed it! Any idea of the number of attendees so far?
Martin, I don't think access to the F&SM has changed since I was there a few years ago: From the street door, a full flight of stairs up to second floor level, straight with no intermediate landings. I didn't count the steps, but that usually amounts to 15 or 20. There's a banister.
James, thanks.
Martin,
James is correct
Straight flight of stairs and a little on narrow side
Sorry no elevators ,older building
Hey guy's, I won't be able to attend the Expo, money is a little tight around here. Would it be possible for me to send someone a check for the cost of one of those cars plus shipping and have them send it to me, I really would like to have one. I would be willing to add a couple of bucks for the trouble. Thanks!

Just go to http://modelrailroadexpo.com/Register/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=31 I think you can order it direct. I know I intend to get one. :)

Thanks Jeff, I can get it through there. Now I don't have to bother anyone.

Sue and I won't be there this year, or probably even next year (unless in 2017 it's back in our neck of the woods). We're saving up for a trip to Scotland for my 70th birthday and our 20th anniversary. Have a blast!
Randy and Sue
I made all my travel arrangements and registered. 74 days early!
Very excited to see that the Spruce Coal & Timber display will be there. Also, I have been following all of Mr. Frary's beautiful work on the redone Seaport layout. I think that George guy also has a layout worth a look. ;) Great vendor list, I haven't seen a Scenic Express booth before...but, where is Mr. Fahie and our friends from Bar Mills? Just wondering if that will be a late addition.
Great job guys!
John
Cant remember if I added my name to attendees No brainer since my brother lives in a condo within walking distance to the hotel Scott H

Hi all,
I'm going to try and stop by on opening day (Thursday). I'll be the one glad handing & kissing babies. Hope to see everyone and then Friday & Saturday I'll be with George hopefully running trains and not wrecking the f&sm railroad & allowing George time to say hi to everyone who stops by. Hope everyone has a great time at the expo! By bye! & Buy kits!!! Thanx Thom...
My wife has given me the green light to venture East for the EXPO2016 as part of my 75th birthday. now I need some help from fellow forum members. I need a ride to and from the Boston airport. I am currently looking on arriving on Wednesday and returning back to Phoenix on Sunday. Before I make any plane or hotel reservations, I wonder if someone could help with my transportation. It has been years since I lived in Boston and would probably find it a struggle to rent a car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Send me a PM and your phone number and we can talk about what time I am looking at. Thank everyone in advance. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the EXPO.

See you there Frank.
Hi Frank- Looking forward to seeing you. I am planning to arrive middle of the day on Thursday and leaving to go back early Sunday.
Here are some options from internet research:
1) Try to find some of our buddies who we can carpool with depending on arrival times. Raymo or Jaime generally available to pick folks up but the cost is high.
2) A Massport express shuttle bus leaving every hour from all terminals at Logan- $11 one way to Peabody. From the Peabody station the free hotel shuttle will pick you up- about 5 a minute trip.
3) Taxi- appears to be a flat rate to Peabody area for $45-55 plus tip
4) My favorite in most towns is Uber, and they are in Boston. It is basically a limo type service and in advance you can get an account and an app where your fare is charged to your cc and no tipping. No cash involved. My kids and I have had good luck in several cities with them- clean car, driver photo id, etc. Just got a quote of $40 to our hotel and it is a fixed rate. You call them when you arrive and they will have a driver who will pick you up within minutes.
5) Rental car but you probably won't need the expense or hassle of that unless you can't hitch a ride to Sunday layout tours. I think all of the convention is in the hotel except for George's layout and there is shuttle for that.
This being said, I don't live in Boston and only have been there a few times. I hope the locals or the convention staff can help in this area as I know a lot of us fly in for this show and information or ideas on ground transportation would be helpful.

Dan,
If I thought that I could bring it, you know I would. Nothing like seeing the model in person and to see how much of the real structure was incorporated in the model. Since I have several change of planes, I have to say that it will remain on the layout. Perhaps I could take a couple of photos?
Thank you in advance for helping me with transportation. It is really appreciated. See you and many of the forum members soon.

Mike,
I used to live in Boston back when Moby Dick was a minnow. It was nor fun driving there then and I am sure that it is even more confusing. Dan Raymond has been gracious to let me know that he will pick me up. I have changed the airport arrival to Manchester. Because of the duration of flights, I don't arrive until about five. Not a good time to ask anyone to venture into Boston.
I look forward to meeting the person on the the other side of this computer. Safe travels and see you and other forum members soon.

Dan,
I would love to bring East End Market to the EXPO, but I am too nervous about even considering it. With four different flights, its a bit too risky. I will take some pictures of it and print them out on a 13 x 19" printer and bring the photos with me. Will that do? Thanks for the transportation help. Everything Mike Engler said about transportation to the Expo looks fine to this local. It's a slog getting from Logan (Boston) to North Station and the nearest commuter rail station to the Expo hotel is North Beverly, about 7 miles away. I expect die-hard rail-users would have an easier time finding a cab at Salem or Beverly, though.
I need to take a drive down the shore the weekend before the Expo, so I can tell Dave which fried clam joints are open that early in the season.
With a little advance warning, I could help out with transportation Wed. or Thu., but not Sunday, as I need to be at the Hub's Spring Training mini-convention in Waltham MA.
Beware! Beware! Beware! On Monday, I called the hotel to book a room. After giving the "special rate" code to the booker, was booked and given the "special" rate of $199 for Thursday and $219 for Friday and Saturday. Total after taxes for three nights $711. Jay-Zuz. Curious, I checked priceline and found the rate to be $478 total. Yeah, but the reserved rooms are "executive" rooms. Uh-huh. OK, checked priceline price for "executive" rooms, $539 total. Same hotel, same room, same days, a LOT different price. Buyer (booker) beware! To those who have already booked and got a lower price, peace be with you.

I agree Mike. I wonder how many paid the $219.00 after being told there were no more rooms? :'(
Tom ;D
Thanks, Tom. I got it too. The reason for the high price is that there are no rooms left in the block. Perhaps I shouldn't have dragged my behind so long... I was wondering. If the block is sold out couldn't the organizers negotiate few more rooms?
Vilius
I would highly recommend that anyone that has paid the higher rate contact Cezene at the hotel (978) 750-7974. The hotel rate was a negotiated rate. Another possibility, if you have not yet booked, is going thru Priceline or one of the other hotel discount companies and check their rates. Good Luck and see you all there.
