Quote from: elwoodblues on July 18, 2026, 09:51:05 AMTom, glad to see you back at the workbench.  The skylights are looking great and I see you found another practical solution to the problem.

Ron,

I had to blow the dust off the bench to get back to this build.   ;D  Thanks for the compliment.

I did find a solution but not the one I'm going with. Greg, kind of beat me to the punch.

Well, there were a lot of comments left about the skylights. However, those of you that know me and have followed my builds, know I just can't leave something done that isn't correct or look as it should.

Greg, in his post on page 38 mentioned shortening the long sides of the skylight.

I actually did that very thing yesterday morning to fix the ill fitting skylights.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the skylight frame is to wide for the glass frame to fit properly.

I measured the width of the skylight and found that it was exactly 6 HO scale feet to wide. That is the width of the gabled ends of the skylight. That equates to 1/16" in a ruler measurement.

I used a #17 Xacto blade and cut down between the end as shown below.

Since I'm shortened the width, it wasn't necessary to keep the 2X2 glued to the gable angles.

I then cut off the remaining 2X2s from all the skylights.

I then removed one end of the gables from the other three. The old glue was sanded from all the gables.

I measured, thrice, and cut 1/16' off each of the eight side rails.

The four end gables were glued in place and set aside to dry. When dry, I touched up the sanded area with the silver paint.

The glass frame is on the skylight but not centered. I kept sliding around. I'll glue it in place once the glass is added.

I forgot to mention that I also shortened the acetate glass panels as well.

This is much better and now looks correct. I did tack them in place to keep them from sliding off.

Done for today.

I must know you well, Tom.

I read you're earlier entry over breakfast and thought "I won't comment yet.  Tom will have to fix this first".  Nice fix as always.  Great to see this thread moving along and you making hay while the sun shines.  I'm looking forward to see the sign lit up, as well.

Cheers, Mark.

Rick

Tom, I knew you wouldn't leave them the way they were.
Great fix and they do look better.

Tom,

All that extra effort was well worth it as the skylights look fantastic.

Hi Tom, your sidewall adjusted skylights now look the way they should.
I must have done the same thing with mine, I just can't remember that.
By the way, I do indeed play the lottery weekly.
However my numbers still haven't paid off. :(
