Howdy. I am building a Japanese Navy Komatsu G40 bulldozer by Tamiya:

This will be a true challenge indeed. The instructions inside the box are in Japanese. It's no wonder I got the kit for a bargain at the 2016 National Narrow Gauge Convention:

Tamiya's instructions are pretty good though because they show what colors you'll need. Somewhere I've seen a resin grille someone did to American-ize this kit.
I've only ever built two plastics models before. One was a car back when I was in my late teens. The second was a biplane when I was in my mid 20's. Both models I bungled up real bad. So, I aim to redeem myself with this model.
I am following the advice of these two resources on YouTube:

I may search for that grill. But honestly, I may just build it as is. Time will tell.

Hete is a little history about the Komatsu G40 bulldozer as provided in the kit's instructions:
Quote
At the beginning of the Pacific war, the Imperial Japanese Navy captured U.S. airfields and became aware of the highly efficient machines used to construct them. Up until that point, airfields in Japan were entirely built by hand, so to speed up the process the IJN ordered Komatsu to produce a bulldozer in December 1942. Komatsu, which had already successfully produced a domestic tractor, used their G40 farm tractor as a base and equipped it with a hydraulic dozer blade to create Japan's first bulldozer. From January 1943 through to the end of the war, approximately 150 units were built and used by the IJN engineering units at northern and southern fronts. The G40 bulldozer laid the foundation for postwar construction machines which greatly contributed to the reconstruction and development of Japan.

I'd like to have a photo of the prototype to reference as I build it. Google is more eager to provide photos of built models than it is the real deal:
http://www.google.com/search?q=ijn+komatsu+g40 (http://www.google.com/search?q=ijn+komatsu+g40)
Yahoo and Bing did return at least one photo of the real deal (albeit at a museum):
http://www.sealmodel.com/images/super/TAM32565_photo.jpg (http://www.sealmodel.com/images/super/TAM32565_photo.jpg)
Duck Duck Go returned a black and white photo which may prove helpful during the build:

You can purchase this kit for a staggering $10 here:

Hmmm. I paid $20 at the show. The price tag on the box says $23.50. Oh well. It's just toy trains.

There are 2 parts sprues in the kit. The parts remind me a lot of the Tichy kits. The parts are cast crisply and with no flash. I like that.

As noted earlier by Raymo the instructions reference what paints to color the model. The paints referenced are Tamiya paints. I've not worked with Tamiya paints before. I will go to the hobby shop and procure them over the next couple of days. I intend to air brush this model. Again, a true challenge for me. I've only ever air brushed anything once (a clinic at a narrow gauge convention). You can see the "X" numbers point the areas painted by that corresponding paint color. Areas not marked by an "X" number are painted the main body color, TS-66 IJN Gray.

The type in the instructions sheet is even smaller than that on FSM kits. Fortunately there is not much writing in the instructions sheet as the isometric drawings do all the directing.
So far this is turning out to be fun.

Tamiya paints in the bottle are an acrylic with a real funny smell. Their spray cans are a lacquer paint but spray really well. Watch out when using A&I, it will soften the acrylic's.

Hey Jamie,
Do you plan on making this tractor look old or new? If youre going to put some scratch marks on this bad boy, then you should prime it first. I saw you put an AK Interactive Video in your thread so I would go with that theme and start with AK Interactive's Gray Primer Color, then come back and spray on their Rust Color and then finally paint it with a top coat - such as dark gray which is shown on your box. When you begin chipping the top coat, you'll start uncovering the 2 under layers giving you a really neat look. For my Sierrawest Cat Tractor I built for my current diorama, I used this process...I posted a pic to see if you're interested in that type of effect. After you're done seeing it, if you want me to take it down, just let me know as I dont want to take away from your build thread.
If you want further details on how you would chip the paint, please let me know...

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the tip and photo. I definitely will use them. At this point I know I don't want to leave the dozer looking brand new. Right now I'm not entirely sure how old I want it to look though.
Thanks again.

