SWSM The Addison - Build Challenge 2016

In the spirit of being challenged, I will be modeling my first boat/ship kit, Sierra West Scale Models - the Addison.  There are a number of very cool and diverse models being built as part of this challenge.  I saw a couple of waterfront structures being started so I thought no time like the present to break out a model of a boat and have a go at it in support of those structures.


Below is the kit and also a photo of the kits contents which includes a resin cast hull, a package of various metals and resin castings, A bag of stripwood, thread and the walls / roof for the cabin.  Also included are Brett's fine instructions, reference photos and a number of templates.  Hopefully I can do this justice ...


Finally, between work, family and aging parents responsibility it is a good thing that we have until 1 February to get this done as I do not have much time for modeling lately but good to be back at the bench.  Jaime and I were talking about our recent lack of modeling time last weekend at the NNGC in Augusta, and if he can find some time to build that really cool bulldozer, I can try to berth a new fishing vessel ...

     Well in between some chores this afternoon, I was able to get a little bit accomplished on the build with some prep work to get started.  The first recommended step is to blacken the metal details, like eyelets, cleats, wire and life preservers. After minor clean up, I gave them a bath in JAX Pewter Black for about a minute (this stuff works pretty fast).  After pulling them out of the Pewter Black, I transferred them to a paper towel and then set them aside to dry.  The remaining resin details include wood barrels, 55 gallon drums and crates which I will tackle later.
Next, I spray painted a laser cut sheet of white plastic blocks with Krylon Camouflage Brown, and set this aside to dry.  Brett suggests using Floquil Roof Brown but I substituted something close.
I then focused on the main hull.  Brett's castings are some of the very best with little to no flash, but I spent some time cleaning up the casting with a dental pick and an X-acto knife.  There is a tremendous amount of detail in the hull casting and appeared that there were some tiny elements of the mold for the casting in some of the deeper crevices.  After clean-up, I mounted the hull onto a small block with some Scotch Mounting Squares.  Mounting the casting will make it much easier to handle go forward.
Once that was done, I went ahead and painted the hull with Ceramcoat Eggshell White by brush making sure to put on a light coat but getting coverage into the details.  Note that Brett recommends using Floquil Reefer White but again I went with what I had on hand.  Brett notes that note all the brush strokes will be able to be eliminated but these should get blended and covered as we weather the hull.  Once finished, I set this aside to dry as well.
So looks to be a busy week but I hope to have more updates for you all next Sunday evening.

Well this will be lots of fun to watch! Haven't seen a build thread on one of my boats in at least five years.

The Addison is named after well known modeler Jon Addison. He's crazy! He loaned me two boats he scratch built so I could dismantle them and make molds of the two water-line hulls. They were just so awesome and Jon nailed the look of the "backwoods" in a boat! The other boat the "Jewel" along with the Addison were released with Foss' Landing back in December 2000. I have seen many built up versions of the boats over the years but this will only be the third or fourth build thread.

This is a different type of build.  I will be following it.  I have SWSM Shelby's Marine to build. There is a resin trawler to build in that kit.  So I will be following your techniques.
