Since the Railroad Line Forum is closing tomorrow I'll be here for the foreseeable future. That being said I moved this thread from "Layout Tour" to here since they were nice enough to provide this new sub-forum. So anything that has to do with my layout will be posted here, i.e. track work, scratch builds, scenery, etc.  Hope you follow along.

Now to play catchup:

This build was for a Winter Challenge for the other forum. The idea was to build a rural, simple, and very basic sawmill in a 4x12 inch space.

The Mill consists of a storage shed scratch built using 6x6's for the frame, 1x10's grained and colored with Rembrandt chalks, a refurbished boiler, a vertical steam engine, single blade husk saw scratched with SW pulleys added, a scratch built carriage with SW details, and a carriage platform which was also scratch built. The other detail items are also from Sierra West. Lastly the belts are made from Tyvek and painted a belt color.

All in all this was a fun and interesting build proving just how much can be squeezed into such a small space.

Thanks Curt. Looks like we'll all be posting here for the foreseeable future. I have my doubts weather or not the other forum will come back.

Hi Larry,

Great job on packing quite a lot in a small space to make a complete scene.

I'll be posting here for awhile to, I hope the Railroad line forum comes back (and I also have my doubts and I doubt it will be the same), but if it doesn't, we have a new home here.  Now that I have started posting here, I probably continue to post here.

I too moved my build thread here, as it seemed to be a more appropriate place to be.

So far I've shown what I've already completed on my new layout. With that in mind here's what I'm thinking for my next scratch build which I'll share from start to finish:

Since this a a rural short line railroad I wanted to build a Farm Tractor Sales and Repair Shop; I remember some farms in the area of Pratt's Hollow growing up.  I had contemplated buying the Truck Repair Shop from Sierra West, and use that as a starting point, but I just couldn't justify spending over $300.00 for the kit. So I'm going to do the next best thing; scratch build my own.

Here's what I hope to accomplish with this build:
-Use a different type of base since the plexiglass, even though it won't warp, is too hard to work with.
-Scratch build the structure along with benches, cabinets, shelves, etc.
-Use SW details as much as possible; have already received an order.
-Make a removable roof which will be a first for me.
-Install lighting of some description; probably similar to what I did on one of my dioramas.
-Lastly with everything that's going on in RL this will probably take most of the winter.

So enough talk let's get to it then:

Here's the blueprint. The building will measure 30 ft. long by 14 ft. wide and 10 ft. high with a regular pitched roof. The garage entrance will be 9.5 ft. x 8 ft. and a scratch door going into the building. The dotted line to the left is where an interior wall will reside with a doorway into a storage area which also has a window. The top drawing are the ends which will have the rafters already in place; using the same blueprint will hopefully make all the interior rafters exactly the same. I'll figure out the supporting framing as I go.

This is the inside of the front wall; the other side will be visible on the layout. I decided to try something new and added "tarpaper" under the siding so that will be seen inside the Shop. The paper is from Hobby Lobby treated with some white chalk brushed in with a wide soft brush to show wear . This was then glued to the framing in one piece. After drying the doorways and window were cut out using a new blade in my knife. The framing is made from 6x6's grained, colored with Rembrandt tan chalk then received a coat of A&I.

All the walls have been built the same way as the front wall was. The tarpaper was weathered with white chalks to show some age but not look worn out. The windows were added with each opening be specific to that particular window. I do have another part to add to each window to have it appear as open; but that'll come later. Looking at the last photo, the second post from the left corner is where an inside wall will be added once the building gets glued together with a doorway added. I did notice this morning that the front and back walls have to go inside of the end walls; luckily they're just tapped together at this point.

I did order five new colors of Rembrandt chalks, ranging from darker browns to grey, to give me better variety for my builds; one of which is a red that's midway between barn red and burgundy. I think I may use this as the color for the Tractor Shop to give some visual variety to the layout. Next I'll be starting on the exterior siding and as always thanks for stopping by.
