I decided to do another Challenge Build just to have something to work on during the Hurricane, so I looked thru some of my unbuilt kits and found this one. So here we go again.
The first pictures are the parts and instructions. The instructions are on line and have to be downloaded and printed.
I added bracing to the walls, almost following the plan, change some because some of the walls are very weak. I don't like to try and cut 1/8 bracing with a razor blade, so I use this saw blade. This is from Micro Mark and comes in a set of 3 blades and a handle. It is like a No. 11 blade with the teeth on the back side. I have used these for a long time and really like them.
I painted the walls with Floquil G.W. Cream and the doors, windows and trim with Floquil Socony Red.
As I was starting to install the doors and windows, I remembered a build quite some time ago by Candy.
It was a Truck Service Building and she didn't like the way the Mens and Women Restrooms were located. She moved the Mens room to the back and put up a small fence .by the door.
I added another door around the corner and that will be the Mens. The ;ladies will stay in the front. Now I need to find some signs for Men and Women.
Thanks to Candy for this idea. Now off to search for some signs.
Looking good. :) Have fun with the build.
Stay cool and run steam....... 8) 8)
I remember building this kit for Jimmy when it first came out. My only complaint was I thought the garage roof was too small, I think he made it larger after that. Here's a pic of my build.
Jeff
Looking good! I like the color combination you chose.
Nice Jim. I don't know what you've been eating for breakfast, but you've sure been prolific lately ;D . Looks great!

Jeff, I remember your build of this kit.
The roof isn't any bigger but it slopes from front to back in this kit

Butty John,
Thanks for checking this build. I guess I have some time and hate to do nothing.
Jim
All of the signs are now applied to the walls, I even found some "MEM" and "WOMEN" signs for the restroom doors. I have not been able to find a sign that shows the Mens Room around the corner.
The Billboard is assembled and needs some walkway boards yet. I have attached 2 chains to the hanging sign and am working on the post to hold the sign. Need to build it, paint it and attach the hanging sign.
All of the Castings have been primed and painted, even the Vent on the 20 ft. long pipe ?
Stay tuned for the wall assembly.
Nice build. The gas pumps that come with the kit are those Jimmy's own castings or can the be ordered from another vendor.
Mike Sigmon
Mike, Thanks for looking in on this build
The Castings were all in a bag with a card from BEST (Bollinger Edgerly Scale Trains) I found it on their web site and the part no. is 4-0147
Jim
The post for the sign is complete and the sign is attached. I drilled two small holes in the cross bar and pushed the chains in an touched them with a little super glue.
I decided to put shingles on the peaked roof but I did not want to use shake style shingles, so I ordered some 3-tab shingles from Rusty Stump and they arrived on Saturday and now I have a shingled roof that is a little more modern the shake shingles. Rusty Stumps Shingles are self stick, but I already had 3 M adhesive on the roof board, so I cut the Rusty Stumps shingles into short strips which made them easier to handle but took a whole lot longer to finish the roof.
I do not like working with metal to make a roof, but I tried it for the shop roof. I cut the corrugated roofing material into an 8 foot wide piece. I sprayed it with a gray primer and when that dried I used Floquil Rust, Mud, Grime, Dust and some Poly scale Red Dirt. When I thought it looked bad enough, I cut it into 4 foot wide pieces and put it on the roof board with 3 M adhesive.
Next will be the assembly of the walls. I think that may be tomorrow.

Noting really un-orthodox here, I put two walls for each building in the four corners of my assembly tray and when the glue dried, I put the buildings together. I did not assemble them like shown in the instructions. I have some ideas for the final look with added details and some other neat stuff.
Continued tomorrow
Nice, clean and tidy work.
Personally I love the general colour ;)
Sweet! Well done so far...
Jim- I also think it a great job so far. The walls will be nice and square!
QUOTE "I even found some "MEM" and "WOMEN" signs for the restroom doors."
I don't even want to know what Mems are.

Thanks Mike,
The Magnetic tray does make it easer to get square corners.
"MEM" is caused by fat fingers on the keyboard.
Jim
OK, the buildings are finished, The sign and Billboard are up and now to start on the final touches. I put a Concrete floor in the Repair Shop and added the privacy fence around the Men's Room Door. I put a couple of castings just inside the door of the shop. I have a set of J L Innovative Design Gas Station Detail Castings that I had painted previously. I have some cars and a pick up truck and a whole box of figures to use for the final look. I am not going to put in trees and other scenery until I figure out where to put this on my layout.
I think I will cut a piece of ChipBoard just to see the final placement of all the details. I have a lot of things to do the rest of this week and next, so this may take a while.
Continued soon

Tom,
Glad you liked it. I have had a lot of fun with this build.

Now it is time for you to use your imagination. Just close your eyes and image a warm sandy beach......OH wait, that's the wrong dream. OK, Just image that there are trees, bushes, green grass, and dirt driveways. Think about all the scenery that could be in these pictures and in the background.
Norms is a busy place and there is a lot of activity going on, what with engine troubles on his pick up, tire problems on the sedan and the ladies needing to have their car checked before their trip. Hope all this gets taken care of quickly. Some of the ideas that I used came from Jeff (zephyrus52246) which I got from the picture of his build of this kit
I don't have a place on my layout for these buildings right at the moment, but I have an unfinished spot in mind for later. There are a lot more detail castings in the J L Innovative set and I think I will use more of them on this Gas Station. This is just a suggestion for what could be things to come. This was a fun build and I hope you all enjoyed following along.
One last picture to show the overall layout. This will be close to what I will do when I finally get it put on the layout.
Thanks to all of you for following along with this Build.
