Seeking Kit... / Re: Seeking FSM kits

Craig,

Checked on that Roadside Delights kit this AM. Box is pretty beat, so if you are wanting it for collecting, not worth it. Has a consignment sticker on it listing it for $225., but owner was there (he works there), said he would take $200.

He stated that kit was complete. As it was taped closed, I didn't ask him to open it. If you do decide you want it, I will have him open it, and will check that castings are there, as well as instructions, templates, etc..

Craig, the hobby shop near me has, or had a Roadside Delights kit on consignment, for $220. or $225. Box is no pristine, but just looks like normal wear and tear from being stored, if I recall. I was told the kit is complete.

I can check it out Tuesday, if you want, they are not open Sundays and Mondays. Let me know.

Seeking Kit... / Re: FAQ Dioramas book

Craig, if he is just looking to buy it for less than the $130.00 retail price, Scale Hobbyist sells it for &96.00 when he has it in stock.

https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Modeling_Books/dioramas-faq-english/AKI00008000/product.php?s=5&t=0&pg=1&ppp=48&sb=stocknumber&so=a&man=AKI

It's OOS at moment, but backordered. If your friend signs in (no charge) and selects Add To Watchlist and Notify Me, the owner will contact him, and I think he gives anyone on Notify list 1st shot at purchase.

I used hi for all my plastic model WW1 aircraft buys, as well as some misc items, over the last few years. Great service, fast shipping. No affiliation other than satisfied customer.

Thanks for the replies.

I should have mentioned I needed a 50's era look, and I was wanting to avoid Yellow Cab, but I'll go with it, and use a couple I had previously found.

Thanks again.

I'm in need of the above for a structure.

Anyone have anything to spare, or can suggest available decals (or a kit to rob them from)?

Thanks.

Thank you, guys, much appreciated.

John B, this was their 'big' kit for 2016. If I recall, cost was either $350. or $365., with $15.00 shipping. I splurged for it mainly because I had sold off some motorcyle parts, so had the extra fund, and since it gave me 6 structures (though a couple are small) plus extra detailing parts, I figured it was worth it.

Not sure they sold that many, don't see it come up on ebay very often, and I have never found any mention of anyone building it, either. My build will be slow, as it shares time with a couple other projects.

Upper section painted, and attached to lower section.

I did go back and straighten out the tiny keystone pieces :)

Thanks George. I agree, I like having the multiple layers. Just this one, had to be very careful with lining up each one.

A bit more done. 1st photo is the blank front wall and all the detail items, still in carrier sheets.

2nd picture is the wall with details attached. That's not the actual color, just due to the lighting.

Carl,

After admittedly losing interest earlier with this thread (the light tower techy part), I have just caught up.

WOW! Simply fantastic, both the structure and your engineering of it all.

Great info, thank you.

No, no family in the photo.

My wife was born and grew up in Chauncey. There was a good size coal mine there, her dad was a miner there when he was young, later the head maintenance man, till the mine closed in early 50's.

He was born in 1913. By then, the Sunday Creek coal company had been taken over by the New York Coal company. The store in the picture became a privately owned store, as the NY company built a new, brick one, further south along the main street, closer to the village center. The building is gone, I don't know it's fate. Father in law did open a hardware store, on the next block south of where the new company store was. That company store building is still standing, but her dad's, and a uncle's, and gone.

The rail line through town was the New York Central, after taking over the original company. It runs basically north south, and still active under NS. The Hocking Valley Rwy ran Athens to Toledo, and was the primary coal hauler for the area. Just below Chauncey, it ran parallel to the NYC till just outside Athens, where there was a interchange yard.

The store front painted and assembled.

There are seven layers, counting 2 acetate pieces. Eight, I guess, if you count the sign strip. :)

To all,

Thanks so much, lots of good info, and did make me realize I was over thinking it too much.

I'll sketch it out 1st, to get a idea of proportion, then draw it out on card, cut that out for a mock up, to get a better idea.

To make it a bit easier, I'll keep wall lengths to even feet, space the windows accordingly.

Not sure what I'll do about the store front, since it's hard to tell if it is straight across or has a inset doorway. I like the idea of the inset style, maybe the one that was done by Grandt Line would work. I'll start searching out the one.

Thanks again, all.

My wife, bless her heart, asked if I would build the structure shown in the picture. I want to do it in wood.

I've never scratchbuilt a structure before. I can guess at the dimensions, but really stumped at how to begin. Anyone know of a book or other source of info, to help me get started?

I have "Scratchbuilding For Model Railroaders" by Bob Walker. Huge amount of excellent info, but no where is there a section of the "lets get started" sort (The station model on the cover is almost a dead ringer for the other structure she asked if I could build).

I looked at build threads on here, there were a couple that may have shown steps, but the pictures are no longer available, and most of the rest just show finished projects.

Any hints, tips or 'how to' info anyone can share?

Thanks.

Bob, great looking interiors, and thanks for showing how simple and easy it can be.

I'm working my way through GIMP, as I just can't see buying Photoshop, or any of the other pricey software, just for hobby use.

James, the WS Just Plug hub will let you dim down individual lights nicely.

I'm also going to check out the Dwarvin system more, as well https://www.dwarvin.com/

The instructions call for the side and back wall to be assembled as a unit, and I propped them up to check fit prior to doing so. And found the 1st issue.

Notice where the side bracing roof supports are, relative to the top of the rear wall. 1/8" difference.

I did go back and recheck the instructions, but I had placed them correctly, just did not pick up on this when I was doing the bracing.

I was able to carefully get the horizontal pieces off, and cut the vertical ones shorter. I then assembled the walls.

Later, with basic structure about done, I kicked myself. What I should have done was attach the rear wall higher, to match the bracing, and build a loading dock for the freight doors to fill the gap at the bottom. Live and learn. :)
