Maybe a odd structure question...

Guys,

Though they have been on hold, I have 2 largish dioramas I am working on.

One is a early 1900's street, based mostly around Jeff's CCK Newport series kits, with a few from other mfrs.

The other is a mid 1950's scene, a street/neighborhood, reminiscent of where I grew up outside of Boston. Kits so far for it are from Bar Mills, KC's Workshop, and FOS.

So, to my question...

One kit for the 50's dio is the Metzger Building, from FOS. Has anyone built this, and can tell me, can one side of the structure be made without the store/business fronts? To me, the kit is too narrow to represent a city block, with streets on both sides. So I'd rather use it as a corner for one intersection, and have 1 or 2 more structures at the other end.

I don't have the kit in hand, yet, to look at it and see if I can change it around a bit.

Thanks.

JImF...here's a little initial progress of my Wilmington/Newport shelf diorama....

I have the kit, Jim. Unfortunately more pressing projects keep pushing it to the back of the build line. Sounds like you're thinking of turning it endwise so that the long storefront becomes the side? I don't see why you couldn't replace the long storefront with some loading doors opening onto an alley, but you lose the beautiful busy-ness of the row of shops that are such an eye-catcher and lured me into buying the kit in the first place. I might suggest keeping it as is and, instead of the right end of the building being a street corner, just create a narrow gangway between Metzget and thr next neighboring building.

Just my thoughts. PM or email me if you want dimensions or anything else from the kit. And let's see  pix of the ones you've already built. 'Cause we love pictures! 😜

Jeff, wow, that's coming along super nice!

Have to apologize, was going to order a couple more of your kits, but when I saw the Metzler kit from FOS at such and high price, on ebay, and then saw it was still available, I bought it, instead. I did not want to wait, and find it sold out, later. But I have been selling off some other model items, that I now realize I will never pursue too far, so hopefully will be ordering again, soon.

Dave,

My explanation wasn't clear, my error. I DO want to use the kit as is, with the long face the main street side. But I don't want both end sides to have business', if I can help it. One idea I had was to take the Automat face and use it on a separate building, perhaps a small single or 2 story one.

As for pictures, I have said in the past, I am TERRIBLE at remembering to take them. Yes, my phone has a decent camera, but half the time, I've left it on my dresser in the bedroom, or in my truck. I'm terrible about carrying it with me all the time, as well :)

But I have resolved that, besides trying to get more modeling down, to try and take pics as well. We'll see how that goes, once I get back into things full bore.

Gotcha. Sounds like a great project. Keep us posted. I don't think it would be hard to cut the automat and fill it with a blank, especially since it'll nest up against the next building and likely won't be seen.  By the way, they wouldn't give me the secret Forum handshake until I started posting pix. 😜
