Thanks Sam!

I hit my first speed bump when building this kit yesterday. After constructing the 3 Wood Walls and weathering the Stone Wall to the Main Building, I glued down the floor template to the Diorama Base I constructed out of Foam and Gatorboard. When I placed the 4 walls onto the template, I realized that the Main Stone Wall was shorter than the guides. (In the first picture I attached, you can see how the stone wall doesn't extend the length of the wall guides) This caused the two side walls to stick out above the Front Stone Wall. I then placed a ruler across the 2 peaks, opened up the compass app on my iPhone and turned my iPhone on its side activating the level. This app showed the building was 1 degree lower at the front of the building. I contacted Brett at Sierrawest...who gives awesome customer service...got back to me the same day. When I explained the situation to him, he believes the Resin Casting probably "shrank" seeing its about 15 years old. To correct this issue, I placed a piece of strip wood under the stone casting..raising it up and bringing the majority of the building back into alignment.

In the second picture, you will see I added a 2 1/2 inch drop off to the left side of the diorama. The plan is to add some stone/brick walls and a culvert to add some additional interest. The castings were ordered from CC Crow.

That's all for now...

Next step is building the addition on to the back of the Machine Shop. I'm currently in the process of weathering the boards and adding knot holes. As shown before, I drill a hole with a pin vice and then insert a tooth pick. After the glue dries, I clip off both ends with a flat edged nail clipper..aka a Toe Nail Clipper. I then use chalk and or a black wash to draw out the knot holes.

Thanks Dude...you almost done with the Mine?

The finish on the wood looks great.  Why are the boards in the center of the floor set perpendicular to the rest?  Does heavy equipment sit on this section?

Thanks Gregory and Jeff for the comments. Good observation Jeff on the heavy equipmemt comment. Thats actually the part of the floor where the track enters the building.

Nice build thus far. I'm looking forward to more updates.

I do,wonder about replacing the out-of-production paints with equal substitutes. I'm sure it's not a huge deal but it does make one wonder.

Tru-Color line is expanding, and there's a good chance you'll get a reasonably close match for Floquil colors with one of theirs.  I wish the Tru-Color people would produce an accurate paint chip chart, though.  Printing PDF (on an un-calibrated printer) is no substitute.  (I was discussing this today with one of the dealers at the Greenberg show in Chantilly.)

The Tru-Color Erie Gray-Green TCP-164 is, to my eyes, a Very Close match to holy Driftwood Floquil stain.

Dave...

Why don't you buy one each of everything they make and build us all a color chart

They are great paints and will.. In my opinion, become the next generation floquil.

I see floquil as a 21st century version is studebaker in 1965 and systematicly trying to put themselves out of business.

See ya
