Hi All:
I will be starting shortly. Lynn B And I will be building this guy together as we did with the pile driver. I think Reading Bob said we was gonna start his shortly so maybe he will join in with us. I will be interesting to see our different takes on things.
Karl
Hi Karl,
Yep. I'll be joining the fray as well. I'll be starting this one in a week or two. Like you said, it'll be fun to see the different take on things. :D
Excellent...a three-fer! One of my favorite FSMs, but sadly not one in my stash or I'd pile on!😜
Hi Dave & Bob:
Thanks for following along. Glad to have you aboard also Bob. Walls are primed both sides with earth per the instructions. The Shingle templates are also applied. The instruction say use white glue. I used 3 M double faced adhesive. Much much easier. Probably took less than half the time. I have to catch up with Lynn.
here's a photo.
Karl
Oh Boy, a triple treat of builds. FSM builds too!
Tom
I have 3m tape , I should have used it, would have saved the warping. Karl you're so Smart ;D
Umm Karl, you were suppose to leave the shingling templates with the openings still on the templates. :o
Bob's going to love watching us struggle and learn from our ways. ;D
This is going to be fun! I will be following along.
I hear 'Dueling 'Banjos'!
Loving this abundance of Bailey's builds...it's one of my favorite FSM kits!
John
Hi Tom, Lynn, John S., Dave K. And Cuse:
Hey Guys thanks for checking in. Yeah this should be fun.
Karl
Hi All:
The 3 M Adhesive double sided tape has bee applied to the shingled areas. On to the shingling.
Karl
Looks good Karl, I often have a hard time using the 3m tape with the Campbells shingles so keep to white glue.
Hey Lynn:
Okay thanks for the input.
karl
Hi All:
Working on shingling the walls pics soon I hope.
Karl
Thanks for the update Karl, I still have a couple more shifts to work myself and have a hard time finding time, I tore all my shingles off and am starting over. :-[
Hi Lynn:
Sorry to hear you had to tear your shingles off. What happened?
Karl
Hi A;;
Just finished shingling the walls. Used double faced tape instead of whit glue. made the job much easier and way less time consuming. Here's a photo.
Karl
Hi All:
I will be changing the colors on my build. George Sellios and I discussed it. I suggested earth shingles and green windows and doors with depot buff stucco and he liked the idea.

Great job. I like the new color combo as well.

Karl
I like that idea, do you mind if I steal it?
Karl your shingles look great using the 3m tape as an adhesive, can you tell me how do you manage to keep the shingles inline?
Hi Lynn:
OK here's how I do it. I cut a strip of shingles off long enough. Then I place the strip between the the thumb & fore finger of my right hand. I place the thumb & fore finger of the other hand on the strip and pull lightly while also pulling downward straightening the strip of shingles. This will take the curve out of the shingle strip. I then place the strip on the guide line pulling and pressing down as I go. When that's done I use a pop sickle stick to burnish the row down where it hits the double faced tape. This works rather well for me. Hope you dcan figure it out.
Karl
Thanks Karl, will give it a shot tomorrow.
Lynn:
I'm left handed so will probably reverse your hands.

Oh oh , my wife says all the left handed people are Smarter, she of course is left handed. ;D
Hey:
Who am I to argue with her.
Karl
Hi All:
Working on the upper half of the walls.
Karl
Hi All:
Still working on the main walls hope to have them finished today. Then assemble them.
Karl
Looking forward to your progress. :)
Hi All:
Lynn:
As you can see I did away with notching the walls for the bracing.
OK the top haves of the walls are shingled, windows and large freight doors are installed. Next I will assemble and stucco the walls and add the rest of the windows and doors.
Karl
Looks great Karl the wall colors look terrific and go nice with the green, I'm about to install the windows today. I take it you didn't care for the idea of notching the walls. You just have to be aware of the flex on the two ends now because of the pretty much lack of horizontal brace. :)
Hi Lynn:
I added extra bracing. Don't think I'll have a problem.
Walls are assembled. two walls have been stuccoed. They are painted with Depot Buff, Light A&I and dry-brushed with light gray. Then dry-brushed lightly with Depot Buff. Hope they look OK. I straightened the crooked tire casting.
Karl
Hi All:
I'm not happy with the stucco color. I'm changing it to aged concrete per the instructions. Will take photos when finished.
Karl
I did mine with aged concrete, I found the aged concrete too dark so tinted it , railroad tie brown heavily tinted on the shingles, it is a nice combination. I think your stucco maybe is fighting with the colors with the curtains.
Hey Lynn:
You may be right on the curtain comment. What did you tint the aged concrete with.
Karl
Karl I used the floquil aged concrete and the floquil reefer white for tint, I also use methyl hydrate to assist in the flow/thinning.
Hi Lynn:
What is Methyl Hydrate and where do you get it.
Karl
Sorry Karl was misthinking, it's http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/lacquer-paint-thinner-0497112p.html#srp it's paint thinner. Replaced my floquil thinner with it, good for track cleaning as well.
Hi Lynn:
Thanks OK I have lacquer thinner.
Thanks
Karl
Hi All:
Didn't get much feedback on the the Depot Buff stucco. I change it to the same color Lynn is using. Also per the instructions to Aged Concrete. Hope this looks better.
Karl
Looks good Karl..... 8)
Hi Greg:
Thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
The aged concrete is a nice color.
Hi PRR:
Thanks appreciate your input.
Karl
I agree the aged concrete looks good with the other colors. I look forward to your progress.
Karl
Looking great. I think the color change was a good move.
Hi Lynn & John:
Thanks guys you are both correct. Also talked with George about it and he likes the aged concrete better also.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi guys:
Got A little ,ore work done on the building. Front wall window extension and signs have been added. Looks like I need some touch up on the stucco near the shingles.
Karl
Very nice Karl. Did you name it or is that the kit name? Just curious because that was James Stewart's name in It's a Wonderful Life.
Karl, looks fantastic, the colors look really good together.
Did you follow the kit instructions for the black pitch?
Work is getting in the way for me. :'(
Hi Curt:
That is the sign that comes with the kit. I will have to ask George it was named after George Bailey in the movie. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Lynn:
No I use Apple Barrel #21490 Pavement. It dries nice and flat and is very easy to use.
Karl
Hi All:
Decided to do my roof in all corrugated. Need some advice. Want to know what you guys think. I painted it the same color green as the rolled roofing and want to know if you guys think it looks OK before I glue it in place. Or I could make a new roof with rolled roofing to match the res. Need you advice.
Karl
Karl,
I like the corrugated roof. I think the pitch is too steep for rolled roofing.
Jim

Karl personally I don't like it but then again I purchased this kit because of the presentation George applied to it. I will be honest in the fact that I have often wondered if they had colored metal roof back in the 30's which is when I model. I really feel that the green roffing makes it look too modern but again you didn't say what you were striving for in the era look and the overall finished condition of the building. Again I must point out I have often been drawn toward Georges kits for many reasons but mostly the way he presents them, if I were an engineer I would certainly frown at some of the designs , ie a thousand gallon water tank on top of a building. ;D
Hi Jim and Lynn:
Thanks for the comments I will take them under consideration.
Karl
I don't dislike the roof , but I am with Lynn that it looks a tad modern.
Hi Jan :
I agree with you and Lynn. It's getting changed.
Karl
Karl did you use the 3m tape for attaching the metal roofing?
Hi Lynn:
Yes I did.
Karl
Hi All:
Well I've mad some progress. As you guys know I tried a couple of different roofs. I ran out of Metal corrugated so I decided to use A Paper Creek Got the small roof and the dormer added. Hope It looks OK.
Karl
Looks fantastic Karl. I will be moving at a snails pace for a bit, broke my finger. :-[
Hey Lynn:
Thanks for the compliment. Thant's not good. How did you break the finger?
Karl
Looks great Karl. Lynn, sorry to hear about your finger.
John
Hi Cuse:
Thanks for the compliment. I wasn't my finger it was Lynn's finger that got broken.
Karl
If asked, I'd say.....darn good progress Karl. 8)
Karl,
Perfection, just pure perfection.
Tom ;D

Helping my son in his garage. :-[
Hey Lynn:
Heal quickly so you can get back to modeling.
Karl
Hi Greg & Tom
thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Looks great Karl.
Looking great, Karl!
The oxide red roof looks much better. The green colour didn't quite work with the rest of the structure. Below is a link to a NZ painting company with information on colours. As you can see green was in use as early as 1870 on corrugated iron roofs. I model the early 1930's and limit my corrugated roofs to green, red and silver/ grey. In Canterbury people used to paint their veranda roof sheets alternatively red and black - Canterbury colours.

Hi Lynn:
Thanks buddy appreciate it. Here's a photo. I put the back wall shed on and added roof suppoert wires.
Karl
Hi All:
Haven't gotten much done as I caught a terrible cold and am not feeling very well. Hopefully will get back to work tomorrow if feeling better.
karl

Wow, I love the old look of the roof. Great job on Bailey's build.
Tom ;D
The backend looks great, get better soon. :)

Karl
Hi Guys:
Finished up the porch on the right side of the building. This finished up the main building. On to the platform and Office building and scenery on the diorama.
Karl
Karl
Your build is looking great - it always amazes me how fast you can build an FSM structure without cutting any corners and affecting the quality. Once again, great work my friend.

Good to hear from you. Thanks for the compliment. You gonna build this one too? Hope so.
Karl
Hi All:
Got a little more work done. Most of the streets are in and weathered as is the railroad crossing. Also finished scenery between the building and the streets. Streets are Aged Concrete, A&I Stain and dry-brushed with Antique White.
Karl
Sure looks great, how did you do the streets?
Hey LYNN:
Streets are 1/16th task board. Painted Floquil aged concrete, A&I and dry-brayed antique white.
Karl
Thanks Karl, thought maybe they were plaster base and painted. Looks great.
Hi Lynn:
thanks buddy appreciate the compliment.
karl
Hi All:

Karl,
The kit and diorama look great so far. Keep up the terrific work.
Frank
Karl
I really love reading your build threads and I've read them all. The modeling is outstanding. But the biggest inspiration I get is your choice of color. I find it very helpful when you show the colors you use
Dick
Hi Frank:
Thanks buddy appreciate the compliment. Talk to ya soon.
Karl
Hi Dick:
Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you enjoy my builds and the colors I use. I'm glad you find it helpful. Thanks.

Hi Greg:
thank for the compliment. Been working on the platform. Here's a photo.
PS: Fixed the crooked chimney.
Karl
Hi All:
Working on the shed roof. Campbell shingles and I added cap shingle instead of paper strip.
Karl
Hi Guys:
The platform is finished and installed on the diorama.
Karl
another great build by Karl.
Jim
Karl, how do you finish the Campbell shingles?
dave
Hi Jim:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl.
Hi Dave:
It's pretty simple. Apply shingle to roof as they come with the kit. Then lift shingles here and there. Hit them with light A&I stain. Let dry and go over the lifted shingle again. Then dry-brush with light gray. I used Apple Barrel #20526 Country Gray. Hope That helped.
Karl
Excellent Karl.
Hi Curt:
