Hi All:
Here's my next project. FOS Scale's Cookson Soap Co. Background Kit. Here's a photo of the kit.
Karl
Karl,
I'm in the gallery for this one also. Got my popcorn and Diet Pepsi, I'm ready.
Tom ;D
That looks interesting with all those corners and roof heights.
I'll be watching. I've got this one on the way from Doug (along with Dead Horse Bay).
John
I'm watching - you have to be quick around here or you will be done before the pop corn is ready.
Hi Jan, John & John S.
Yeh I kinda like all the lines this one has. I stained the walls last night. Glad you are all watching.
Karl
I am on board, M&M peanuts in hand (cause they don't melt)
Hi donato:
thanks buddy. Hope to get some work done this afternoon.
Karl.
Hi All:
Made a bit of progress today. Painted and assembled wall, windows, glass and shades Used the same scheme doug used.
1) White is Poly Scale Aged White
2) Yellow is Ameicana #DA08 Yellow Ochre Thinned down as a stain. This is craft paint.
3) Both colors are over A&I stain.
Here's the photos. Had some wall warping but bracing straightened it out.
Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Looking good Karl.
Keep the Pictures coming
Jim
Hi Jim:
Thanks I will keepem coming.
Karl
Looking good Karl. I think some of the FOS background kits are the coolest designs, I wish they released them as full kits.
-Steve
Hi Steve:
Yeah I love his background kits. I have almost all of them built up and on my display shelf up against a wall. doug has one of the best imaginations in the kit business. I never get tired of building his kits. Just finsihed Grove Woodcrafters and I'm working on Cookson's Soap.
Karl
Nice start, Karl. But what you are going to do when you run out of kits to build?
Vilius
I've got my popcorn and pulled up my chair to watch this one too. I love the background flats that Doug does and this one looks particularly interesting. :)

Hi Vilius, Bob And Doanto:
thanks guys appreciated the comments. Got some work done today. Here's a progress photo. Let me know if you think the concrete platform is to dark OK.
Thanks:
Karl
Great build Karl , and yes I do think the concrete looks painted instead of a natural concrete.
Hi Jan:
Thanks. Repainted it with Floquil Aged Concrete and it looks much better. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Karl, nice build on the background kit. I'm going to look into getting this kit for my shelf layout, the colors you came up with look great.
Jim
Hi Jim:
Thanks for the compliment. the colors are bassically the same ones that Doug used on his display model.
Karl
Karl,
Good looking build. You are fast however with flats you are double fast. Yes the concrete looks painted. Look forward to the photo showing the new concrete. I for one like your "clean" builds. Once again I wish Doug would come out with this kit in a flat or you could buy for a few dollars more a full size kit. I know I could scratch build the back however for those who like to build dioramas & not a layout it would be nice to be able to buy the "full Size" kit

Hmm, It's a tossup for me whether or not to say "I love the colours you choose" or "Wow! it looks perfect!". Pick one.
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the compliment. There's A reason for my clean builds. Another friend of mine also a kit manufacturter got all over me for building nothing but falling down buildings. He said look around town. Everything isn't falling down and ofcourse he was right. So I took his advice and build cleaner looking structures. I do minor weathering that to me looks more natural. If I want a very weathed structure I know how to accomplish that also. Maybe I will on another build. Although I have gotten used to the cleaner look. Just my thoughts. Let me know what you think OK.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi Marty:
Thanks Appreciate your comment as always.
Karl
Karl,
You are so right on. Take a look around any area unless it is "on the wrong side of the track" & most structures are only showing a little fadel colors & sometimes a little pealed paint. When I 1st got back into modeling I took a look at Karl "O" & your buildings I saw a look that was different & spot. Sure when doing seaside structures alot more weathering would be there but once again nothing falling down unless the structure is abandon. The past few FSM structures you did show buisness that have weathering but still have the look that you would want your "little people" to go inside & not feel the structure would fall down on them.
Keep up the clean weathering!!!

I second that.
Jim
Hi Mike & Jim:
Thanks for your input it was much appreciated. I'll post a photo of one of those abandoned buildings you are talking about this afternoon. It's right in town.
Karl
Hi All:
Here are photos of the abandoned building in downtown Lansdale, Pa where I live. Its the only one for quite a distance around. It is in the parking lot of our local newspaper. I found it quite interesting.
Karl
Here's the rest of the photos. Guess we can't pick on the FSM kits for some of his interiors he uses with weeds inside.
Me
Hi Guys:
Would be kinda neat in clapboard.
Karl
Would make a neat little kit either way cinder block or Clap !
Hi Ken:
knock yourself out buddy.
Karl
The only problem with those plain little clean buildings on the right side of the tracks with no weathering is that they are usually BORING !
Hi Mike:
Idon't say no weathering. All my buildings have litght weathering. I just do'nt like every building falling apart. If that's what you like I have no problem with it.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's the final photos of Cookson's Soap. Had to replace the chimney as I lost my Tichy Train Group one that came with the kit. Can't find it anywhere and I don't have any extra of the plastic kit version. Added some weathering to the roof and the platform. This is the repainted platform also. Used Floquil Aged Concrete.
Here's a few photos.
Karl
Looks great Karl , and I too believe that not every building should be weathered as if it is 50 years abandoned.
Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Looks good Karl. Are those new colors for you?!
Alan
Hi Alan:
Thanks for the compliment. The white isn't but the yellow was A new color for me.

Karl does great builds no matter how much weathering he does. He has taught me most of my modeling skills over the years, and we've become good friends through several of these forums and time we've spent together at many shows.
My comment wasn't a criticism but rather my lame attempt at humor. As usual Karl, some great modeling on this one.
Another great build Karl..... 8)
Good looking structure, Karl. Nice color scheme.
Jeff
Karl,
I still like the structure build whether it is weathered or not. (I've waiting to use that line for months.) No matter how much it is weathered it has to have some consistency relating to the age and exposure to the environment that surface has. This is why I prefer to do final weathering to surfaces when the structure is in the diorama or on the layout.
Keep on doing what you are doing .... It would be nice to see how some of them look in their final resting place.
Nicely done, Karl.
Vilius
Beautiful job Karl. You and Vilius, in particular, really do an exceptional job of painting and color selection for your builds. It's such a significant thing that can easily be overlooked. The same kit could be built just as precisely, with similar colors, but it just won't look the same. You two seem to really nail the muted, flat, finish - even for what are considered "bold colors" for structures like yellow, red, blue, etc.
Always enjoy your builds. Particularly the one on my layout ;)
John
Karl, The finish looks great. The aged concrete color is so much better. I think it was lucky you can not find the chimney. The one you put on the structure looks alot better. I think if a person had a Fine Scale Miniature tire bumper casting and added the casting to the front of the concrete loading dock it would help out. Steps/stairs from the loading dock to the ground would not be a bad idea either
Just thinking outside the box

Nice touch! How did you happen to have one?
Karl,
What everyone else has said, great stuff.
Tom ;D
Hi John:
Got it a long time ago.
Karl
Hi Tom:
thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Wow, lot of detail in that little flat!
Hi Raymo:
Glad you enjoyed it.
Karl
Karl,
After seeing what you did with the Tire Bumper & Stairs I think it helped the look of the kit alot. I bet you thought that I would not notice! the spash of red of the Phone or inforamtion box besides the doors (nice touch) Once again great build + adding the couple of small details made the build look a little more life like Keep the Red Up & the magaizes might let you do a front cover sometimes. Boy did it take me a long time to figure it out.
