Looking good so far Jamie.  I'll second that recommendation on the sprue cutter.  I have one that looks just like yours and find it invaluable at times.   :D
I'd say I have about 3 hours worth of work in it so far. No doubt a dedicated modeler could build this critter in one evening.

Because I have to glue all these subassemblies together, I needed to mask off where the mating parts glue together. I used regular cellophane clear adhesive tape to do that.

Those sprue cutters are awesome.  I have 2 of them in my tool drawer and use them all the time.

Jaime , what I do with military models , once I've primed them I give the whole thing a coat of paint with the same sort of color as the vehicle is going to be but a few shades darker, like if I have a tank that will be mainly tan colored I will first give it a brown coat , this helps bring out the shadows in all the nooks and crannies.

But there are a lot of roads that lead to Rome , I'm sure you will find the one that suits you best. Military modeling is fun , beware of getting hooked on it.

I was going to do an N-scale structure for the challenge but you have got me thinking about doing an Engine from Trumpetter.
I love photo's, don't we all.

That's one beefy locomotive there, Jan. It'd make a cool build.

I also have this beast in a box , but I'm afraid the deadline would have to be December 2017

You could build the tender only ;-)

Here you can see how I used cellophane tape to mask the areas where parts mate

I wanted to try to put on an undercoat of rust and opted to go with a rust colored primer spray can of Rustoleum I had. Unfortunately the can clogged as I began to spray and I ended up with this.

I gave up on that and proceeded to paint all of the parts with the IJN Gray from Tamiya from a spray can. Either I'm doing this all wrong or there is very little paint in those small can of Tamiya because I barely had enough to do the whole dozer! The underside of the dozer's main body did not get any IJN Gray is still only in the grey primer. Oh well, I'll fix somehow as the build moves

I wanted to test the fit of the parts after the paint. Everything fit perfect. Below you can see the dozer all assembled by press fit alone.

Here you can see how I ran out of the super expensive Tamiya paint and had to leave the underside in primer color.

I will now disassemble the dozer and begin to weather it.

And great to see you back at the modeling bench !!  I'll be following along and looking forward to see how you weather this little beauty.

Here you see how I am weathering the dozer using acrylic washes and weathering powders. I did each subassembly separately.

It really helps to take photos in order to gauge the progress along the way.

And here is what I ended up with after gluing the subassemblies together.

I now need to dream up a setting for the dozer. After all, it'd be a shame not to put this critter to work.

Looking good Jaime. It would look great sitting next to one of those kits in a yellow box. Just sayin now that you are back at the work bench ;) . Ops - wrong scale.  Okay you need to scratch build one of those kits from a yellow box. Just want to keep you modeling.

I plan to build a diorama using this freebie from Clever:
