Hi All Barnstead lumber is next.
Karl
Hi All:
1 more pic. Lots of stuff in the box.
Karl
I'll be following along for this one. I've always liked this kit, I've been trying to figure out how to work it into my layout. Will you be modifying the paint scheme?
-Steve
I'll be following , the whole 3 days it's going to take Karl to build this ;D
Hope I can find time in the next 3 days to watch Karl finish this.
Jim
I think Karl deserves a little more credit, three hours will be plenty for him.
Karl, This kit is a favorite ! :) George released it in 1981 and completed mine in 1983... :D ... do you want me to take a few photos and post it in the completed diorama section by Monday ? ... It's 33 years old now and has held up well after 3 moves ;) ;) Never sold it like many of the others. 8)... Here's George's original ad from 1981...Can't believe Tommy finished one before you started...and Thanks for giving me a 33 year head start... :) :) :) Built the old school way, followed the instructions with no dry brushing and very mild weathering back in 1983.... did use real glass & real dirt & hand laid the track.....
Tommy
Hi Guys:
Here's the main building I scratchbuilt years ago for my main street on my layout from the F&SM RR. I made the back wall flat .
Karl
Hi Steve, Jan, Jim And AK:
Thanks for your input And compliments. It will probably take more than htree days
Hi Tommy:
Thanks for your info and input. Post your photos right here on my thread. I can use them for help in my construction of this kit.
Karl
Hi All:
I'm working on the walls. Here's a progress photo.
Karl
Looking forward to watching your progress on another FSM kit, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.

Karl
Karl,
Here's a few quick shots of the 33 year old diorama that was in storage , may loose parts , large billboard is someplace, etc....your scratch built one is way better than this build....you can see the mild weathering on the roofs, will try to fix it all up....and then post more photos of it later this year in the completed section, since I was unable to find the part box for this kit last night ;) Will watch you build bring back old memories.
Hi Tom:
Thanks for the pics. They look good. Every little bit helps. I finished the front wall. Here's a pic.
Karl
See , I said it 3 days ;)
Karl,
Its fun to see a FSM build of one of the old Kits. Will you build the kit straight from the directions or will you build again with the flat back wall. To tell you the truth I think the flat back wall theme looks very interesting. I do not think everything has to have a rail siding. What paint (colors) are you using on this build. Did not know if they are they same brand as the 1st build.
Thanks, Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
Yes I will be building it per the instructions as it is for a friends RR. Walls are Tamiya Dark Tan Spray, Green Is Floquil Coach Green Spray, Stone is Floquil Concrete (brushed), Dark A&I And dry-brushed with a light gray craft paint.
Karl
Nice start, Karl.
I'll be looking in Karl. :)
Hi vilius:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
HI Greg:
Thanks buddy.
karl
HI guys:
Here's the scratch built Barnstead's on my RR. The buildings are all scratch built. It was A town block on the F&SM. The building across the street is from an article in one of the RR mags. There are 6 scratch built buildings in the picture.
Karl
Hi All:
Have all the walls assembled. Will assemble into a structure today I hope and photos later.
Karl
Hi Karl.....nice teaser picture of your layout. Do you have a thread going about your layout and track plan?
I sure I'm not the only one interested in what your up to. ;D
Hi Greg:
The layout is long gone. I do have some other photos somewhere.

Karl
Oh shoot.....it looks like it may have been very interesting to see, given the level of detail that you put into your structure builds.
If you do run across those old photos, I'd enjoy seeing them. :)
Very nice work on the scratchbuilds, Karl. Love your style.
Hi Greg:
Maybe I can post some photos of the layout on the layout thread if I can find em.
Karl.
HI Dave K:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.

Karl
I would love to see the pictures of your layout. The F&SM block looks great in the post above.
Hi John:
I'll see if I can find them.
Karl
Hi All:
Ok lets try this again. Hopefully we are back to normal. Here's a photo with the Skoots sign on the roof. Also as requested the Skoots sign is included.

