Well the instructions tell you to glue the edge on like I have done, then wet the board and wrap it around the frame. Sorry it don't work. the part that is glued on just pops off. So I decided to wet down half the wrap and get half of it glued down before continuing.

seems to be working so far.

What kind of glue did you use to attach the edge?  I'd expect yellow carpenters' glue to resist wetting, but maybe not on whatever kind of plywood/laserboard they use for the tanks.

Titebond wood glue. The kind I always use.

I've used that and 'cheapo' yellow carpenter glue, thinned to the consistency of cream.  Now I'm using NESL's Flamingo Glue, which doesn't have quite as much initial tack, but dries a bit quicker and is clear when it dries.  But glue preferences are an instance of "opinion" - everyone has one, dot-dot-dot....

I think it was more the fault of the area I was gluing to than the glue itself. I was expecting a 1/32 strip of glue to hold. Oh well my other method worked just fine.

The four green colored disks at the bottom of the picture are cut acrylic, painted a speckled green. They sit in the top of the finished tank and if you leave the hatches open it looks like pickles in brine. The tanks are all glued up and washed with some A/I. now starting the self stick bands that I prepainted black.

Andy on my tanks I say to wet the outside only. It will expand and form a curve by itself. Then wrap around the frame untill it drys then glue to the frame. For that I us CA for a fast bond. Works great even on the small N scale water tanks.

Thanks for the tip Rich.

I'm enjoying your build Andy.  Thanks for sharing.  We need all the rolling stock, vehicle, ship, etc. build threads we can get.  I love building structures but every now and then it's nice to do something a little bit different.   :D

I will have to agree with you on that Bob. That is the main reason I build my layout like I do, a small scene at a time. I can do all it takes to make the scene over and over and not all at once.

Now that the tanks are done the next step is to build the 5 cradles the tanks are nested in. There are three different kinds, one for the middle, two for inbetween, and two for the ends. Here I have them all built, now to get some paint on them.

The cribbing has been painted and the tanks are getting glued in place.

Great thread - I'm wondering what technique you used to get the bands on straight?  The self stick part is fine but how do you get them where you want them?

John, I took a compass and held it in a small vice, then set the height and turned the tank to get a line on it. Then I just followed the line around with the banding.

A 'poor man's surface gauge'   http://what-when-how.com/metrology/universal-surface-gauge-metrology/

An idea that occurred to me, but I haven't tried, is to construct a sheaf that's the same diameter as the tank (using heavy paper).  Then you can use that to align a band by pushing the sheaf to where the band should be, aligning the band to the sheaf, then removing the sheaf as you glue the band in place.

That it is Dave, I have two surface gages but haven't adapted them to hold a pencil.

I have all my tanks in a row and added the roof supports.

then the roof and hatches.