Great model Alan! Looks like a pretty simple build but an amazing opportunity for painting and weathering...that's definitely an appealing combo. I'll be watching!

I did not get a chance to go by the hobby shop for the paints. I will try to go tomorrow. Meanwhile, I cleaned off my work bench.

It's been a long while since my wok bench has been that clean. I'm planning on dirtying it up soon. I learned a trick when I was first building Jordans (http://www.kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=6690), if you model on top of a piece of white paper it shines more light on the parts you are working on.

Your off to a good start Jaime.
Gee, I learned something already and all you did was clean off your workbench and put a piece of white paper on it. :D I'll have to try that. Actually I'll have to try both cleaning off the workbench and using white paper to reflect the light. I'm hoping to pick up some more tips too. I have an Jordon Erie Steam Shovel (not for sale ;) ) that I'd like to build someday so I want to apply what I learn here to that build.
Jordans are fun.

My hobby shop doesn't have the Tamiya TS-66 IJN Kure Grey. But it has the TS-67 IJN Arsenal Grey. I'm getting that one. It's in a spray can. I mean it's just a toy train.

Made for the American market , it probably also has a " Don't use on cats " warning ;)
Out of 10 different Tamiya paints my hobby shop had 5 in stock. The sixth I substituted for something I liked and I also bought a can of primer. They carry a ton of paints at my hobby shop so I was surprised I didn't find all I needed. Oh well, it is a challenge after all.

I managed to find almost all of my tools. I did not find my best pair of tweezers. I hate that. Once you clean your work bench it's darned near impossible to find everything when you need it.

Because I have to glue all these subassemblies together, I needed to mask off where the mating parts glue together. I used regular cellophane clear adhesive tape to do that.

Jaime , what I do with military models , once I've primed them I give the whole thing a coat of paint with the same sort of color as the vehicle is going to be but a few shades darker, like if I have a tank that will be mainly tan colored I will first give it a brown coat , this helps bring out the shadows in all the nooks and crannies.
But there are a lot of roads that lead to Rome , I'm sure you will find the one that suits you best. Military modeling is fun , beware of getting hooked on it.
I was going to do an N-scale structure for the challenge but you have got me thinking about doing an Engine from Trumpetter.

I also have this beast in a box , but I'm afraid the deadline would have to be December 2017

I wanted to try to put on an undercoat of rust and opted to go with a rust colored primer spray can of Rustoleum I had. Unfortunately the can clogged as I began to spray and I ended up with this.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9206.JPG&hash=cf571ace090b54fcaf0ac87dd074c9df4cdf5bf8)
I gave up on that and proceeded to paint all of the parts with the IJN Gray from Tamiya from a spray can. Either I'm doing this all wrong or there is very little paint in those small can of Tamiya because I barely had enough to do the whole dozer! The underside of the dozer's main body did not get any IJN Gray is still only in the grey primer. Oh well, I'll fix somehow as the build moves
Later.
Jaime

I wanted to test the fit of the parts after the paint. Everything fit perfect. Below you can see the dozer all assembled by press fit alone.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_2168.jpg&hash=dc0cf9a3858609d1d994f04fbccae014b47cd243) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_2168.jpg)
I will now disassemble the dozer and begin to weather it.

Here you see how I am weathering the dozer using acrylic washes and weathering powders. I did each subassembly separately.

Looking good Jaime. It would look great sitting next to one of those kits in a yellow box. Just sayin now that you are back at the work bench ;) . Ops - wrong scale. Okay you need to scratch build one of those kits from a yellow box. Just want to keep you modeling.
Jamie, watch the advanced seris of AK interactive videos it shows how to add mud and shadowing to the model.

I've been doing that and I would like to try those techniques. I must confess I got too eager to get the dozer built so I may try that stuff later. This is the first model I've built in a very long time and I don't want to get lazy about it.

The haunted house from Clever is quite run down. I figured the dozer would be there to tear it down. That's part of the challenge, make it work. Paper and plastic together as one, I thought it sounded challenging enough.
I'm glad Dan came up with the challenge idea. It's definitely got me back at my work bench.

Great little build. It would make a great addition to an On2 layout or diorama. Thanks for letting me bounce the idea off of you in Maine.
So I printed the Clever Haunted House (http://modelersforum.com/general-daily-discussion/treat-for-halloween/msg17221/#new) in greyscale so I could mock up the scene I'm thinking about making. Here you see a rough mock up of the freebie haunted house (http://modelersforum.com/general-daily-discussion/treat-for-halloween/msg17221/#new).

I know I have some Gatorfoam in my supply closet so I need to get started making some landforms and cutting some card stock for the haunted house. This is indeed turning out to be a challenge. I found my ream of card stock only to find out my printer is out of color ink!!! I guess I'm going to be making that trip to the office supply store after all. You all know it is cheaper to buy a band new printer than it is to buy ink replacement cartridges. Furthermore, my printer uses a separate cartridge for yellow, magenta and cyan. I really need to find that million dollars now..

Thank you. Weathering is tricky for me. I have tendency to put it on too thick.

The freebie from Clever Models (http://clevermodels.squarespace.com)comes with no instructions. That's ok, aft all this is a challenge.
I've worked on models from Clever before so somewhere along the way I found some generic instructions. I'll follow those as best as I remember given I cannot find the file at the moment.
First thing is to well, cut the parts from the card stock. Use a fresh blade in your hobby knife and a metal straight edge. Once the parts are cut you want to color the edge with a cool grey PrismaColor marker. Don't cheap out here. The Prismacolor markers are fantastic and they hide the glaring white edge on the paper parts once cut.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9245.jpg&hash=1939308f2751e637df96fa6f6030b6096a4deae7) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9245.jpg)
Here is a closeup of an edge colored with the grey Prismacolor only half way across.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_FullSizeRender_02.jpg&hash=e78f4056fd8aedab69711b5529f78fc636e5672c) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_FullSizeRender_02.jpg)
I decided to add bracing to the corners and the edges of the cool freebie haunted house's stone foundation.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9247.jpg&hash=0197d6b08d175e0ab95351889915217dc48f0301) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9247.jpg)

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9248.jpg&hash=0dd3c0cf19fb56b95d1627256aeb9da028723805) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9248.jpg)
You'll notice I made the corner bracing a tad proud of the foundation. I did that on purpose for when I plant the cool freebie haunted house in my diorama I want it to look like it isn't floating on the ground. I will build up the ground around the foundation.
I'll try to point out some notable events as I continue but this is pretty much the same (cut, hide edge, glue together, brace) going forward on this cool freebie haunted house from Clever Models (http://clevermodels.squarespace.com).
Later.

p/s Yes! I am -that- cheap and recycled my badly printed sheet of card stock and printed on the reverse side once I procured the excessively overpriced ink cartridges.

Thanks for all your feedback, gang. I like these builds. It's almost like we're all at the clubhouse building stuff together.
I decided to give the windows a try. The kit comes with individual windows that can be applied to the model thus giving the structure some relief and dimension. First off one needs to cut out the printed window hole and replace it with an individual window. It is almost like making your own windows.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9251.JPG&hash=2331666e83c7d15ee6eb08296402d294c229fa02) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9251.JPG)
Here you see the cut out individual window.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9253.JPG&hash=9d2628b7c3bf190c2f94aed9d565a2519134eb23) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9253.JPG)
I scored the back of the window along the fold lines to make it easier to fold the paper. I used a pointy tool to score the paper part.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9252.JPG&hash=27268cc1beed323fa646d0bd411ed1c395ede8b1) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9252.JPG)
And this is an idea of how the individual window fits in the window hole.

I then cut out the individual window panes so one can see into the structure.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9256.JPG&hash=b3486debb931a33b5ddf1880c7a4ce0b61d9e106) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9256.JPG)
I glued in the window.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9257.JPG&hash=69b5c001124845e495b183c2c177eb07289203f7) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9257.JPG)
I will fix the broken mullion later. All I have to do is print me another window and cut out what I need out of it.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmyyehudaexperience.com%2Fimages%2FBuilds%2FKomatsuG40%2FKomatsuG40_IMG_9258.JPG&hash=137f8097c383029beedc735200f87633d13174bb) (http://myyehudaexperience.com/images/Builds/KomatsuG40/KomatsuG40_IMG_9258.JPG)

I cannot decide if I want to cut out the voids where there are missing boards. I'd need to glue in some studs in behind the dangling boards and such. I'm thinking that would be a lot of fun...
By the way, my wife Lisa said the structure is too green. I told her it is not finished yet.

I noticed in the B&W photo of the original dozer it had the name Komatu on it as does the model's radiator shell.
So where does the "Komatsu" come from?

Komatsu was founded in May of 1921. It was formed by the Komatsu Iron Works to make tools and mining equipment for its parent Takeuchi Mining which was founded in 1894. I suspect Komatsu is someone's name.
I think it's neat the raised name is quite prominent on the front of the dozer.
Jaime
We have a few pieces of Komatsu equipment here at work. They're referred to as Come-apart-soon.

My model resembles that remark ...
Jaime
But the name in the photo and on the shell is spelled Komatu with no 's'.
That was the point of my question.

Oh. Maybe that's why mine was on sale.
Someone fell asleep at the die machine or they couldn't procure the rights to use the name.
I'll add a mud blotch there and no one will know the difference.

When is the challenge deadline again? I may be falling behind. Got to catch up.
Jaime
Deadline! What deadline? ??? :o

Don't worry about it. When this challenge ends we will start another for all of the unfinished builds from this one ;)

That's a relief...
I already have my next challenge build project lined up.

I ordered these two items (spray lacquer and weathering set) from Amazon right when I began the build. I wanted to be able to use them to weather the dozer. They arrived today. Oh well, its the thought that counts...

Class 1A Jaime.....very, VERY nice.
Nice job on the bulldozer, Jaime.
Jeff
I also like the look of your weathering on the 'dozer. Any progress on the diorama that you're putting it on?
Jaime:
Beautiful model. Tamaya makes great kits. Wow and 1/48th scale to. Weathering just beautiful.
Karl
Hey Jamie,
The tractor looks really neat. I like the color you chose for the hydraulic hoses. Does this mean you're now going to be an O Scale guy?
Thanks for sharing!
Alan
So I just got back from the first Crafstman Courtyard held at the Timonium show this past weekend (October 26 and 27 of 2019). I got several comments from several folks at the show about "when are you going to finish xyz build thread?".
Alright already !!!
I did not finish this challenge but I did take first place in Rolling Stock or Vehicles at The Craftsman Courtyard model contest with my cool little O Scale dozer. OK, so mine was the only entry in that category but hey, you cannot win if you do not enter. So I can now say the dozer I built for this challenge is a contest winning entry.
Ha !!!!! Haters are going to hate...... ;D
Pictured below is the plaque to prove I did indeed win.
Thanks for stirring up the pot Raymo.
Jaime
Jamie
From what I heard from others that where there, you could have won if a dozen others had entered. Looks great, congratulations.

Thank you.
It was fun hanging out with other modelers and walking around and seeing lots of cool model train stuff. I saw lots of great craftsman kits (new and old). It's amazing what these koi makers are doing with the laser engravers and the 3D printers.

Working in 1.48 O scale changes everything and how its viewed easily. Its right there in front of you, nothing hiding !
Now consider G or 1/2" scale, something I have not tried yet, but there is some really interesting locos and stuff in the narrow gauge 15---18 track spacing. have a friend who is doing some 1/2" mining, its really WOOOOOOOOOOOW..
