I decided to take on a small build while waiting on other layout related items to dry. I started this build this past Monday afternoon.
I pulled Gusano Loco Mexican Restaurant from the unbuilt kit stash. "Gusano Loco" in Spanish means Crazy Worm. Doug was being very kind when he used the word "worm" for Gusano. I've heard gusano used on the street by gang members and trust be when I say it certainly doesn't mean "worm". Although "Worm" is one of the generic meanings.

This should be a quick build. I'm not adding lights as this one will be used in an area where most all others will be lit. If any lighting is done, it will most likely be done on the build board of under the front door.
More in a few.

Continued in a few.
I removed the walls from the carriers and sanded the edges to remove the "kerf", laser angle cuts.
Bracing was done next.
After the bracing was thoroughly dry, I applied Hunterline's Light Gray to the exterior side of the walls.
More in a few.
While waiting for the A&I to dry, I glued the two trim pieces to the front wall.
I then measured and drew a pencil line horizontally on the wall to indicate where the front roof section will fit against the wall. Also, this wall will get a treatment of stucco above the pencil line.
Diet Pepsi time, back in a few.
Hi Tom:
Looks like you are off to a good start.
Karl
I then measured and drew more lines to indicate where the small front door and roof will fit.
In Doug's instructions he stated he used water putty for the stucco effect. He further stated that if you add to much, the water putty can be sanded to remove the excess.
Well, I'm using Durham's Rock Hard Watty Putty and when dry, it is the hardest material to sand, period. So, I added two very light coats of the water putty.
There is a reason it is called Rock Hard. Ever try to sand a rock?
The wall was taped with painter's tape to keep the putty off the lower portion of the front wall and below the pencil lines.

Hi Tom:
Looks like you are off to a good start.
Karl
Karl,
This is a fun build and I appreciate you stopping by.
Tom ;D
I'm following this build, Tom, with great interest. I have another kit to start soon with a stucco wall portion, so am very interested to see how the Durham's water putty works out, as I have a can in my workshop.
--George
Here is how it looks after two light coats of water putty was applied to the wall.
I set this wall section to the side and painted the other walls.
To give me a faded look to the paint, I used a thinned mix of Floquil Hunter Green and thinner, more like a stain rather than paint. I thought I had photos of the wall color but apparently I forgot to take them. Dang!
Anyway, you'll get to see the wall color in a few more photos.
More in a few.

George,
Happy to have you along. This is the first time I've ever used Durham's on a kit wall. I've made roads with it in the past.
Later in the build, I'm sure you will be very please with how this turned out.The key is to apply it in thin layers and not try to do it all at one time.Tom ;D
After the walls were painted and dry, I added the large sign.
I marked on the back the area of the sign. I used an Emory board to sand the back side of the sign.
More in a few.
I cut the sign to fit the side wall. White glue was painted on the rear of the sign and then it was carefully placed on the wall.
You can also see the wall color in the next photo.
While still wet, I used me thumb to press the sign into the clapboards.
After a few hours, I used the same Floquil Hunter Green to add weathering to the signage. I used the paint full strength and dry brushed the paint onto the sign.
I'll cover the stucco painting and weathering tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks to all following along on this, yet another, adventure in building.
Tom,
I'll be following along to see what I can learn this time. Nice job with the dry brushing to blend the sign into the wall.
Great work Tom. The way you were progressing I thought you were going to complete it in one day.
Crazy build.

Following along as well. :) Neat little structure and great overview of the build process. :D

This is a neat little structure and a fun build as well. This isn't as nearly detailed as my normal builds. I just used this one for a workbench time filler.
Thanks for joining the adventure.

Good to have you follow along on this one.

Once the water putty dried I applied the first coat of red paint. I used Polly Scale DTI Cherry Red.
Don't be fooled by the brightness of the red. It will get toned down later in the thread.
I mentioned I applied two very light coats of water putty to the wall section. Well, the same was true with the paint. I basically dry brushed the wall in two separate coats.
This was done as the two coats of water putty were applied in two very thin coats and I didn't want to fill the void with paint.
The red paint almost hides the stucco.
More in a few.
Once the red was dry I applied some dry brushing to bring out the stucco effect.
I used Polly Scale Aged White for this. I took my time and applied 3-4 coats to get the desired effect.
As you can see the aged white also toned down the bright red.
More in a few, Diet Pepsi time.
The windows and doors were painted with Floquil Reefer White. When dry they were dipped into Hunterline Light Grey A&I and set aside to dry.
When dry, I added window glass using Canopy glue. Floquil Reefer Yellow was used to give the windows some shades.
The windows and rear door were installed and the four walls were glued together.

More in a few.
While the four walls were drying I assembled the front bay window sub assembly per the instructions.
I set this assembly aside for later use.
Continued in a few.
I glued some scale 8 X 8's to the underside of the roof.
I then used an Elmer's glue stick and applied glue to the top side of the roof. The roof section was then pressed on some 180 grit sandpaper.
I like using Elmer's glue sticks for paper to paper as it gives you time to make adjustments. When dry, it is as good a using white glue.
The sand paper was cut around the edges for a nice roof top.
I then took this roof section outside and sprayed it with Ace Hardware rattle can Premium Primer Gray.
You'll see the roof later in the thread.
More in a few.
I then painted the two metal stacks with Model Master Jet Exhaust. When the paint was still tacky, I dipped them into some Hunterline Creosote Black A&I.
When the black A&I and jet exhaust were dry, I dipped them into Hunterline Rust and held them with clothes pins until dry.
Taking a break, back in about 45 minutes.
Time to make some signs. With every kit I build, I always make two copies of the original signs. I work off the copies and save the original in a folder for reference if needed later.
The signs shown below are copies of the original.

I used the Elmer's glue stick and applied glue to the back of the three signs.
I then pressed them onto a thin piece of cardboard.

More in a few.
I used a new/sharp #11 blade and small metal ruler to cut out the signs. I very carefully cut the sombrero out free hand.

More in a few.
I used full strength Floquil Grimy Black to paint the edges and back of the signs.
When dry, the sombrero and Gusano Loco signs were glued to an 6 X 6 sign post.
A light coat of Hunterline Light Gray A&I was painted on the two signs, not yet weathered.
More in a few.
I next glued the roof in place. When dry I used Gallery Glass Liquid Leading for the tar around the roof and wall sides. The exhaust pipes were then added and glued in place.
I used Pan Pastels to weather the roof.
I then added the two front sloped roof sections to the front. I used rolled roofing paper for the two roof panels. The liquid leading was used for the tar here as well. You will be able to see this in the final photos.
More in a few.
I used 2 X 8's to make the sign face. 4 x 4's were used for the posts and 2 x 4's for the braces.
Prior to adding the posts and braces, I used the Mexican Food and Gusano Loco signs for the front. The two signs were glued to the front and left to dry. A weight was added to keep the sign from warping while drying.
When dry, I used a #11 blade to cut horizontally between the 2 x 8's. I then used the backside of an Emory board to weather/stress the sign.

I painted the front sidewalk with Floquil Aged Concrete and when dry, weathered it with light gray A&I.
I added the fire hydrant, dog and couple.
You can get a better view of the green color and stucco in the following photos.

I started this build on Monday afternoon and finished it yesterday afternoon. I think I spent less than 20 hours of actual building. Most of the time was waiting for paint or glue to dry.
I normally take 150+ photos for an average build but only took 46 for this one.
Also, I didn't go into a highly detailed explanation of what I did. As mentioned in the beginning, this was going to be a quick build.
Thanks for following.
Time to dig out another build.

Man, you went thru that lickety-split. Nice thread. Love the result.
I'm not sure I understand the stucco/water putty process. Could you say a bit more? Are you "painting" on a couple of thin coats? Stippling? What is the mix and how are you applying it (and avoiding unnatural tool or brush patterns)?
Cheers.
Great build, Tom. I especially like the sign weathering.

Cheers.
Vince,
I did post a disclaimer that the build was going to be a quickie.
I've had others ask about the stucco as well. In a few days I'll do a thread with more photos on my process for adding stucco to walls.

Hi Tom,
You are a busy man. I also like your sinage and especially the billboard.
Steve,
Thank you and yes, I've been busy. At my age I can't let to much grass grow under my feet before it grows over my feet. 8)

Thanks Tom , nice little build and love the stucco.
Jan,
Thank you for the support. As I mentioned to Vince, I plan on doing a short thread on how I did the stucco. Stay tuned.

Good grief.....I just saw this thread yesterday and now it's complete.....are you building at "Greg Speed"?.....well done. 8)
Greg,
Oh no, I hope that speed thing isn't catching. 8) But then again, it may help move things along in Tahope.
Thank you as well for the compliment.

Amen. Couldn't have said it better myself. About the only thing it doesn't go with is brussels sprouts. Nothing goes well with those....
Great build Tom! I've never used Durham's water putty before, but it sure did a nice job as stucco. Thanks again for all of the pics of the build. Always helpful.

The structure itself came out looking great, walls weathering ect, I must say you have the signage end of the build looking absolutely perfect.
Wow.....I take a couple days off and Tom knocks out another one - great looking build.

Uncle Tommie,
First of all, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and the babe. I was wondering if you had a chance to get this structure installed on the layout yet?

Cousin Brucie,
A very Merry Christmas to you as well my good friend. Hope your New Year will be a much better one.
I do have a spot for it but don't have the area prepared. I'll show it on the build thread in the next month
