So for the challenge I have decided to do the German World War 2 Loco, my second WW2 and train related model .
The box , always a great illustration on it. The color of the engine on the cover will be the color I will be making the model.

The instructions use only a few words but the drawings are very clear, with all parts numbered. There is also a color scheme with numbers and names for the colors from several different manufacturers. The color scheme however is the one used after WWII, when the engine was used in civil service. I will be painting it in the color scheme used in the war.

On with the build , although I am waiting for the paint to arrive it's no problem , military modellers tend to assemble several sub assemblies before painting , sometimes the whole model is put together before painting. I will do the sub assemblies and then paint. First I cut all parts for the assembly off the sprue with my sprue cutter , stainless steel German made quality tool. Then I sand off any flash or leftovers from the sprue. Then dry fit the pieces and then glue them on.

Thank you all for following along , as always feel free to make comments.
Great looking kit. I've not seen them for sale here in the USA. I like that you even get a length of track with the kit.
Jaime
I built this one sometime ago....and it's a lovely kit.
Looking very good so far ;)
Jan,
Great work. I'm just drooling over this....and with all the other builds going on, I'm just drowning in drool..!!!
Be sure...I'm following.
Thanks Jaime , Pollux , Donato.

Plenty of room to put a motor in , but you'd have to make trucks and gears for it.
Assembled the axles and fixed them in between the frame pieces. Till now everything fits perfect , but that's what I expect from Trumpeter.

Looking good Jan. Detail is extremely nice. The parts look very crisply molded. Was there much flash on them?

Thanks Mark , flash none at all , the only spots that need sanding are the sprue connections , and even those are very small.
Jan this build is mouthwatering..

Thank you , google mouthwatering , sure to make you hungry ;)
Jan,
Looks great! Your build is very clean. What glue do you use? I and plastic are incompatible but it all may be just the glue that I am using.
Vilius
I use Revell Contacta Professional Glue for Plastics

The key is to use as little as possible , this is made easy by the thin metal disperser. To keep the metal disperser flowing always have a lighter at hand , just heat a bit and it will flow again.

I really can't get enough of this build!!

Hi Jan:
Cool looking loco. Looks like the box say 1/35th scale. Trumpeter makes a pretty nice quality kit from what I've seen of their stuff. I will be following along. The red wheels make the model stand out nicely.

Karl
Glad to have you along Karl , hate to disappoint you but the red wheels are for the civil version after the war , I will be painting it German Green , the wartime color and the wheels are mat black on that one.
Jan
Paint looks good so far ill be watching.
Jim
Thanks Jim. Got some more done today , looks like I'll need one of those etched metal bender things though, ordered one , needed it for some other projects too.
Jan....
This is amazing. I can't believe the detail that is in there................
OK........ I lose ! ! ! !
I know when I'm beat ! ! !
see ya
Bob
Thank you Bob , it's 1:35 scale so there should be a lot of detail , I hope I can paint and weather it accordingly later on.
Painting and weathering is what military modeling is all about, I'm not very experienced yet , this is my 3rd military kit, my first one was a Russian KV2 that I was quite happy with.

Jan, that's a great looking tank!
Military painting and weathering is a whole 'nuther ballgame (or golf game ;D ) I'm fascinated by it, but wouldn't have the first clue how or where to start.
-Joe
Thanks Joe , I watched a lot of video's before I started on that tank. Luckily mistakes are easy to cover up.
Very interesting build Jan. Both the loco and the tank! Thanks for sharing! :D
Thanks Bob. Here's what I have done the last 2 days, don't know if I will get anything done the next 3 days , Mike knows why. ;)

Jan,
The photo etched parts will really make the difference in the look of your loco.
I DVR'd the Ryder Cup and will watch the highlights later this evening when I know nothing else is on.
Tom ;D
You are doing a very clean and tidy work!! Excellent!
Is a big model, so the secret for a nice final look, will be on the paintwork. Colour modulations, sun blanched, grime stains......don't be afraid to improve new techniques!
Thanks Tom and Pollux . I'm going to be painting it when I have the time to do it right , my airbrush is waiting in anticipation ;)
Looks great so Far Jan.
Stay cool and run steam...... 8) 8)
Looks good Jan. Very cool kit.
Thanks Bob and Steve
After the Ryder Cup , on we go.
The photo etched stairs bended and glued with CA, the difference between the bending tool or not the bending tool is the bottom step on the left stairs compared to the others.

Thank you Andy , I'm really enjoying this build.

Yes, I know. Wish you could have been here. Memento coming your way. This is a great thread- I'm very intrigued by using air brushes in the house with acrylic thinners. I've watched a few of the AK Interactive videos- do you have some other recommendations? Like others have said, I'm blown away with the detail level of 1:35 scale. Each piece is a model unto itself.
Smooth work ;)
Hi Jan:
Looking good so far. I'm still following along.
Karl
Thanks Mike , Pollux , Karl , much appreciated.
Mike I'm not sure what you mean with acrylic thinners? The paint I will be using is Vallejo Model Air, as to health , this is one of the FAQ's
- 5.12. Model Air is manufactured especially for airbrushing. Do I need to wear a mask when I use the product? Model Air contains no harmful pigments, but wearing a mask when airbrushing is always a good idea. Anything foreign in the air we breathe, be it dust or pollen, is best not inhaled, and pigment particles, even if not toxic, are still foreign matter.
Jan,
Really enjoying the thread, great build.
Tom ;D
Thanks Tom

I have been using the Vallejo paints for about a year now and I'm real happy with them. I still spray in my paint booth - because it's there but I don't think you will have any problems with pigment particles.
That is going to be a very nice looking loco when you get in finish.
Thanks Rodney , John if I had a paint booth I would use it , not sure if I'll get a booth now that I am switching to all Vallejo Air for airbrushing . The occasional spray can painting I do in a separate room , I wear a mask and then retreat from that room.

You have a good plan - I wouldn't build a paint booth for the Vallejo paints - I use mine for rattle can painting of my caspia
for my pine trees and for some colors of primer that I still use rattle cans for. I can see a day coming when the rattle can painting will be nonexistent. I wonder if you can sell floquil paints on eBay? ;) I have a pretty big stash that I haven't ouched in a few years.

The inside of the cab , it will hardly be visible from the outside but I decided to paint the wood planked doors and floor and later on the instruments on the dashboard.

Jan,
Fantastic job on the details. The door interior look great. I often do little details like that even though you mostly can't see them. It makes me feel better about the build just knowing I've above and beyond the normal build.
Again, fantastic job.
Tom ;D
Jan,
This is a great build to watch! All of the extra detail you're doing really stands out.
Jan
The build is coming along nicely, the floor and interior look awesome.
Thanks Tom , Mark , Jim. Doing the details inside is a good way to practice for the outside, and like you said , knowing it's there makes it worth it.
Trumpeter kits are really fun to build , everything fits perfect , instructions are good and you can hardly mess it up.

Thanks Rod and Bob.
Wow , 2 weeks since I've worked on this , today I did a little bit.
Next step , white primer airbrushed onto the places where the paint will have faded from sun and weather. If I do the color spraying as should then this will give lighter , faded patches on the final paint job.
