Jan, if I remember my science lessons, Fahrenheit (yes, the scale is named for him) picked 100 degrees as the temperature of the human body (he was off a little) and zero was as cold as he could get with a mix of water, ice, and salt. Celsius did his work many years later and had better instruments.

Found this diagram , and google told me only 5 countries in the world use Fahrenheit, and Fahrenheit and Celsius lived for a great deal in the same era, Celsius was younger and died a lot younger.