That sign will find it's way on to the S&S Railroad at some point.
Hi All:
Here's a few progress photos. Roofs are about done and I built them as removable to make lighting easier.
Karl
Hi All:
here's a few progress photos. Have to mount structure on base to finish it up. Going to Lowe's to get it this afternoon.
Karl
Karl, another one done! Almost. I love the main door treatments.
Hi Marty:
Thanks Glad you like it. It's a long way from done. It will be a 16" X 23" diorama.
Karl
Karl,
Looking great!
It is hard to believe after all of these years the Cambell shingle when done right still looks very good for that "Shake" look. (and you have done it right on)
I also like the "red" outside light. Most modeled lights are green & a pop of red along with a few other items painted red & lets not forget the red in the shoots sign make this build a little artistic. Back in the day when Malcolm & I would do articales for the magazines they always wanted a splash of red to draw the readers eyes to the photo.
I have to say & I understand you are building the kit for a freind I do like the structure as you have built it before without the big porch overhang.
Just my thoughts
Mike Sigmon
Jacksonville
HI Mike:
Thanks for the great reply. The reason I painted the light red was because all the trim is green and it would probsably have disappeared. Yeah my friend that mad the Skoots sign did his costume in red. On the real sign the sailor is wearing a yellow rain hat and coat. I made the back wall flat on my model as it was on main street and had no siding.
anyway thanks very much for your input.
Karl
Hi Karl
16x23.....thats gna be one nice diorama. I shall be following.
Mario
FW&RRry
Karl,
That will be a good sized diorama.
Jim
Hi Mario & Jim:
Yep it is pretty god sized.
Karl
Hi guys:
Barnstead's will be going on the shelf for a week or so as I have two FOS Scale kits to build.
1 Cookson's Soap Co And Grove Woodcrafters.
Then will get back to this one.
Karl
Hi All:
Back to Barnstead's tomorrow.
Karl
Hi Guys:
got A little work done today. Put the new roof sign on made for me by Frank Bernard. Hope you like it.
Karl
Great Karl , love the signs , although I miss something on the lumber sign ........ Shiplap ;) , but maybe I watch too much Fixerupper on TV.
Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. What do you mean by shiplap???
Karl

Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. What do you mean by shiplap???
Karl
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiplap You might know it as 'novelty siding' - that's what Evergreen calls their sheets you can use to model this.
dave
Like I said Karl , I watch a program called Fixerupper currently on Dutch TV , it's about the Gaines family , they fix up homes in Waco Texas and they love their shiplap.
http://www.hgtv.com/shows/fixer-upper/fixer-upper-style--shiplap-decorating-ideas-pictures (http://www.hgtv.com/shows/fixer-upper/fixer-upper-style--shiplap-decorating-ideas-pictures)
I suppose I love the program because if I had the chance fixing up homes like they do would be my dream job.
Hi Dave & Jan:
Thanks for the reply.
Karl
Shiplap!!
It has become the big deal here in Jacksonville & all of the USA thanks to Fixer Upper Most of the new houses being built to a farmhouse style all have a spash of Shiplap (1" x 6" or 1" x 8" pine or cedar) painted white or left natural. Just finished a bookcase beside our fireplace & wraped it in 1 x 8 cedar unpainted shiplap.
Try it sometime you might like it
Mike Sigmon
Karl great looking building.
Love that roof weathering beautiful work.
Jerry
It's become a running joke in our house. "SHIPLAP!"
Hi guys:
OK so shiplap is obviously a type of clapboard siding am I rights. Just never heard it before. Thanks for the info.
Karl
Hi Jerry:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like the weathering.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Was thinking about the shiplap thing. Probably came from the wood siding that was applied to 16th & 17th century ships.
Karl
Karl,
Great job on the build. Thanks for posting the sign as well.
Tom ;D

Karl
Thats what I was thinking also, sorry to have messed up your thread like that Karl.
Hi Jan:
No problem Don't worry about it.
Started working on the lumber shed. Have the 2 end walls built. the one doesn't have much weathering as it will be 90 % covered by a shed. Next is the rear wall.
Here's A few photos.
Karl
Karl -
I have some new single-edge razor blades if you need some... ;)
Kimberly
Hi Kim:
Those are new the edges are fine. I know it looks like rust but it is not. I have 15 unopened boxes of 100 each. They are from our Closed Hobby Shop warehouse.
Thanks for the offer though.
Karl
Hi All:
outside walls of the lumber shed are finished. Stained twice with A&I light stain. Lots of weathering per the instructions. Hope they look OK.
Karl
Karl, The twice staining of A/I has brought out the differant shades of wood tones. Looks very realistic & natural
Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
Yeah. I think it looks much better with the 2nd coat also. Thanks Mike.
Hi Guys:
Been working on the lumber shed. It's quite a project and isn't finished yet. Have to put all the lumber in the bays and put the roof on.
Here's some progress shots.
Karl
Hi All:
here's a few more.
Karl
Where is the "Like"button. I always enjoy your work Karl.
It's really looking good Karl.
Hi Dustin:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always.

Karl
Karl,
Outstanding workmanship! Alot of stripwood in this kit! Where is this Barnstead Lumber located on Georges layout or did he change it or not use it? Some of the old kits I have trouble finding.
Mike Sigmon

Hi Mike:
I don't know it it is on Georges layout. Ask John S. He May know.
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always. On to stacking lumber in the shed. Oh boy sounds like fun.

George used the main building in the town of Bedford Falls. I have included a picture. I took a bunch of pictures in this area and will have more on the F&SM thread when I get to this area.

Hi John:
Thanks for the photo. Much appreciated. Hope Mike /sees it.
Karl
Karl/John,
Thank you for the photo of how George used Barnstead on this layout. I know alot of you guys would recognise that structure in the photo as Barnstead but I know I would not. I do like the building as just a stand alone structure without all of the out buildings. Barnstead is a great design structure with the angle entrance.
Karl, As I have said before when you shared the photo of your earlier build of Barnstead without the back cover is the way I like the structure. Of cource if you are using the structure as a lumber yard you would need all those lumber sorting racks
Thanks again guys for sharing
Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
You are quite welcome.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here's a few progress shots of the lumber shed. It's half finished. On to half 2.
Karl
Another excellent job so far Karl.
Hi Andy:
Thanks buddy. Working on other side now.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Almost done lumber shed. Wanted to see how it would look on the diorama. He's a pre-photo with buildings just sitting in place. No glue.
Karl
The lumber shack is just awesome Karl, looks so real.
Hi Jan:
Glad you like it. Thanks much.
Karl
Karl,
Did you bother to figure how many different sizes of lumber George gave you with the kit for just to be used in the starage structure. Did you spot glue each length to keep it in their shelves?
Build is looking great
Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
Yeah you got 6 different sizes. I glued them in one at a time on the first half. Very time consuming. On the 2nd half I made nice little piles and thinned down some white glue and put it on one end of the pile with an eye dropper. I did this on a piece of waxed paper. When dry I glued them in as 1 piece.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good. I sure hope you weather that roof on the lumber shed. It is sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the condition of the rest of the structure.
Frank
Karl,
Really like how this one is coming together.
Tom ;D
Hi Frank:
That's cause it isn't weathered yet. Just waiting for paint to be nice and dry. It was the safest place to store it. Not glued down yet either.
Karl
Hi Tom:
Glad you are enjoying it. Thanks.
Karl
Looks good Karl. Sometimes it can be difficult to model new fresh wood without it sticking out and looking wrong but you nailed it. Did you do a light A&I wash to tone the stripwood down?
-Steve
Occasionally, I grab photos of models to use as "prototype" inspiration. This is one of them, I have thoughts/plans for a lumber & coal yard on the new layout.
dave
Hi Dave:
Glad I could help. Thanks. I'll take that as A compliment.
Karl
Hi Steve:
Thanks Nope it's right out of the box.
Karl
Hi All:
Lumber shed is finished. On to the Machine Shop which gets attached to the right end onf the lumber shed.
Here's photos of the lumber shed. It's finished except for 2 ladders and 2 concrete piers. These will be added when it is attached to the base. I weathered the roof for Frank.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Just for your information. I started out glued pieces of lumber into the bins one at a time. This got old and time consuming. So here's what I came up with. Wasn't sure it would work but it did. I made nice lumber pile on a pile of waxed paper. Thinned down some white glue and applied it to the pile on the back end. I worked reall great. When dry just picked them up & glued em in. They are the 4 piles on left upper deck. The four r/H spaces.
Karl
Karl,
Looks much better.
Frank
Hi Frank:
Thanks buddy.

the Lumber shed is finished. Added the machine shop this afternoon. Lumber shed is weathered as per the instructions. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Its looking fantastic, Karl!

Hi Mark:
Thanks for the reply and compliment. I put the building on the base. They are not glued in place. I want to build the last building before I do that.
Here's a photo.
Karl
As always a real crowd pleaser!!!
Your weathering is just perfect.
Jerry
Hi Jerry:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked my weathering.

Yes, your weathering is looking good. This is a nice looking model, or is it real?

Karl,
The weathering & the Skoots sign is spot on. The great or sometimes not so great is on most kits what you have done you are finished. With th FSM kits I think with all the detail & other structure you might be little more that half finished. This is a fun build to watch & learn from.
Mike Sigmon
Jacksonville
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the reply. I'm working on the last building. Haven't glued any of them down yet as I want to be able to adjust them if necessary. I'd say yeah about half way done. The Skoots sign is not in the kit. That was George's cat. But you probably know that. A friend made the sign for me. Glad you are enjoying the build. Thanks for your input. Appreciated as always.
Karl
Hi Donato:
Thanks for the reply.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Working on last building. Then on to the diorama.
Karl
karl,
Will all the walls be weathered the same shade. I like the shade of the wood on the peak wall on figure 10
Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
Yes they will all be the same color. I added some dry-brushing to this structure to change its look just a bit.
Karl
Bump - Because Karl's work should be on the top of the list. Looks great Karl.
Hi John:
Thanks appreciate your comment as always.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Been working on the wood cutting shed. Walls are assembled and weathered. Dry-brushed them with gray to give them a little different look. Directions say to glue floor boards directly on the base. I chose not to do this as I want to work on the structure on my workbench. So I applied 3M double face adhesive to both side of a piece of cardstock. Floor is assemble on one side and the walls are glued down. The peak 3/64tths X 3/64ths is glued in. I will detail the interior before I put the rest of the roof supports in. One interior detail is finished then the roof goes on. When the structure is finished I will figure out where they all need to go and glue them to the base and finish up detail and scenery. Exposed floor edges will be covered with scenery.
Here's a few workbench photos.
Karl
Hi Guys:
George's pilot model has a very weathered roof on it. So I tried to simulate it. It is pained with rail brown the dry-brushed with Rust and silver. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Hi Guys:
I thought the silver was a bit much so I toned it done with some more rust.
Karl
Nice job on the roof Karl... And agree with you that the silver was a bit overstated in your original effort. Really like the added weathering, much better IMHO ....
Looking forward to seeing your diorama come together.
--Paul
Hi Paul:
Thanks for the reply and compliment. Yeah thats what I was looking as a comment on the roof.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Interior is finished and all the roof supports are in. On to the roof.
Karl
Karl,
Rust yes & silver no however if you need silver use a little bit less
I think some of the military modelers say on a rusted roof there should be 3 different shades of rust
Dark old rust such as floquil rust/roof brown
Rust that is been there a short period of time such as red primer
New rust which is the orange such as floquil zinc that is starting in areas that had not rusted before or streaks
If any of that makes a difference. As you know we see roofs more than anything else & I guess depth of color is what we are looking for even in HO Scale
I do like how the inside of the shop came out with the lumber on the floor & saw equipment painted green
I also like the weathered posters on the outside of the walls. They help to keep the walls from looking plain Jane
Mike Sigmon
I like the more silver. It all depends on the age of the building. Corrugated roof will go from shiny to dull silver, to dull medium grey then get rust on the edges and low areas. For a sheet to fully rust it could take 40 years.
Most corrugated roofing is galvanized, only old roofs were just steel that could flash rust.
For weathering it is always about the story and history, and Karl only you know what is best.
Sweet structure! Keep it up.
Karl, As they say in football after further review I have to agree with Marty. I guess we would have to keep in mind that this is an active woodworking shop. I think the owner of the buisness would have keep the roof in fair condition to help protect the saw & other woodworking equiment. The Galvanzied roof if rust has started would not be on every sheet or panel. I also agree that the rust would be on the sides & the bottom of each panel. When looking at Galvanized roofs even the old ones some panels for reasons unknown do not rust at all. With all of that said & as Marty pointed out maybe add somemore Silver/Grey to some of the panels to add varity to the roof. I also wonder if when they patch the roof with a newer panel that piece would look alot different & maybe would be almost all silver/grey
Mike Sigmon
Hi Marty:
Thanks for the info on the roofs. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the information. This kit even has complete open holes in the roof which I am adding. Maybe I won't do that after your post. Actually I thought the same thing. If this shop is being used it wouldn't have holes in it. They would most likely be patched.
Thanks Karl
Nice job Karl.
But if I had my choice I to would have gone with the silver.
Anywho they are both well done.
Jerry
Hi Jerry:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
Great stuff here. Looking every bit like you know what you are doing. :P :P Another fantastic KS build.
Tom ;D
Great discussion on the weathering of the roof. George is modeling the depression time frame when nothing was getting fixed. It all depends on your time frame. If you are modeling the late 1940's, like I am, things like roofs were getting replaced on the businesses that were making it after the war.
This has been an interesting discussion on roof weathering. (I liked the earlier more silver color, too.)
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks for your comment. I have to make A Decision on this. Maybe I will add more Silver to it.
Thanks:
Karl
Karl, I've seen a fair number of relatively old (20-30 year old) roofs where the galvanization is still in pretty good shape. Now I'm sure the coating process in the 1950s is better than in the 1920s, but that's one reason why a roof that has more silver doesn't look out-of-place in a structure that is pretty well weathered and run down.
There's a great thread on corrugated iron siding and roofs here: http://ngrm-online.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1257-corrugated-iron-photos-please-add-yours/ (It's worth signing up for this forum, the UK/European modelers do really nice work and they have techniques that are often different from what we see here.)
dave
Hi Everyone:
Took a ride around the Lansdale Pa. Allies where I live looking for corrugated roofs.
Here's what I found. Anything from almost completely rusted to nicely painted. This should provide some nice modeling information.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's the last photo. Nice old boarded up barn type building. We have allies behind the houses all over town I will doing some more photography.
Karl
Karl, Thanks for the photo's. Love the barn with the painted red roof. One thing for sure no holes in the roofs. One completly rusted over. It all depends on what era. I still now think mostly silver galvanzied with some rust streaks & few few panels total rust to add interest. No holes & some patching. I also think unless I am wrong any patches that you do the corrugations should run with the other corrugations. This way the water will run off smooth without any turbulence. I hate to say anything (do not want to be known as the nit picker) but one of your patches is running the wrong way.
I just thought of something we found a way to slow Karl down on his builds. Karl will never do a metal roof again! & Karl will never speak to me again also.
Sorry Karl
Mike Sigmon
Hi Mike:
Thanks for your reply. Gearge's kits are probably in the 1920's ERA. So I think I will do a rusted roof. I like the old look.
Karl
Hi All:
The buildings are finished. On to the diorama. The roof is mostly rust with a little bit of silver.
Here's a photo.
Karl
Looks great Karl. I personally prefer a dark rusted metal roof. I've never been able to pull off a gray or metal colored roof in a model, I feel like it always stands out and looks wrong to me. I think it's one of those things that is very prototypical but is very tough to make convincing in a model.
Hi Steve:
Thanks for the compliment. I have to agree with you on the gray and metal roof colors. Yes they do stand out a bit. Anyway thanks for your input.
Karl
Karl, After looking at your photo of the completed workshop I think you hit it out of the park with the rusted roof. I also like the look of the little office next to the lumber storage area. Fence & landscape up next on this Diorama ?
Mike Sigmon
Jacksonville
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the compliment and reply. Yeah I like the rusted roof also.
Thanks:

Hi John:
Great photo thanks. Roof is nicely weathered with rust and holes.
Karl
Hi All:
Started working on the diorama. The lumber shed is glued down and has some small amount of ground cover around it.
Karl
Hi All:
Rear track has been added behind the lumber shed. The box casting on the left is not included with the kit. Found it already painted and it fit perfectly so I used it.
Karl
Hi All;
Here's a progress shot from the workbench. Siding track layed and groundcover installed.
Karl
Hi All:
got A little more scenery done and the main building is glued in place.
Karl
Karl,

Frank
Karl,
Beautiful job on the kit and dio.

Great job Karl
Hi Frank, Tom & Steve:
thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hi All:
got some work don on this. Fence with signs has been added. All buildings are now glued in place. did some of the castings in the yard between the buildings. Started building the wood pile.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Finished up the small yard area between the main building and the cutting shed. Hope it look ok.
karl
Coming along nicely Karl, I love the castings , like the shovels in the bins.
HI Jan:
Thanks appreciate your compliment. It took a while (A few days) to do that yard as it take a while to make those lumber piles.
Thanks Again:
Karl
Looking good as always, Karl. BTW, somebody asked you a question in another thread which I guess you didn't see, because there never was an answer. I would also like to know.........here is the link to the thread.......

Geo2rge aka timbob60
Hi Tombob:
I answered the question. It was about an additionl window for the store front.
Here's a progress photo of Barnstead's. One more side yard to finish. Will take a while as there is a lot of casting to paint. Road is painted with A match for Floquil aged concrete from Sherwin Williams.
Karl
Karl
This is really coming together nicely. All your wonderful details make everything in the scene pop. You have an excellent eye for color.
Hi John:
thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always.
Thanks Buddy:
Karl
Karl,
The Barnstead build is out standing!!! I like the way the scenery looks. Everything is natural. I believe the kit called for a dirt road however after seeing your concrete road I like it a lot better.
Thank you again for showing us a much cleaner & natural build of an old kit
Mike Sigmon
Just Beautiful Karl.....as usual...!!
Karl,
Great build and diorama. I love this stuff.
Tom ;D
Hi Mike, Donato & Tom:
Thanks for the compliments. road isn't finished yet. Added yellow middle lines today and still have to do some weathering.
Karl
Karl looks great. Another outstanding build.
Hi Jim:
Thanks appreciate it.

Karl
Great paint job on the terracotta pipes Karl , they really look real, really.
Karl,
Looking good. One thing about George's kits is they definitely don't lack castings.
Tom ;D
Looking great Karl
And that cutting mat sure looks like it has seen a build or two.
Nice! Looking good ;)
Hi Jan:
appreciate you compliment. Glad you liked the pipes. I was kind of wondering if anyone would pick them up as being terracotta.
Thanks Much:
Karl
Hi Tom:
Thanks for your compliment as always. Yeah plenty of castings and plenty time painting them.
Karl
Hi John S:
